I am brand new to the Mac ecosystem. Having loved my iPhones for the past two years, I have been wanting more Apple. I purchased the Mac mini. Thus far, I love it, but there is a lot to learn since I have been living in Windows/Microsoft my entire life. I am currently in the process of exploring and setting up my Mac mini, and, for some reason, iTunes decided to duplicate portions of my library. I'm not sure why, as there is no rhyme or reason to the particular files that were duplicated; either way, I think I have that issue under control. Â
However, when I tried to delete some of the duplicate files from the directory with the delete keys, nothing happened. With some research, I discovered that Command-delete was the necessary keystroke. It still did not work because I was trying to use the delete key next to the end key; I then tried the 'backspace' delete key, and that did the trick. what the difference is between these two seemingly identical keys.

I have tried everything and I cannot delete this folder from my trash. It's an empty folder because everything inside it is already deleted. I get this message when I try to empty trash.
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "xxx" is in use."
I have tried going into Terminal and typing "sudo rm -rf" etc etc. Get the message "directory not empty".
Tried secure empty trash.
Tried using Cocktail.
Tried using Permanent Eraser.
Tried holding down "option" and emptying.
Tried logging out, logging in then emptying. Tried restarting and emptying.
Nothing seems to work. I've looked through every thread on every forum I could find on google. I can move the folder back to my desktop. I can rename it. It's not locked or anything. Also, I tried emptying it in safe mode, but I can't seem to start up on safe mode!!! I turn off the computer, turn it on, hold down shift after I hear the startup noise, release shift when the grey apple logo comes up, and then it just shuts down on me. I can't boot up on safe mode!! It's so weird!
I'm gonna try repairing disk permissions, but before I do.
I'm on a PowerBook G4. Running Version 10.4.11. Everything is up to date.

So, while cleaning up my macbook pro from old files, I mistakenly get into the NO NAME partition that appears in the OS X partition, but which holds some kind of Windows XP directories. I don't know how I managed to do so, but I somehow deleted a folder under NO NAME/Documents and Settings/[user name] and all the files in that directory.
Not much harm was done, since it seems as though the folder was merely duplicated into the trash and still remains in its original directory in NO NAME. The problem is that every time I try to delete it from the trash it says I don't have permissions. It's only folders and they're all unlocked and I am logged on as admin. I've tried dragging the folder out of the trash but it merely duplicates it (although I have no issues deleting the duplicate). So I have folders that have no use being in or outside the trash, which are proving to be very difficult to delete. I tried verifying my disk fwith Disk Utility, but it resulted ok.

When I try to delete my email messages a pop down box shows up on the screen telling me that "The message (whatever one it may be) could not be moved to the mailbox 'Deleted message-mail.comcast.net does not allow messages to be moved to it.Â
Is it possible for me to have deleted the original trash box from the left hand column of the mail page? And that is why these email message cannot be delelted?
I have been given all kinds of sites to go to in hopes of correcting this problem but none of them has been the one that works to correct it for me I have over 45,000 messages that I need to get rid of and I just can't figure out how to get them to move to the trash file or folder and it doesn't work.

I have a MacBook Air with 256 GB of SSD and am running very close to the limit of available memory. To recover additional memory I issued an empty trash command while holding down the options key. The process has been underway for a few hours now.Â
There are over 1,238,000 items to be deleted. Items are being deleted at the rate of about one every five seconds. At that rate it is going to take forever for the process to finish. Â
Is there any way to speed up the process? Or an alternative the empty trash command?Â

I made a clean install of lion as i had a little bit of a problems after few years i was uning my iMac.. All of the issues were gone but know i got a new problem with the trash .. Â
Every time i delete something (i.e: a folder that i dont need any more) i requires a password.. Then instead of that folder to appear in the Trash (as it should be), it is automatically gone and do not appear in the trash! what is this but i am suspicious that is the password protection thing that is responsible for that!

I'm in Mail and my trash has about 80 deleted messages. I cannot figure out how to do a mass delete. Please don't tell me this has to be done one delete at a time. I've tried a few key strokes and mouse/key combinations, but obviously not the right ones. Now, this is not in MAILBOXES, where a right click and Erase Deleted Items does the job. This is under my 'GMAIL' box, which is linked to MAIL. I can right click--erase deleted items there until I am blue in the face to no avail.

I have a MacBook with Yosemite. No matter what I set in mail preferences, my trash is only saved for seven days. I can set it to a month or never but it always deletes after seven days. Is there a conflict with the settings for my Mail when I use iCloud on the web?I've got that set for a month. For some reason it doesn't have the same choices as Mac mail.

I've been a Mac user for a few years now but I was reluctant to update to Mavericks because whenever I hadn't done a clean install my macbook would become very slow and unstable, so I was using Lion until I bought a new Macbook.
Before, whenever I wanted to delete an app I'd open the Application folder on the Dock and drag it straight to the trash from there. In Mavericks, however, when I try to do that the app just stays there, and I have to open the application folder on Finder to be able to drag it (and it prompts me for my password). Is there a way I could go back to deleting them right from the App folder in the dock (and not having to type my password every time)?Â

When I open Mail it syncs all the messages like it should and then I go thrrough and delete all the junk emails and inbox emails that arent important. They go to the Trash folder and when I click "erase them permanently" they disappear, but then the Trash folder starts filling up with more emails and adds up to 400 every 10 seconds until around 2000. No matter how many times I select them all and click delete it just fills up again.

I have much of the junk emails that come to me auto set to go to the Trash folder through Junk Filter settings. However, when I do a Command>A, to choose all the email in the Trash folder, and then click on Delete, the junk emails I never opened don't delete until I do it again or click on each one and then click Delete. All the other emails I moved there manually will disappear using the Command>A and Delete, just not those that went there by filter rules I set up.

Since installing Mavericks I have found that lots of basic tasks have become a bit difficult.Â
One such frustrating example of this is whenever I go to empty my trash folder in Mail it crashes. If I select it through the menu (ie. <Mailbox> <Erase Deleted Items> <In All Accounts>) it works fine but I like to do a quick check before emptying the trash and that seems to cause my Mac to implode into a processing black-hole of burning lava (it gets hot until I <Force Quit>).Â

I'm having a new problem with Mail in Mavericks that seems to have just started around a month ago. When I have emails in the trash in Mail and choose Erase Deleted Items to empty the trash it seems to fully delete them all within the Mail app. But as I just discovered yesterday by going to the gmail website (for the first time in awhile) they are apparently not being deleted from the server. The emails are properly being moved into trash within gmail but when emptying trash in Mail they do not empty within gmail.Â
As I said, this is a recent problem that never happened with Mavericks Mail for me before a month ago. I just updated to 10.9.4 today and its still happening. Â

I have a new mailbox folder that has added itself to my Mac Mail. It does not exist on my server, only in Mac Mail and on my iPhone. I've attempted to delete it manually both while in Mac Mail and through the system library (~/Library/Mail/SmartMailboxes.plist) as I was told it could be a corrupted file. I have Mac-keeper but it is showing no viruses. How can I delete this thing?

Somehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too. Â
How to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?Â
I'm using Mavericks 10.9 on a MacBookPro with a 2T Seagate backup drive.

I have a folder under my Gmail account marked "All Mail" which currently has over 10,000 messages that I would like to delete. I am using the Apple email program. I am able to delete them only to have them return when I reboot my computer. I am concerned that these ever growing messsages will slow down my computer. I have worked with my internet provider, Apple tech, and gmail and no one seems to have an answer. They do not show up with I access my gmail account through the web.Â

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.
