I have purchased an imac to replace my mac pro. How do send al my data from the mac pro to the imac? I can't tkae both machines in to have apple perform the service. I will sell the mac pro and will need to completely wipe it clean so my data is forever gone from the machine.

I have been trying to migrate my data from my PC to my new mac but it always seems to fail.At first, I would begin the migration assistant and then after a while the PC would just crash.But then I finally thought I managed to get it working. It said that process was complete (on both the PC and mac), but there was no data on my computer and no music in my iTunes.Â
PS I also have an Ethernet cable if that's of any use but I don't know how to use it.

So I had Macbook Pro 13 prior to getting the new Macbook Air. Everything is in sync except the iTunes data on my Air. I didn't use Migration utility because I didn't want to completely mirror my old settings. I've been trying to migrate data to a new RAID setup, but have been running into the error code 36 issue where Mac created invisible files are killing the file transfers. At any rate, I tried about three different directory cleanup utilities and for the most part got almost all the data to move. Now I'm onto the last bit which was giving me permissions errors as well.I used Batchmod to make everything read write and I ALSO CLEARED THE XTARS. Worked like a charm and everthing transfered. HOWEVER. Killing the extened attributes of the files turned them all into Executible files with no program ownership. BTW, there are font files so there are hundreds of them. Is there anyway to re-assign them or get some of the attributes back?Â

I have a new iMac with two disks- the SSD and the 1TB hard drive. Lion was loaded onto the SSD, so that's my start up drive. I need to migrate all the data from my old iMac (also has Lion) to the new one. When I run Migration Assistant, it thinks I want the old mac migrated , which of course, doesn't have enough space for all the data. I can't find any way to tell it to migrate to the 1TB hard drive.Â

Is it safe for me to migrate all the contents of my powerbook G4 12" to my brand new 13" aluminum macbook? I thought it would be too much trouble to load all my iPhoto pictures, iTunes music, registered programs, and firefox bookmarks. Any downside to doing this? I'm assuming since there are no viruses on OSX, that I will be fine transfering everything directly over to the new laptop are, correct? It's just too bad this is going to take 3 hours!!! View 24 Replies View RelatedI know there are numerous posts already about whether to 'clean install' or upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I can't seem to find an answer to my question anywhere.
I have two computers that I've already upgraded to Snow Leopard - an iMac that's about a year old (with data on it that has been migrated between macs since Tiger) and a brand new MBP which is unblighted by any migrated data. The MBP seems much faster for the upgrade, but the iMac seems a little slower.
My instinct here is to erase my iMac hard drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch, which would presumably solve the sluggish performance issues.
My question is this: I have all my iMac data backed up on Time Machine. Is performing a clean install and then restoring my mac from Time Machine going to give me exactly the same problems as upgrading did? Or would it be better to selectively move data back to my iMac after a clean install?
If I need to do this the hard way (as I suspect) and selectively bring back my data to leave the junk behind, is there anything I can do before running a clean install to make this more painless?
How do you migrate itunes data from an external PC drive to a Mac Mini? It does not seem to recognize the hard drive.

I tried to use the "migration assistant" to migrate data form my old MBP to my new MBP. Both with Lion.it just clonated the old MBP into the new one (the main user), wich replaced some new apps (ilife, and others) with the old vervions tha were im the old MBP.I tried to erase the Macintosh HD, reinstall Lion from scratch but it happened again. I have a 15 inch 2010 MBP. When I got it, I migrated all my info from my previous MB. About 4-5 months into using it I started having issues w/ Kernel Panics. I did upgrade the HDD and RAM but the Kernel Panics happened before all of that. I took it to the Apple store and they ran some test on the hardware and software and said they couldn't find anything. Their advice was to just do a clean install. I wanted to avoid doing a clean install on all costs. Anyhow, I said what the who last night and backed up important files and did the clean install,
I have to say that the computer feels much more stable now. I was having a lot of little issues w/ Snow Leopard prior to the clean install. Most of that probably comes w/ me playing around w/ settings a bit too much. Also, I'll admit, I do torrent some software. In my opinion, thats what caused the kernel panics. Only time will tell if I continue to get kernel panics even after a clean install, but I think I'm good to go. So, do you guys prefer doing clean installs or just migrating your data? When Lion comes out, will you clean install or migrate to it?
I have two very similar iMac G5s, both 2ghz, both OSX 10.4.11. When connecting by Firewire and following the steps in Migration Assistant, I get no disks appearing on the destination machine, I get Cannot Connect error message, any ideas? Would Ethernet work better? The source machine will not burn DVDs so that option is out. Can I swap hard drives?

View 2 Replies View RelatedGot my new iMac 27" i7 2.93 for three weeks ago. Everything was kind of fine but now everytime i boot it starts to write to the disk, and since you really can hear when the machine writes to the disk, it's obvious when it does it. The disk is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0
- I turned of spotlight indexing, rebooted, 30 minutes later it was still writing like there was no tomorrow.
- Checked Console.app, just Google Chrome trowing messages (which is running slower then on my old MBP Santa Rosa 5400 rpm).
- Ran disk utilty repair permissions, still no luck.
- Used Lingon to get rid of **** at startup, still no luck.
- No disk encryption.
The bottom line: The machine runs slower, boots applications slower and functions slower then my old MBP 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa 2007 with a 5400 rpm hdd. I tried to run a blu ray mkv from the internal disk, stuttered as hell and didn't work despite VLC being the only open application. Then i ran it from an external 5400 rpm Firewire drive and it worked flawlessy. What is up with this? Shall i reinstall and empty my disk?
Is there any software for checking what applications is currently writing to the HDD?

View 10 Replies View RelatedWhen I restart the g4/800mhz quicksilver while holding "t" it issues the sound of happiness and hums for a bit then clicks off. There is no regular error message on the imac but I did get "there is no osx disc on your old computer, etc". Is there any way to do this without having to be smart enough to put every file in the right place on the imac? These machines are supposed to be smarter than I am right? BTW every drive on the g4 has os 10.4 installed on it. I'm looking for that clean transition from one computer to the next. Also, is there some reason I wouldn't be able to install os 10.5 that came with the imac on a macbook/2.0?

You need to have SMCFanControl on your system and know where the smcFanControl.app is located.
Open Terminal
cd to the directory that has the smcFanControl.app
cd smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources
type ./smc -l
select and copy the output and save/post
exit terminal

I am new to the imac and notice there is no data/fax modem. I do scan documents and fax to recipients at times and have done seamlessly with my pc. Now it is time to move on and get on track with the imac. I have already had to replace my samsung scx 4100 multifunction, a loyal and robust item, mac dont support it. I have a scx 4500 coming soon. Surely in this day and age there must be some way of sending a fax from a computer that cost nearly ?2000. I have seen usb fax dongles for sale on ebay and other normal 56k external usb modems.....but what is the cost effective way forward

I often use Safari and can hear the hard drive churning and Activity Monitor will show high red spikes of written data. What is this data being written? Is it normal?

Have purchased a used white intel core two duo imac. It's not in my possession yet.
1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
