IMac :: 56k External Modem Compatible With Mac OS 8.5?
Jan 27, 2010
I got called out to a support job the other day and found the lady had an iMac G3 Bondi Blue running Mac OS 8.5. The problem is with her internal 56k modem. It will no longer connect to the Internet and is reporting the error message:
"The modem is not responding properly. Reset the modem, check it's connections, and check that the correct port and modem type are selected in the modem control panel."
Now I'm no expert with the old school iMac's but that seems to me like the modem is knackered and she needs a new one. I did recommend just opening it up and slotting in a replacement internal modem but the client would rather have an External.
So I was wondering if any one around here knew what kind of modem I could purchase for her that would definitely be compatible with such an old version of Mac OS?
I have had a google around for it, but I can't seem to find a Hardware Compatability List or a modem that claims it is compatible with Mac OS 8 so I'm kind of grasping at straws here hoping that someone might happen to be using such an old version and might be able to point me in the right direction.
I'm new to the forum. I've tried searching out the answer to this question, but couldn't find any recent postings.
I've just received a new 2009 3.06ghz Intel iMac Core Duo 1TB ATI Radeon computer. My internet connection is dial-up (not Ethernet or WiFi). I just discovered there's no phone connection on the new iMac, and that I need a USB modem.
The computer booklet recommends the Apple External USB Modem. I found this one on Amazon:

But the customer reviews suggest it may not be truly compatible with Intel machines. It may cause system freezes. I found a thread on this forum that mentioned the problem may have to do with using an unpowered USB hub. I won't be using the keyboard or any hub. The USB modem will be plugged directly into the back of my iMac.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if not, is there another USB modem that will?
Is there any sort of "bridge" software that allows a terminal emulation program, say, Z-Term, to use Skype as a modem? It seems silly to pay for connections to BBS's when I've got SkypeOut, but I haven't been able to find a way to do this.
I am new to the imac and notice there is no data/fax modem. I do scan documents and fax to recipients at times and have done seamlessly with my pc. Now it is time to move on and get on track with the imac. I have already had to replace my samsung scx 4100 multifunction, a loyal and robust item, mac dont support it. I have a scx 4500 coming soon. Surely in this day and age there must be some way of sending a fax from a computer that cost nearly ?2000. I have seen usb fax dongles for sale on ebay and other normal 56k external usb modems.....but what is the cost effective way forward
I currently have an old technology 2-Wire modem and I hear its not the "friendliest" with Macs. Especially when configured in wireless mode. Thus, I'm thinking of replacing our old 2-Wire with new technology Linksys WAG160N modem/router (for my current 10 Megs DSL service).

If you have this Linksys modem/Wireless Router, any good, bad & ugly on it?
I'm planning on buying an external hard drive soon. I browsed through the forums and I saw a couple threads discussion about external HDs. My question is, is there an external HD that you can read/write on a Mac AND a PC? I know formatting to FAT32 is one way of doing it, but I was just wondering if there are any HDs out there that doesn't need formatting for you to be able to read/write on a Mac and a PC.
The iMac is a G3 Slot-load SE, and the PowerMac is a G4 450MHz AGP. I happen to have an AGP that only came with the telephone jack, but no modem card connected inside. Both modems look the same in photos: 661-2213 (slot load) & 661-2186 (AGP). Is the only difference that the newer one has flex K56?
Does anyone know a good external HD that will work well with both a Mac and PS3? I'd like to get a 1TB size HD. If not a specific brand, what specifications should I look for that will work for both?
My father in law had a power failure at the house, and since then, he cannot connect to the internet via DSL Modem connected via ethernet cable. Being that he is 1000 miles away, I am trying to diagnose via phone. System Info: Imac 17", purchased new around 2006- Intel chip, running Tiger OS
Symptoms: - Cannot connect via ethernet - When searching system profiler, "Built-in Ethernet" shows up, but no MAC address - In Network settings, he can see the various connection ports, but cannot check the box on "Built-in Ethernet" to turn the port on... won't let him. - Wireless is not an option, I don't want to be 24/7 tech support
Diagnosis? I am thinking that the power surge may have fried the ethernet port on the motherboard.
Repair Solution: Planning on picking up the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. I know it doesn't have the correct drivers to run on Tiger, but found a driver online that claims it allows use of the usb adapter on Panther on up.
Questions - Does this sound like a fried ethernet port? Any other easy diagnostic tests I can do? Does the USB adapter sounds like a decent solution?
i have a powerbook with a crummy internal soundcard. i want to add 5.1 surround sound to it but i cant seem to find a mac compatible external sound card. Some people say that the sound blaster extigy is compatible but mac support is no where to be found on the extigy web pages. Can anyone confirm that the sound blaster extigy is compatible? and or list a couple other mac compatible external sound cards which are under 200 dollars?
Looking for some specific but simple advice on buying a raid. If you could teach or share your thoughts, but fair warning I am not a tech and get easily confused. But seriously, port multipliers, pci card bottle necks, quad eSata ports, enclosures with raid and esata interface, pci-x? raid and port multipliers, hardware/software raids? What cables go where.
My specific needs and specs: I am looking for a fast drive configuration for use with my Intel 2008 macPro (Haprertown) OS: osx and windows vista. Needs to be compatible with both operating platforms. External solution please, the raid will be used with one box and will not need to be shared with other computers. Used for Video editing and high-resolution image sequence playback. I am looking to reach up to 300mbs if I have the budget, but that speed requirement might be too expensive for me, I am not sure? No redundancy or security required, everything is non critical. I will only need to run Raid 0 I do not want to do internal storage. To help with cost, I can get away with 250-500gigs, as space is not necessary. Think, speed, speed, speed. Price, Can I do this for $450?
The homework I have done thus far: The SSD drives are perfect for me but the price point is a little pricy when I can do similar speeds for less cash. Unfortunately I have ruled out SSDs. I think I am going the way of an eSata raid, just don't know how to configure something close to 300mbs? Do I do a pci raid card? Do I build a raid and buy a card? External, High speed Raid 0, no redundancy,(300mbs). Low storage capacity (to drive down cost for me if it is relevant?) Compatible with my Intel mac pro OSX Harpertown dual quad. Disk solution can be formatted to be used for either OS (vista or osx).
I have just purchased a new IMAC and it will not pick up Wifi from my home router/modem. I have called my provider and they think theres something wrong with the computer as even in network the splat beside the wifi is yellow not green??
I am looking for an external hard drive for my mac. I need one that is pretty cheap but works. 100 GB or more, because I don't need that much memory. I am using a macbook white. What should I get?
i was just wondering. i just ordered theHITACHI H3640US 640GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache USB 2.0 Silver External Hard Drive. Is it Compatible with Macs or MacBookPros?
Could I use an external Bluray drive with the new MBA as long as it is compatible with OSX?I know the MBA's have the capability of using an optical drive on another computer. Is it possible to create an audio CD from the MBA's library and write it to a disc on another computer?
My girlfriend is looking for an external disc drive for her 17 in mbp, and had a few questions. Do the external drives have to be mac compatible? or will any external drive work (like one from newegg, like: [URL] Any suggestions of brands/models?
My local Mediamarket (in Germany) has them on offer and I was gonna buy my girlfriend one to back up her photo collection. But the sales assistant told me they are not compatible with Macs. Given that Mediamarket staff are renowned for being clueless, I was hoping somebody could elaborate on potential compatibility issues? The box does state FOR PC on the front, and only lists Windows OS in the system requirements but the Seagate website contradicts this and says Mac OSX 4.8 upwards will work.
Since not all Portable External Drives are Mac compatible, I need to ask for your advise, Any 250gb or 320gb will be ok, of course something high quality, and compact as well.
I see a lot of info about problems with various external drives working with Time Machine. I have Lion 10.7.3 and find that my old external drive that worked with PCs doesn't work. So, does Apples have a list of recommended esternal drives or at least a list of ones Apple knows are compatible?
I have a Samsung HX-M101UAB/g 1TB external hard drive that is running NTFS-3G drivers that don't work with OSX Lion. Is there anyway that i can get this external hard drive to work now that i have upgraded?
I bought an external blu ray writer and cannot make use of it as os x does not seem to support it and when I use makemkv files they are extremely choppy. I also have windows installed on a second partition, however the software included (cyberlink power dvd) will only play audio and no video.
I have not yet bought the new Imac. I am fairly new to macs having used a PC my entire life. But i look forward to the change and hope it's good. My major concern only now is that i was wondering if there's anyway to hook my PS3 to this new imac since the displays are phenomenal and it lacks a blu-ray player. The 21.5" has no DVI input while the 27" does, so i'm guessing i'll have to get the 27" if i want my PS3 to connect in anyway? If there is no perfect way to get 1080p then let me know and i will stick to the 21.5" since the PS3 connecting to the 27" was the only reason i was buying the larger model.
They are going to make something from ground up. Guess what that means? Apple iOS and Mac OS will be combined into one OS. So, it will most likely require new hardware. Are all of mac buyers going to be screwed in a year from now on? I doubt it will be 100% compatible
