OS X :: Setting Up Mac As A Remote Server NOT A Local Home Server

Mar 19, 2009

I have a Mac pro that I use at home. I want to set it up as a server. Like a hosting server that I can log on to anywhere in the world, not just on my local network. I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? I've tried searching but I keep find local home servers. Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing the first thing I need is a static IP, where do I get that?

OS :: 10.4 Server For Home Server Congifuration?

Dec 31, 2008

I have a PowerMac G4 MDD that I would like to turn into a home server (file server, mail, DNS, Web, Webmail). I don't really need the "network login" features unless necessary. I've looked around the net and have been unable to find a guide that suites my limited knowledge... (I'm a software engineer by trade and home administrator by hobby!) The articles I've found assume a knowledge base greater then I have. I don't have any formal IT training but my current server is a FreeBSD box that I've used and upgraded over the past ~10 years.) I would like to move my home server to OS X.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Add A Network Shortcut To The Dock Quickly?

May 1, 2012

We have two suites of apple mac's and we have an apple server (mac mini) They are all running Mac OSX SL 10.6.8 Basically I'd like the server to add an icon to a network share onto each dock so that I don't have to visit each and everyone manually. The guy who used to admin the mac's has left so I'm left to learn everything mac and at present I can only basically use a mac (i'm keen and learning). He used to copy a link over manually somehow I don't know, but the file is a .app file which I believe he placed into the applications folder and ran it like that. I've tried this and it doesnt work. Also he has somehow locked the desktops down so that all the menus are greyed out. The "Go" menu is completely greyed out. He's left instructions on how to unrestrict by using a specific username and password. Even under administrator they are unrestricted.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Difference Between Server And Desktop?

Apr 24, 2012

I'm in need of the Profile Manager from Lion Server for administering iPads in our environment.I understand that to do this really well within the environment, I'll need to be able to have a static IP and I will be able to arrange that. My question is more about what I may lose on my macbook if I go ahead and bump the OS to Lion Server instead of Desktop. The biggies on my machine for usage are, of course, iTunes, Parallels, logmein, evernote, MS Office, Garage Band, Logic, iMovie, etc.

What negative impacts am I in for if I move to server on this machine? Alternately, is there any way I can make a true, cheap OTA Profile Manager (a la MDM) on a Lion Desktop or even a windows desktop or server? I can't be spending a lot on this, but I could certainly afford Lion Server (but not a dedicated new machine for it).

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Upgrade The X (desktop) To Server?

Apr 29, 2012

I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Lion X. I also have a couple of MBPs. I'd like to have the Mac Mini act as the place where all the Time Machine backups go (I have a 1 TB external disk hooked up to the Mac Mini). Apparently, I must have Lion x *Server* running on the Mac Mini for it to become available as a Time Machine destination for the MBPs.  How can I upgrade my Mac Mini from Lion X to Lion X Server?

Hardware :: How To Set Up A Home Server From An Old G3

Feb 15, 2010

I have a friend wanting to get rid of an old gray polycarb cased G3 tower. The only spec I know about it is that it's running OS9 right now. I was thinking about loading it up with hard drives and storing all the music and movies on it.

I've done a quick google and found plenty of partial advice (such as upgrading the firmware before loading OSX)... but I was wondering if anyone had some personal experience to lend so I can learn from other folks experience? Any definitive DIY links that cover the subject?

Software :: My Home Folder And Desktop Are Different?

May 14, 2010

My home folder and desktop are different than before. I closed my macbook for the night to put it to sleep and i heard it reboot. I logged in as normal in the morning but my desktop was different and none of my pictures from iphoto or music from itunes was there, in fact it was as if i had never used the programs. I can find the my profile in the user section and all my stuff is in there but the computer wont load it and when i go to user permissions it says i dont have rights to modify the folder. I tried to rename the folder the original name i used but it wont let me rename it, in fact the computer thinks my profile is a drive and asks me if i want to eject it. I changed the name in april but this is mid may and its rebooted tons of times with the new name. how do i get it to boot to my correct user?

PowerPC :: Finding G4 Home Server Setup

Feb 1, 2008

I nabbed an old G4 Quicksilver from the office. 1ghz, dual processor, 1.5gb ram. I'm going to use it as a home file server to serve 1 powerbook and 1 pc laptop over a wireless airport network.

I've got it up and running headless in the basement, plugged into the airport. Out of sight, out of...well I don't have to listen to the thing. It's loud! Anyway, I can control it via VNC on my Powerbook. I use Vine Server and Chicken of the VNC for a viewer.

Here's the plan. Right now it has two 80gb drives in it. One has Tiger on it and one is empty. I just ordered two 500gb Seagate Barracuda drives for it. I believe that it is a late enough model that I don't have to worry about the 128gb limit. I hope that's right.

I also have 1 external 500gb firewire drive. 1 external 250gb drive and 2 external 160gb drives.

PowerPC :: Home Media Hub / Server Setup?

Oct 13, 2008

I would like to set up a home media hub. I have the following devices I would like to be able to access the media:

Powerbook (1.5Ghz)
Mac Mini (Core 2 duo)
PS3 -> HDTV
Old Pentium3 PC to an old Sony tube tv.

I also have an old Pentium4 PC which I was planning to use as the server. I was planning to throw in a 750gb HD instead of running this all off my external (which is what I use now hooked up to the Powerbook). How would I go about doing this? The router is hooked up to the mac mini at the moment.
