I have a second hard disk in my G5 that I can access by opening a finder window and clicking on my G5 in the "shared" area on the left in the sources list. However I'd simply like to make an alias to that drive on my desktop. I can't seem to do it though. I'm sure this is easy, and I did it before, but for some reason I can't seem to figure out how to do it again...
View 4 Replies10.6.3. When I make an alias on my desktop of a folder and then drag it to my dock it'll stick there but it will open like a folder. When I click it it will open Finder and then that alias. I want it to open like Stacks do, preferably in list mode with the flyout menus. Why can't I do this? I had it in Leopard but can't get it to work in SL. I checked all my settings and can't find anywhere to create a stack from an alias. Or from anything for that matter.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to move a file from my application folder and move it somewhere (e.g. desktop) it makes an alias of the file(or folder) rather than letting me move the file. I rebuilt permissions and all the other Voodoo.

So I am contemplating getting an SSD as my boot drive. I read a huge article on anandtech talking about how SSD degradation works. So I would only want the OS and Applications I have to be on the SSD. I know how to change my downloads to go to a different drive and set up my iTunes music folder somewhere else too. However, how could I make the desktop be on a drive in bay 2? Or photo booth pictures to go to the drive in bay 2? Or an iPhone backup? Basically, how can I get everything to not go on the SSD besides just the necessary files for the OS and my applications? I just don't want a bunch of random files being written to the SSD.

I have tried changing the rw permission and reselecting the original appliaction etc. But still unable to delete these alias icons. can someone point me in the right dircetion to use Terminal command such as rm -f file name to permanetely remove these left over icons. Before OS X Lion 10.7 I was able to chmod etc and delete the icon.

I want to create stacks for my Applications and put them in the dock by type. Utilities, Music & Video, iLife, etc. I think what I will do is make aliases for all the applications and put them in subfolders separate from the Applications folder, so then I have these 3-6 subfolders in my dock as stacks that I can display in Grid or Fan mode. And I don't have to see all my applications in one jumbled Grid and search for them.
Yes, I know Spotlight or QuickSilver could access them differently.
My question is, when I have created this duplicate system with the aliases to the apps, how do I remove the Alias (arrow) portion of the icon so that they look just like the actual icon down in the stack (or in my subfolders, etc)?

So if I have 10.6 installed and want to install Windows on a Mac, how can I create a 3rd (shared) FAT32 partition without reformatting the hard drive? I know how to without reformatting, but is there any way to just split my current partition into 2? I know how to do this on Windows, that is by shrinking the partition, but is there any similar function on a Mac so I don't lost existing files?
I don't want my MBP to show up in the shared list when I'm connected to my work network. I've unchecked everything in the shared list in system preferences but it still show up on other computers.

But they are drives (shared apparently, blue with the people on the drive as the logo) and if I click get info it says under server: file//localhost/home. The "net" drive appears as file//localhost/net. Sharing and permissions says - you can only read. I definitely don't run any servers, just browsing for the most part. I haven't noticed this drive until today.

We go to Network > My Network > and we can see the hard drive listed there for the one we want to connect to. It tries to connect w/ msg AFP Connection Status Looking up "machine name" and it never connects. Personal file sharing is on for the machine. Any ideas of what we can try to connect? Out of the 4 MACs here - we just cannot connect to this one.

I figured no biggie, when I got away from the head office they'd go away. But they didn't. And I can't figure out how to get rid of them.See attached photo.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNew user here, I'm showing "your-w92*******" I blanked out the rest, with a little monitor icon under "SHARED" in my finder? Any clue as to what it is and how I can get rid of it? If I right click I only get Open or Get Info as options. If I click Open I get "Connection Failed". If I click on Get Info it displays "PC Server" under kind. I did try to get my MBP to print in my PCs HP printer (unsucessfully) using cups. So I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I'd just like to delete it but don't know how.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop (10.6) I take on trips and a G5 (10.5) desktop that stays at home. I have a folder I keep synched between the two computers. When I get home I use my desktop to log into my laptop, pick the applicable drive and normally the drive icon mounts on my G5 desktop. Accept yesterday when I did this, no desktop icon appeared, however I did get a finder window to appear that represented this shared drive. The problem arose when I tried to synk the two drives using Synk. Even though this drive was supposed to be "mounted", there was no desktop icon for it and Synk could not see it. After fiddling, I was finally able to make an alias of this drive and put it on the desktop, and get Synk to find it, but the situation strikes me as strange. Why is this hard drive not mounting on my desktop like it usually does?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find out how to change the way finder presents itself while it is looking at a shared computer, because it appears to be doing this incorrectly, or is messed up some how. If you look at the screen shot of the highlighted drives of this shared computer, you will notice there are multiple instances of drive J and I would like to remove the repeated link. Also some of the drives have names associated with them, while others do not. I cannot figure out why some take the name given to the drive under windows in the macs finder window and why some do not? To throw another odd question in, drive G is not labeled movies anywhere, but rather is a drive labeled TV Shows under windows. Rebooting does nothing, as this has been there for months, even after a restore.

I am using the 1TB as a shared drive on the network (mac + pc's), and the second one (3TB) as the time machine backup drive. I have not been able to include the shared drive (1TB) in the time machine backup, it only included the imac hard drive. When I purchased the seconf time capsule, I was told this is possible. Can you help with any configuration recomendations to make this work?Â

Here is my problem: I want to access my iTunes library from a shared drive.
Here is my equipment:
1. Imac running iTunes 10.6
2. 1 week old Macbook Air running iTunes 10.6
3. 1 Timecapsule that is 1 day old, bought with the express purpose of putting my extensive iTunes library on it, and was assure I would be able to stream it.
4. An Airport express hooked to my stereo.
The concept was that the Air doesn't really have the capability to hold all my music, but I want to use it as a "remote" to select songs through iTunes and play them on my stereo. I did NOT want to leave my iMac on at all times and do homes haring that way.Therefore, I followed intructions fonund else where and moved my iTunes library from my iMac to the newly installed shared drive on the Time Capsule.I went into iTunes on the Air selected preferences, advanced, and changed the location of the Air's iTunes library to that of the one on the Time Capsule. It sees all the music. I close preferences.
I had a shared disk mounted on my Mac Pro.This drive was removed from the network without dismounting. Now the missing drive shows up under the DEVICES/SHARED tab on the Finder screen. It can't be moved to the trash. Rebooting doesn't help.
