Jun 29, 2012I just updated to iCloud/Lion and now I can't permanently delete any of my me.com messages. This only happens in the iCloud mailbox. I can permanently delete messages from all of my other email accounts. I will delete a message in the iCloud mailbox and when I go to my inbox, the message is back. I checked my preferences and I have "Move deleted message to the Trash mailbox" selected and "Store deleted messages on the server" not selected.

Apr 18, 2009I ripped a few movies from my personal DVD collection onto my MBP to watch on the road during a recent business trip. When I got home, I went to delete them by putting them in the trash. It worked, or so I thought. The folders containing the movie disappeared from my desktop, but the 6 or 7 gigs of space that they took up were still on my HD (I have the status readout below my HD icon on my desktop and it was unchanged after I trashed the movie). After some research I learned that trashing the file doesn't actually take it off the HD, that I'd have to empty my trash bin to get rid of it permanently. But like many of you, I don't want to completely empty my trash. Is there a way to permanently get rid of individual files/folders? I saw a few ideas. I saw a program called permanent eraser. I also saw where someone suggested using Terminal and some rf commands.

Apr 17, 2012I'm using Mail 4.5 on OS X 10.6.8 - I'm using a late-2008 aluminium unibody MacBook with a 250GB hard drive and I only have 4Gb of available space left. I'm trying to free up space on my hard disk and I downloaded Disk Inventory X to check what was taking up so much space - apart from my iPhoto library and Pictures folder which together account for about 125GB I see that the folder containing Mail messages is 42.8GB in size!
I'm assuming that this is because I've received a lot of photos via email but I've added the ones I wanted to my iPhoto library so I assume I no longer need the images that were emailed to me.
where I can find these email attachments so that I can delete them all at once - I'm hoping that I don't have to go through all my emails one by one to select and delete them individually?

Oct 22, 2007I've set up Mail to use Gmail perfectly, except when I send emails from Mail it won't save them in my sent folder, and it hasn't collected my old sent messages either.
I did a search and found a few people with a similar problem but that seemed to be attributed to the fact that they were accessing IMAP accounts. Anyone know what the problem could be with Gmail?
The only instruction I didn't follow in the instructions was that I told Gmail to keep copies of my emails in its inbox rather than archive them.

I like to keep all of my gmail messages because it's a useful history to search if I ever need to look up an old thread. However, the obvious problem is a hacker who gets in also has all that knowledge. What I'd like to be able to do is store my full Gmail account with all messages locally in Apple mail where I can backup as often as I want, then I'd like to purge my online Gmail messages. The idea is if someone hacked my Gmail account, they'd see very little messages but I would still have all e-mail copies saved on my machine.

Jul 21, 2010I had a hotmail account and about a month ago apple mail deleted all my messages from the hotmail account, therefore I am unable to access any of them from anywhere else except my mac.
I learned that that was due to me leaving the box "remove copy from server after retrieving a message." Now I fixed that and moved to gmail, as I was able to upload all hotmail messages to my gmail account through tuhunderbird.
Since I am not a big fan of Thunderbird as it is giving me some password issues, today I set up the gmail imap (I think) accunt on my apple mail, but there is no box "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" for gmail in prefrences, just for hotmail.
Now I am scared, will apple mail delete all my messages from the gmail server, and if it will, how do I prevent it from doing so?

I was trying to reduce size of my Mail.app for very long time and nothing works correctly.
Ideal situation would be something like this:
E-mails older than 2 months will automatically delete from Mail.app but not from server. Or it doesn't have to be automatic, but I have to keep them on gmail.com. I'm not sure if it is possible with IMAP.

Oct 17, 2009I am currently using a Gmail IMAP setup in Mail.app. Everything is working great, and with a Gmail Labs feature called Advanced IMAP Settings, I have hidden all of the main Gmail folders, like All Mail and Starred. I've already integrated folders like Sent and Trash with Mail.app's mailboxes.
Because of these, the [Gmail] folder in my account is completely empty. I now wish to remove it from the sidebar, since I don't need it there. How can I accomplish this?

Mar 28, 2010I have had a Gmail IMAP account sync with Mail without problems for over a year. I almost never actually log into Gmail in a browser anymore because Mail works just fine.
The other day I was away from my computer so I logged in via a browser and saw that about a month ago, Gmail stopped saving sent messages in the sent section.
Those messages are still in my Mail folder, but never got sent to the server or not saved. I never changed any configurations.
Is there some way to manually "push" those messages to keep things in sync?
I have checked my settings, everything is normal.

May 29, 2012I have a folder under my Gmail account marked "All Mail" which currently has over 10,000 messages that I would like to delete. I am using the Apple email program. I am able to delete them only to have them return when I reboot my computer. I am concerned that these ever growing messsages will slow down my computer.
