Hardware :: Extending WiFi Range On My Imac?

Sep 14, 2009

I have the last G5 imac made before Apple went Intel 4 years ago. It works fine. It has wifi.

But heres the deal. I just moved into an apartment in NYC. There are TONS of free wifi hotspots down the block from me that I can pick up on my ipod touch when I go outside. But INSIDE my apartment, my imac is out of range.

I need SPECIFIC advice on what I need to extend the reach of my imac to pic up wifi signals.

Again, these are FREE hotspots, so it's all legal.

Do I need an antenna? Or something else? Or both? What kind and how would I hook it up. How far is the reach? Be detailed, but keep it simple so a laymen can understand it.

OS X :: Extending Wifi Range With Repeaters?

Feb 2, 2010

I got a friend who just moved into one of our apartments at back of our home and I want to extend the range of my wireless router so he can connect his PS3. The only two ideas I have so far was to get an extending phone cable and move the modem as close down the hall of my second floor abode, however I still don't think the signal strength be enough.

So I found out be repeaters and I like an explanation more as to how these works, what model/brand would be easy to configure for mac, cons, etc.

Hardware :: AirPort WDS - Extending Wireless Range?

Aug 24, 2009

I have a linksys wireless system set up in my home right now, but am trying to extend my wireless range to a few more rooms. I have tried to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote and have the linksys as the main station, but it doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know if this is possible (i.e. have the linksys as a main station and Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote)? One a similar note, even after resetting the Airport Extreme Base Station and connecting it directly to the DSL modem, I cannot connect to the internet. The computers connect fine to the wireless network, but the internet will not load.

the setup is a belking wireless router, nas hardwired to the belkin, ae client and wireless laptop all wireless g.

i thought about using the ae as an extender hoping this proble would go away but do I have to tell the laptop which router it would be hooked to if the se is an extender?

Hardware :: Extending Range Of AirpPort Extreme Using Broadband Router

Jan 26, 2010

I have a home network where all devices (various Macbook pros, xbox, ps3, pc's, etc.) connect wirelessly via airport extreme: works great. I am trying to connect an ipod touch from a distance of about 75 feet, and although it will connect, it drops the signal now and again (signal strength goes from 1 bar to no bars). I have this older dell "Wireless 2350 Broadband Router" and I am wondering if I could add this either in a wired or wireless configuration to repeat the base station signal (i.e., to extend the range of the network). I know that I could just run out and buy an airport express to accomplish this, but I'd like to see if I could "recycle" the dell router first. Whatever I do, I don't want to muck up the primary network in the process.

Software :: MBP And USB Antennas For Extended Wifi Range?

May 28, 2006

My internet access is through a fixed point wireless access provider whoe's antenna is about 500 feet from me. The built in Airport card does not provide the reliable connection that a directional, hi gain antenna would.

With my pc laptop I used a Hawking Technologies usb higain wifi nic/antenna that greatly extended my connection range.

When I purchased my MacBook Pro, I ordered a Mac compatable wireless-g usb adapter (HWL2A) from Hawking expecting the same increase in wireless performance. To make a long story short, I found out that "Mac compatable" did not mean "Intel based Mac compatable."

Hardware :: Canon Pixma MP620 - Poor Wifi Range?

Jun 11, 2009

I have just set up a Canon Pixma MP620 to work wirelessly over wifi on my network. The printer works fine when it is right next to the router (a Netgear). However, when I move the printer to another room away from the router, the signal strength goes to nothing/unstable and I cannot print wirelessly. My MacBook retains full wifi signal strength in this same room so the router coverage would appear to be okay.

Is there anyone using this printer over wifi where the printer is in a different room to the access point/router? Is there something wrong with my printer?

OS X :: How To Connect With IMac Wireless Range And New Time Capsule

Oct 7, 2009

I have a 2006 Intel iMac (Running 10.6.1)that is not seeing my wireless routers (D-Link 628 and Time Capsule Dual-channel). The D-Link is downstairs. It is not in the best place, but at my only option. My Macbook Pro sees the D-link fine on the same desk as the iMac. I replaced the D-Link with the Time Capsule and the iMac doesn't even see that. If I bring it close (completely underneath the desk) to the iMac it will see both routers. The weird part is before a hard drive crash and replacement it worked fine (I know, I know something is amiss from the replacement).

I currently use a time capsule for wifi at home. It's located in my basement. The problem is the signal strength on the second floor isn't the greatest. As I understand it, a way to do this would be to go into Disk Utility, shrink the OSX drive, boot into Windows, type in "Disk Management" in the run box, and then click something along the lines of "expand into free space".

Hardware :: Extending An Airport Network?

Dec 24, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme (goes up to N) as my main router, and I'd like to extend my signal with a Linksys router that is a/b/g (no N support) and maybe an a/b/g Airport Express. Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?

Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?

Right Click on Desktop > Properties > Settings > Click on second monitor > Click "Extend Desktop to this device" ...and nothing seems to happen. I've tried changing the resolution, unplugging the monitor and trying again, but I can't get any result.

Hardware :: Extending A Network With Airport Express?

Nov 3, 2010

New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.

My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).

I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.

Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?

Hardware :: Extending Airport Wireless Network Using 2 Different Base Stations

Apr 9, 2009

I recently upgraded my Airport Extreme form the old "UFO looking" Airport to a the new Airport Extreme N and am having trouble extending the network using the older airport as a remote in WDS. I have followed both of the following articles without any success.[URL:...] I followed the 2nd doco (ap2124) up to point 6 and I followed the 1st doco (ap2045) from the start and applied the changes, but my older (ufo looking) airport extreme don't seem to connect to the newer Airport Extreme N. I contacted Apple support and after checking with the product specialist, they advised me that I couldn't mix the 2 devices and I would have to buy the Airport Express N and extend my network using the Express. my question is, has anyone extended their network by using 2 different Airport base stations?

MacBook :: NAT And Xbox 360 - DNS Range

Right now to connect to Xbox live like this
~wireless = ethernet
Actiontec router/modem(verizonfios)~~~~~~ macbook=====xbox360

Right now my NAT is set to moderate and I am trying to open it. I've tried opening ports but there are so many IPs/computers in the network settings I feel like it might be interfering. Another thing is that I manually set my ethernet ip to 10.0.0.1 and my xboxs ip to 10.0.0.2. This is obviously not one of my ISPs IP adresses so should I change it to one that is in the DNS range?
