IMac :: Faxing / There Is No Data/fax Modem?
Sep 25, 2010
I am new to the imac and notice there is no data/fax modem. I do scan documents and fax to recipients at times and have done seamlessly with my pc. Now it is time to move on and get on track with the imac. I have already had to replace my samsung scx 4100 multifunction, a loyal and robust item, mac dont support it. I have a scx 4500 coming soon. Surely in this day and age there must be some way of sending a fax from a computer that cost nearly ?2000. I have seen usb fax dongles for sale on ebay and other normal 56k external usb modems.....but what is the cost effective way forward

I just realized my iMacs have no internal modems, previously my only option to send faxes. How many others have realized this after the fact? Nothing to shed tears over, an external fax machine can fill the gap, I suppose.

I saw this article that one can fax with a mobile phone via bluetooth in 10.4:[URL]Pretty cool, except I have 10.5 and the directions don't work in 10.5. (There's no "advanced" selection when you option-click "More Printers".) I do see that 10.5 has a utility to add a bluetooth fax, which I went through, but couldn't get to work. (At no point did it ask to connect with my bluetooth phone.)

I have Lion and the old fax program I was using (PageSender), which will not upgrade for use with Lion. I am going back to using the built-in fax option that Mac has in the Printer functions. Is there a way to create and use a custom fa cover sheet? Or am I relegated to jus the simple text the printer window opens with? And, ues, I do need to have a fax - no everyone, especially the older folks that are clients for our business, are using email, or even using computers. That means to service all of my clients, I must fax.

Is there any sort of "bridge" software that allows a terminal emulation program, say, Z-Term, to use Skype as a modem? It seems silly to pay for connections to BBS's when I've got SkypeOut, but I haven't been able to find a way to do this.

I got called out to a support job the other day and found the lady had an iMac G3 Bondi Blue running Mac OS 8.5. The problem is with her internal 56k modem. It will no longer connect to the Internet and is reporting the error message:
"The modem is not responding properly. Reset the modem, check it's connections, and check that the correct port and modem type are selected in the modem control panel."
Now I'm no expert with the old school iMac's but that seems to me like the modem is knackered and she needs a new one. I did recommend just opening it up and slotting in a replacement internal modem but the client would rather have an External.
So I was wondering if any one around here knew what kind of modem I could purchase for her that would definitely be compatible with such an old version of Mac OS?
I have had a google around for it, but I can't seem to find a Hardware Compatability List or a modem that claims it is compatible with Mac OS 8 so I'm kind of grasping at straws here hoping that someone might happen to be using such an old version and might be able to point me in the right direction.

I currently have an old technology 2-Wire modem and I hear its not the "friendliest" with Macs. Especially when configured in wireless mode. Thus, I'm thinking of replacing our old 2-Wire with new technology Linksys WAG160N modem/router (for my current 10 Megs DSL service).

If you have this Linksys modem/Wireless Router, any good, bad & ugly on it?

The iMac is a G3 Slot-load SE, and the PowerMac is a G4 450MHz AGP. I happen to have an AGP that only came with the telephone jack, but no modem card connected inside. Both modems look the same in photos: 661-2213 (slot load) & 661-2186 (AGP). Is the only difference that the newer one has flex K56?

My father in law had a power failure at the house, and since then, he cannot connect to the internet via DSL Modem connected via ethernet cable. Being that he is 1000 miles away, I am trying to diagnose via phone. System Info: Imac 17", purchased new around 2006- Intel chip, running Tiger OS
Symptoms:
- Cannot connect via ethernet
- When searching system profiler, "Built-in Ethernet" shows up, but no MAC address
- In Network settings, he can see the various connection ports, but cannot check the box on "Built-in Ethernet" to turn the port on... won't let him.
- Wireless is not an option, I don't want to be 24/7 tech support
Diagnosis? I am thinking that the power surge may have fried the ethernet port on the motherboard.
Repair Solution: Planning on picking up the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. I know it doesn't have the correct drivers to run on Tiger, but found a driver online that claims it allows use of the usb adapter on Panther on up.
Questions - Does this sound like a fried ethernet port? Any other easy diagnostic tests I can do? Does the USB adapter sounds like a decent solution?

I'm new to the forum. I've tried searching out the answer to this question, but couldn't find any recent postings.
I've just received a new 2009 3.06ghz Intel iMac Core Duo 1TB ATI Radeon computer. My internet connection is dial-up (not Ethernet or WiFi). I just discovered there's no phone connection on the new iMac, and that I need a USB modem.
The computer booklet recommends the Apple External USB Modem. I found this one on Amazon:
[URL]
But the customer reviews suggest it may not be truly compatible with Intel machines. It may cause system freezes. I found a thread on this forum that mentioned the problem may have to do with using an unpowered USB hub. I won't be using the keyboard or any hub. The USB modem will be plugged directly into the back of my iMac.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, is there another USB modem that will?

Got my new iMac 27" i7 2.93 for three weeks ago. Everything was kind of fine but now everytime i boot it starts to write to the disk, and since you really can hear when the machine writes to the disk, it's obvious when it does it. The disk is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0
- I turned of spotlight indexing, rebooted, 30 minutes later it was still writing like there was no tomorrow.
- Checked Console.app, just Google Chrome trowing messages (which is running slower then on my old MBP Santa Rosa 5400 rpm).
- Ran disk utilty repair permissions, still no luck.
- Used Lingon to get rid of **** at startup, still no luck.
- No disk encryption.
The bottom line: The machine runs slower, boots applications slower and functions slower then my old MBP 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa 2007 with a 5400 rpm hdd. I tried to run a blu ray mkv from the internal disk, stuttered as hell and didn't work despite VLC being the only open application. Then i ran it from an external 5400 rpm Firewire drive and it worked flawlessy. What is up with this? Shall i reinstall and empty my disk?
Is there any software for checking what applications is currently writing to the HDD?

When I restart the g4/800mhz quicksilver while holding "t" it issues the sound of happiness and hums for a bit then clicks off. There is no regular error message on the imac but I did get "there is no osx disc on your old computer, etc". Is there any way to do this without having to be smart enough to put every file in the right place on the imac? These machines are supposed to be smarter than I am right? BTW every drive on the g4 has os 10.4 installed on it. I'm looking for that clean transition from one computer to the next. Also, is there some reason I wouldn't be able to install os 10.5 that came with the imac on a macbook/2.0?

I am hoping someone out there would be willing to assist me by getting a dump of their system SMC keys so I can do a comparison against my system. Ideally it needs to be done on a 2008 Alu 20in iMac with SMC version 1.29f1
You need to have SMCFanControl on your system and know where the smcFanControl.app is located.
Open Terminal
cd to the directory that has the smcFanControl.app
cd smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources
type ./smc -l
select and copy the output and save/post
exit terminal

so everyone knows the iMac hard drive can be a little noisy, but I just want to know what exactly is being "written" to the disk while doing normal tasks like web surfing.
I often use Safari and can hear the hard drive churning and Activity Monitor will show high red spikes of written data. What is this data being written? Is it normal?
Here's a screen shot of my Activity Monitor while web surfing and watching video with my EyeTV device. Does this look like normal activity to you?

Have purchased a used white intel core two duo imac. It's not in my possession yet.
1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
3. My understanding is that by using migration assistant, it will transfer all of those files necessary for a particular application...is this correct, and if so, will it then put those files where they should be?

I am a MS Windows (MCP) consultant based in California and unfortunately dont know much about Apple, Have worked with Linux and red hat to some stage and need some friendly expert advice as i have a customer who recently bought an Apple Mac notebook and asked me to transfer data ( e-mails , pics letters )from her (imac os10.4) to the new Apple Mac notebook.
typically, i am thinking transferring data via a wired network(Hub) would be the best way, based on the total data size , or alternatively an external HDD , Could someone provide me with some facts, tips, or perhaps a good guide line or a URL so I can achieve this with no embarrassment and a happy ending result for my client.

I currently sync my iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch on the XP box. My goals are to move all my songs, apps, movies/TV shows etc. over to my new mac. I want to stop using the XP machine all together.
In terms of steps. I'm thinking I need to do this:Ensure both XP and Mac are running the most current version of iTunes - if not upgrade them Sync and back-up each device one last time on the XP machine Transfer the data (via the apple FAQ above) Sync each device with the mac? Will the Mac recognize the devices just like the XP machine did? Will I need to transfer purchases from each device?
