IMac :: Slow Wireless N Site Lookup For New IMac And Linksys WRT610N Router?

Aug 12, 2008

I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using [URL] with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that.

So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.

HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says "looking up google.ca..." or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site. When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains.

ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine.
Any thoughts on this?

Hardware :: Linksys Router With New IMac?

Dec 25, 2008

My router is a WRT54GS with DD-WRT firmware. It works fine with my old eMac (w/ original airport) and every PC in my house, but not with my new iMac (w/ airport extreme).

At first I thought I might need to power cycle it, but it didn't work. Then I thought it might be conflicting with something, but that wasn't the problem. On a side note, I also have a WRTU54G-TM for VOiP phone. It works with both Macs equally, unlike the GS. The only problem with that one is it will randomly kick my Macs off the network and I end up turning off airport and turning it back on when that happens.

IMac :: Connecting Via 5Ghz Dual Band Between 27" And Linksys WRT400N Router?

Mar 11, 2010

I installed a WRT400N router via my PC several months back and used an adapter to utilize the Dual Band, Wireless N network. The product worked very well on my PC.

I recently bought a 27" iMac. It easily connected to the 2.4 Ghz Wireless N network. Performance and reliability are both good. However, I cannot see the 5Ghz network listed as an available network. Video streaming is not as good without the 5Ghz network.

Supposedly the 27" iMac (with built in wireless N) can achieve the Dual Band connectivity with Airport Extreme...but I do not want to spend money to replace a perfectly good router.

I currently have an old technology 2-Wire modem and I hear its not the "friendliest" with Macs. Especially when configured in wireless mode. Thus, I'm thinking of replacing our old 2-Wire with new technology Linksys WAG160N modem/router (for my current 10 Megs DSL service).

Hardware :: Get A Time Capsule Or A Linksys Wireless N Router?

Mar 23, 2009

I have several questions before I make my purchase. I've got 2 computers in my upstairs bedroom that are wireless. I currently have a Wireless router which is a Linksys WRT54G.

It's already getting on in age so I was thinking of replacing it with a better wireless router. I'm deciding weather I should go with a Linksys N or go the apple route. Will I get faster internet if I go with a Linksys Wireless N? What is the difference between G and N?I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule because I wanted an automatic backup of my data.Is a time capsule going to perform the same as a Linksys? Which router is better?

what is the difference between Time Capsule and Airport extreme. Are they basically the same with the only difference being the hardrive? If I get a Time Capsule then do I still need a Linksys router? Is it easy to setup a wireless network using a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme? Is it easy to configure as a Linksys?

Hardware :: Power Mac G4 With Airport Card To Linksys Wireless Router?

Oct 11, 2006

I have a Linksys wireless router set up (WRT54G) and my PC desktop and laptop connect fine to the internet with wire and wireless. I installed an airport card in our Power Mac G4 but this cannot detect my wireless network. I have it connected now with an ethernet cable running through the kitchen but want to get rid of the cable.

Is there a compatibility issue with airport and a Linksys wireless network? The Mac recognizes the airport card so I hope that means that it is good. (I got it from eBay used) This Mac is the farthest away from the router so I guess my next try is to see if I can move the router a little bit closer.

I am a newbie to wireless so possibly I have a setting wrong. I did tell the router the mac addresses of all of the computers that I want to connect.
Any advice?

IMac :: Can"T Use As A Wireless Router

This is because my ps3 is in one room and my Imac is in another. my router is more or less in the middle of my ps3 and imac both of which i connect wirelessly to the internet. Since ive done this my signal upstairs is poor. So, can I use my Imac to boost the signal upstairs. My wireless router was plugged into my Imac beforehand and the signal upstairs was fine. but since ive had to move the router for my ps3 its further away from upstairs and the signal has dropped. short of moving the router back.

Desktops :: IMac Not Connecting To Wireless Router

Dec 17, 2010

I recently purchased an iMac desktop and installed it in my home office. It worked fine, except that the airport was connecting erratically to the wireless router, which is located about 5-7 meters away in a different room. I tried re-positioning the iMac to have better 'reception' but the problem persists. I can see the number of airport connectivity 'bars' changing every second and then going off fully. Very frustrating.

Could there be a problem with the iMac antenna? A colleague told me that if there's a wireless phone in the house near the router that can cause problems. Another told me that the router (a basic D-link 802.11g, 5 yrs old) needs to be replaced.

I am running Leopard and using a Linksys Router. I began with the following:

On the iMac:
Ethernet Connection (manual)
IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255

Last, I tried using making the primary and secondary DNS addresses the same. Every time I have the same problem.... it fails when testing the DNS.

MacBook Pro :: Super Slow Wireless With New Router?

Jul 9, 2008

So I recently bought a Linksys WRT160N to replace an old router in my house. The network worked fine with the old router before it died... Browsing speed was great, download speed was great. Now that I have the WRT160N however, my network speeds have plummeted. And it's JUST my MBP... the rest of the computers in my house are Windows PCs and they are surfing away at supersonic speeds compared to what I'm getting on my MBP.

At first I thought it may be the wireless security (WPA) so changed it to WEP... no change. So then I just disabled it altogether... no change.

The Windows PCs are getting speed of about 2000 Kbps whereas I'm getting between 150 and 500 Kbps. I've already replaced the router once...

Is there anything I can do, or is this router just not going to play nice with Mac?

BTW- I have a 2.2 SR MBP

OS X :: Slow Internet After Resetting Wireless Router?

Sep 9, 2009

So I have a wireless router from cox cable (motorola surfboard SBV5220). I also have my airport extreme base station connected to the wired ethernet in the other half of my house. So I have the cox motorola router hard wired to the ethernet in-wall outlets. And When I plug my computer directly into the ethernet plug in the walls it works great and fast. So I have the airport extreme plugged into the ethernet port in the wall to use wireless on the other half of the house that the motorola router doesn't reach very well.

Everything worked great until the motorola router went out one day and we had to reset it. Once we reset it, the wireless internet from the airport extreme started acting up. Half the time it works fine and just as fast as it did before. The other half it doesn't load a full page. It's not even working at all really. I tried to see if the problem happens when using the internet from the motorola router, but it wasn't consistent. Sometimes the airport internet worked fine while the motorola was in use on another computer and sometimes it didn't. I haven't been able to figure out a consistent cause.

I also had the airport express plugged in as a wireless extended for the airport extreme, but I took that out as it was pretty unnecessary. Also, I got a new mac mini and need to run it off the airport extreme wireless also. When I turn off the mac mini and use my macbook with airport extreme the problem still persists.

I tried google-ing and then searching on this forum and got many unrelated topics. I would really appreciate anybody pointing me in the right direction. I am a semi-newb when it comes to networking, etc...

PowerPC :: IMac G3 Wireless Speed Slow

Jul 9, 2009

The iMac G3 is a 2002 model, has a 600 mghz processor and 1 GB RAM. It does not have an AirPort wireless card and Apple no longer manufacturers an AirPort card for this machine (which I bought used), so I bought a USB wireless adapter that appears to pick up a pretty strong signal from my Verizon FiOS router, strongest of course when parked next to the router. Unfortunately, I am only able to generate 3.5-4.2 mbps download speed no matter how close I am to the router, whereas the machine can consistently download at 12-15 mbps with a direct ethernet connection. The FiOS router can download at speeds in excess of 20 mbps. Is there some setting I'm overlooking that can improve the wireless connection speed or am I going to have to settle for wired use only?

IMac :: Wireless Connection Unstable - Drop - Randomly Slow Down To Crawl

Mar 18, 2010

I moved my room around yesterday, and originally my iMac was in the far corner of my small bedroom. After the rearrange, now its on the opposite side of the room, and since then the iMacs internet connection has been unstable. It'll drop, randomly slow down to a crawl etc. My MacBook is fine, and so is my PS3, its just my iMac thats causing havok, all because I moved it from one side of the room to the other. I can't be because I've simply moved the iMac from one side of the room to the other can it? My MacBook can pick up a strong signal from the bottom of the garden, so the iMac really has no excuse.

OS X :: Unable To Get New Linksys Router To Connect

Nov 12, 2010

I was getting tired of my belkin54g router that kept dropping connections, so I went and got a new linksys wireless G router. I popped in the CD, followed all the instructions and when I get to the end of the install it says that the configuration was successful, but it could not verify an internet connection.

I figure it's just a hiccup and try to connect with my laptop via airport- success! I get my homepage. But then, I can't get to any other page at all.

It says it can't find the page, but my network connection in system preferences says I'm connected. I go to my desktop which has the hardwire connection and I can't get on the internet at all, but again, my network connection in system preferences says I'm connected- green light, IP address and all.

So I figured I did something wrong and restored the factory settings on the router. Same thing happens again. WTF? This should have been easy. What the hell is wrong with this thing?

It should be noted that if I type in my IP address, the router info comes up immediately. I am also just connecting my modem to my desktop to post now. My internet connection works fine.

OS X :: Internet Sharing Through Linksys Router?

Dec 25, 2010

I'm new to Macs. I live ~200 yards from my Mom's house. I set her up with a b/g/n router. My Imac picks up the "n" signal just fine. My ps3, which only does b/g, gets no signal. I have an old linksys wrt54g wifi router. I tried plugging it into my imac and setting the imac to internet sharing through ethernet, but it didn't work. Stringing an ethernet cable isn't an option. Am I missing a step in the system preferences for internet sharing? Is there another way to get internet to the ps3? I would rather not buy any new equipment, but I'd spend up to $50.

OS X :: Sharing Mac Internet With PS3 Via Linksys Router?

Nov 18, 2009

I've a Macbook, PS3 and Linksys ADSL Gateway that can be put in Bridge Mode.Macbook is connected to the internet via 3G USB modem.I was able to tell Macbook to broadcast it's 3G internet connection via AirPort and use it from any other Machine, such as iPhone.

But the problem here, is that I want can't use it in my PS3, because it's the old 20GB model which doesn't have a wireless connectivity. So, I figured out that I might be able to tell Macbook, to share it's 3G internet connection with the Linksys ADSL gateway while it's out in Bridge Mode, and this gateway can send the internet connection to PS3, all using Ethernet cables, as follows:

Macbook --> Linksys ADSL gateway in Bridge Mode --> PS3

But I couldn't make it work.

This is what I've done so far:

1- I plugged the Ethernet cable from Mac to Linksys ADSL gateway
2- I put Linksys ADSL gateway in Bridge Mode
3- I plugged another Ethernet cable from Linksys ADSL gateway to PS3
4- I went to network preferences in Mac and choose the Manual settings
5- I gave the Mac the IP address: 192.168.1.101, Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0, Router: 192.168.1.1 and DNS: 192.168.1.1
6- I went to to PS3 wired settings and gave it IP: 192.168.1.102, same setting with other fields as Mac Ethernet
7- While testing the connection in PS3, the IP check went successfully, and the internet didn't

Note: I do not want to connect Mac to PS3 directly via a croseeover cable because I want to share the internet connection in mac with Xbox 360 as well, which also doesn't have a Wireless connectivity.
