We have an iMac G5 running 10.4.11 which developed some nasty colour banding down the screen and have now plugged in an external display. How can you turn off the iMac display so it only outputs through the external monitor?

I'm interested in the new iMac but could not work with a glossy display. Can anyone share their experiences of using the iMac with an external display? In one respect it seems like a waste to have two monitors but the base model costs little more than the maxed out Mini and seems like the better option.
I would be interested in seeing photos of any setups featuring the iMac and an external display.
Also, is there a way to turn off the iMac display when using an external display?
I upgraded the ram to 4gb crucial on my 24" intel imac (early 2008). Now it freezes at apple screen, but only if my external WD My Book hard drive is plugged in via firewire. If I unplug it from the firewire port.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am wondering if there is a way to make an external display automatically work as the main display when plugged into my MacBook Pro. I just picked up the stuff needed to be able to connect to an external display and it has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 which has a higher resolution than my MacBook Pro built in display does and I'm wondering if there is a way to just basically have the external display work as the main display when connected to the MacBook. I know you can mirror which is what I'm doing now, but the problem with this is like I said it won't let me use it at its max resolution as it is different than the MBP's resolution and doesn't look as good because of it. I am wanting to basically set it up where it will be a desktop type when I'm at home and when I'm out, it will be a portable. I don't need a dual screen setup but would love to have it work that way if possible. So far the only way I can get it to work at the max resolution of the external screen is to have a dual monitor setup where the MBP is the main and the external screen is the 2nd screen and I really don't like that setup because of the way that the screen and the MBP sit by each other.Â

I have a 14'' iBook and recently bought an LG 19'' Widescreen monitor. I am testing a Dell 17'' on it right now before I open the LG one, but my problem is that the same screen shows on my ibook and the external. This isn't what I want. I have read you are supposed to be able to close the laptop and then it shifts to the external display but this is not working for me.
This is my goal:
Use my bluetooth keyboard full time
Have my ibook closed at all times
Have my external as my main display
How do I make this work?
I noticed that after upgrading to Lion quicktime player won't play movies full screen on my second display. Under Snow Leopard if the quicktime window was on the second display and you hit full screen it would fill the display is was on. Now the video slides to the main display and then goes full screen. There doesn't seem to be any way to change that behavior. There are no preferences. Â
The only work around is to move the menu bar in the display preferences to the second menu, so that the second monitor becomes the main one.Â

I have this gorgeous 22" ACD that I have plugged into my G5, where I use it quite often. But my intention for the G5 was to be a server, which it is. I often need some extra display space when I'm doing school work, or coding, so I was wondering if there is a way that I can use the display, while plugged in to the G5, as an external display for my MBP. Preferably something that I could stream over my local network.

I'm going to be getting an external monitor soon with a native resolution of 1920x1200 - the highest that the MB's Intel GMA X3100 will support. I know that I can open System Preferences > Display and then click the little menubar and drag it to the other monitor to make it the primary. Here is the thing: I want to just use my 24" monitor and not use the MB's screen with it (I have an external keyboard and mouse).
Should I...
1. Use the two displays as an extended desktop and then (leave the MacBook lid open) just turn the brightness on the MB all the way off so the screen is black (no back light)?
or...
2. Just close the MacBook and use it in clam shell mode? I watch Hulu and YouTube a lot which causes the CPU load to increase and fans to spin up.... do I have to worry about over heating? I would be using the 24" monitor exclusively all the time and then take the MB when I go to class. Will this just ruin my MB pre-maturely?
When I plug it in, the computer makes a horrrible noise, and then when I press the power button, it flashes, and the noise becomes much louder. It origionally turned on to the hd selection screen when I first got it, and I accidentally left it on all day. When I got home, it was making the noise. I know it is not the hard drive, because it dieson't have one, and Imacs don't have fans.Â

For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a white plastic macbook which appears not to be able to connect to my wireless network. All the other PCs and a Mac Mini in the house connect fine, but the macbook does not.It has connected since i got it, both to the home network and a network in school, but today it promted me for the wireless password, connected a few times but did not give me a IP address, and now will not connect at all! The network appears in the list, i click on it, enter the wireless password, then it says connecting before connection failed.
The network setup is a Cisco router connected to the modem and then connected to the wireless too. There are no computers connected via cable to the network.
My boss just gave me a MBP Core I7 2,66Ghz / 4GB Ram, model mid-2010 for the business. It is equipped with Nvidia GeForce GT330M as PCIe video card. If I plug an external monitor, I have, after some time between minutes or hours of work, a weird video problem, which obliged me to power off/on the MBP. Sometimes I even can see my mouse moving, but I can't do anything with it. If I do not use the external monitor I do not have problem. This type of problem appears around 3-4 times a day and make the MBP unusable, as I'm loosing the recent work each time the problem occurred.

I have a MacBook Pro. I see that the new iMacs have a mini displayport input so that the 27" screen can be used with my MacBook Pro. I'm wondering how this works? Since there is obviously no button to push, how exactly do you switch between the iMac and the MacBook Pro displaying on-screen?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" imac and have been using an apple led cinema display with it. I have had no problems with the display until today. Yesterday I installed windows 7 via bootcamp and had some trouble with the second display being detected but after downloading all of the bootcamp updates it worked fine. Today I restart my computer back into OSX and the display does not work. I tried resetting the PRam or whatever but that didnt do anything. When I go to system preferences > display there is no longer an option to detect display and there are no longer options to change the screen resolution.
I spoke with an apple tech who has me installing an update but I dont think she really knew what was going on and I doubt this will work. When I reboot back into the windows partition the display works during start up and I see the windows logo. So I dont think its a hardware issue (also the display still works fine with my macbook pro). But as soon as startup finishes I get a black screen. Under the control panel windows still recognizes that there is a 2nd display attached and you can still drag items over to the other screen, I just cant see anything. All black.
While using Google Sketchup and several other prgrams concurrently my macbook air cpu heats up substantiall. I like keeping the air "open" to allow for maximum heat disipation but of course this keeps the air screen on while I only want to use my external monitor. Is the only way to turn of the air screen turning down the brightness and using the "Mirror Display" option or is there another setting which alows my to utilize only the external display while the screen is open on the air?

I was just watching a video on Youtube and then all of a sudden my entire machine freezes, and it logged out me out completely to the main login screen? There was that tiny loading rotate logo in the screen also. What could have caused this?

I would like to know how to turn off the macbook display without having to close it. I want to know that because if i don't close the macbook, both displays are on. If i close the macbook, the computer goes to sleep and then i press some keys on keyboard and the mac wake. In that point, if i open my macbook the display is turned off like i want. But i don't want to have to close the macbook all the time, and i don't want to leave the macbook closed because closed the temperature goes high.
Just purchased and hooked up a WD 2tb MyBook Studio Edition II external HD, the drive spins down on the HD but my iMac doesnt sleep while its plugged in.

I know I can set it to automatically do this after a few minutes, but I use a hot corner to turn my screensaver on, and would like to turn my display off when needed instead. I see no reason to keep the display powered just to show a pointless picture. I know I can hold down the decrease brightness button until it goes all the way down, but is there another way? View 5 Replies View RelatedI have seen people all over the internet saying that their MBP monitor would not turn on, but I have not seen my situation before. I used the computer a week ago (it's a work machine and I'm a part time intern) and both the external and internal monitor worked. I shut it down and when I came back the computer booted up to the external monitor but gave no video on the internal.
I shut down, removed the external monitor (connected by DVI cable) and rebooted. Nothing came up but when I connected the external again it worked fine. This had happened before, but when I shut down and rebooted without the cable connected it came back on immediately. I'm just hoping its not a bad graphics card or something that needs to go in for warranty.
My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.Â

Lately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?
I'm sure this should be simple but I can't figure it out.
I have my iMac connected to my TV and am using Plex to watch stuff on the TV.
What I'd like to do is turn my imac screen off without turning off the second monitor output (i.e. tv) as the imac screen is a bit bright/distracting (even on lowest brightness) when watching in the dark.
