View 1 RepliesI have the last G5 imac made before Apple went Intel 4 years ago. It works fine. It has wifi.
But heres the deal. I just moved into an apartment in NYC. There are TONS of free wifi hotspots down the block from me that I can pick up on my ipod touch when I go outside. But INSIDE my apartment, my imac is out of range.
I need SPECIFIC advice on what I need to extend the reach of my imac to pic up wifi signals.
Again, these are FREE hotspots, so it's all legal.
Do I need an antenna? Or something else? Or both? What kind and how would I hook it up. How far is the reach? Be detailed, but keep it simple so a laymen can understand it.
I have an Apple mini DVI to VGA adapter from my imac to a second, mirror monitor. It works fine. However, how can I extend the length from the mini DVI side of the adapter, as currently this adapter (miniDVD to VGA connector) is only 6 inches long?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently use a time capsule for wifi at home. It's located in my basement. The problem is the signal strength on the second floor isn't the greatest. I was wondering if I could extend the network by running a cable from the time capsule to the second floor and plug it into an airport express. Is this setup referred to as a "bridge"?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAlright, I have an old Macbook Pro that is unused, and I thought the other day it might be worth investigating using it as a second monitor, getting extra computing power, etc.
So, is it possible to use a second macbook pro as a second display for my current macbook pro?
Or, is there something else I could do with it that might make use of it asides from selling it? (It wouldn't fetch much)
My MacBook Pro doesn't get receive wifi very well in my office, but my partners PC laptop does. I know there is a way to set up internet sharing so that the PC shares its internet connection to my laptop, but I do not know how to do this.
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8, he has XP.
I was wondering how I would go about expanding the windows partition (I have a ton of free space on the mac side and about 23 GB on the Windows side).
As I understand it, a way to do this would be to go into Disk Utility, shrink the OSX drive, boot into Windows, type in "Disk Management" in the run box, and then click something along the lines of "expand into free space".
I have an Airport Extreme (goes up to N) as my main router, and I'd like to extend my signal with a Linksys router that is a/b/g (no N support) and maybe an a/b/g Airport Express. Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?
Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?
Recently I wiped OS X out and installed XP alone. I used the Leopard disc to install the necessary drivers and everything seems to work well except for my second monitor.
I have an HP w1907 connected to my MBP through DVI, and I followed my usual process of:
Right Click on Desktop > Properties > Settings > Click on second monitor > Click "Extend Desktop to this device" ...and nothing seems to happen. I've tried changing the resolution, unplugging the monitor and trying again, but I can't get any result.
I got a friend who just moved into one of our apartments at back of our home and I want to extend the range of my wireless router so he can connect his PS3. The only two ideas I have so far was to get an extending phone cable and move the modem as close down the hall of my second floor abode, however I still don't think the signal strength be enough.
So I found out be repeaters and I like an explanation more as to how these works, what model/brand would be easy to configure for mac, cons, etc.
I have a linksys wireless system set up in my home right now, but am trying to extend my wireless range to a few more rooms. I have tried to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote and have the linksys as the main station, but it doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know if this is possible (i.e. have the linksys as a main station and Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote)? One a similar note, even after resetting the Airport Extreme Base Station and connecting it directly to the DSL modem, I cannot connect to the internet. The computers connect fine to the wireless network, but the internet will not load.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNew here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.
My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).
I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.
Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?
I use Fusion 4 on my Mac and now need to extend a disk from 200GB to 300GB; VMWare tells me there's not enough space on disk, although it has ~400GB of unused space. Since defragging is not a Mac thing, is there anything else I need/can do to convince Fusion to extend my drive? I know this is a Mac forum but since it's on a Mac *and* VMWare's forum didn't give my anything in almost 2 days...

i am trying to extend a network with an airport express but the airport express cannot get a valid IP address and flashes amber.
my setup is as follows: netgear router/modem which handles PPPoE connected via ethernet to time capsule which handles the wireless network.
time capsule is working fine and has a valid IP address but airport express doesn't.
i have checked 'allow this network to be extended' on the TC, and connection sharing is in bridge mode.
i wonder if someone could help me troubleshoot this
I can't seem to get my airport express to extend the guest network from my new airport extreme. It will extend the private network but the guest network doesn't show up in the list under airport utility. Is there anyway to extend the internet only except to one computer which needs to share a printer back to the original extreme?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Airport Extreme and I would like to extend my network with an airport express but not sure if the airport express is only extending the network if it needs to be plugged into a ethernet if it is only bouncing the network on. Or does it have to have a fixed ethernet wire in it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an airport express for itunes music and a print server. I have it setup as a client and once in a while i have audio drop out and itunes stops responding. I never have this problem when only playing through the laptop speakers.
the setup is a belking wireless router, nas hardwired to the belkin, ae client and wireless laptop all wireless g.
i thought about using the ae as an extender hoping this proble would go away but do I have to tell the laptop which router it would be hooked to if the se is an extender?
I recently upgraded my Airport Extreme form the old "UFO looking" Airport to a the new Airport Extreme N and am having trouble extending the network using the older airport as a remote in WDS. I have followed both of the following articles without any success.[URL:...] I followed the 2nd doco (ap2124) up to point 6 and I followed the 1st doco (ap2045) from the start and applied the changes, but my older (ufo looking) airport extreme don't seem to connect to the newer Airport Extreme N. I contacted Apple support and after checking with the product specialist, they advised me that I couldn't mix the 2 devices and I would have to buy the Airport Express N and extend my network using the Express. my question is, has anyone extended their network by using 2 different Airport base stations?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a home network where all devices (various Macbook pros, xbox, ps3, pc's, etc.) connect wirelessly via airport extreme: works great. I am trying to connect an ipod touch from a distance of about 75 feet, and although it will connect, it drops the signal now and again (signal strength goes from 1 bar to no bars). I have this older dell "Wireless 2350 Broadband Router" and I am wondering if I could add this either in a wired or wireless configuration to repeat the base station signal (i.e., to extend the range of the network). I know that I could just run out and buy an airport express to accomplish this, but I'd like to see if I could "recycle" the dell router first. Whatever I do, I don't want to muck up the primary network in the process.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Airport Extreme with Dual Band Networks, and an airport express 802.11n edition. I have setup the Base station to do N,A,G,and B Networks, but I only want the express to EXTEND the G Network. How can I make that happen?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have more media than internal hd space and I want to extend my iTunes library with my external hd. I have a Macbook Pro so I want a good chunk of my library on my internal drive so I can take it with me. When I am set up at home, however, I want to be able to extend my iTunes library with an external drive, particularly so I can access all of my media from my apple tv.
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router.
I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty. I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error. Try again." Well, tried again and still no luck.

Still waiting on my new 27" i7 imac. Trying to figure out if current desk is suitable. Can someone tell me the dimension in inches of the imac 27 from top of desk to the top of the imac
View 7 Replies View RelatedI hope you don't mind helping a guy out in his choice in what he truly needs... so I guess I'll get down to the basics.
First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
- Needs to be able to record up to 32 tracks of audio
- Needs to be able to render high quality tracks
- Minimal latency
- Able to run some of the less graphic intensive games out now
- Easy on the eyes for extended periods of time
Oh, I'm also an amateur filmmaker, I love filming, editing, and producing, etc.Would you guys suggest the i5? i7? Oh, and what clock speed does the 2.93GHz i7 run at when in turbo-boost using all cores?Oh, and what's the resale value of the iMac compared to the MBP? I heard the MBP retain pretty well, is the same true of iMac's?
System Spec: Late 09 21" 3.06, GeForce 9400, 4gb ramCurrently I have itunes and safari running, if i enable the visualizer my imac is noticeably slower, especially when browsing the internet.I thought it might be the fact I was running a second 1080p display from the 9400 would have caused the slow down. But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.
I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using [URL] with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that.
So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.
HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says "looking up google.ca..." or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site. When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains.
ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine.
Any thoughts on this?
The Mini Has Some Great Software On it, Could i Use Migration Assistant To Transfer The Programs To My iMac Without Losing My Data On My iMac? Or is There Any Other Way?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI sent an email to Steve Jobs about my yellow tint 21.5 iMac issues (three exchanges, all affected, resulting in a refund). I got a call from Dena at Executive Care within 24 hours.
She said they are aware of the problem and do not know how widespread it is. According to Dena, the issue is not resolved and that ordering a new iMac will not result in a fixed display.
She said the engineers are working on it now and they are not sure if it's hardware (most likely) or software related. Further Apple stores cannot do repairs because they haven't determined what the issue is.
I have been reading and reading but I can't seem to find the answer. Im trying to figure out if the optical drive for the iMac has a slimline sata connector or a standart sata connector. Reason is I'd like to install an SSD and use an optibay adaptor.
