Is a usb keyboard needed to switch between OS X and Windows in bootcamp when holding down the option key, or should the Apple bluetooth wireless keyboard work as well?

I have no problem using my wired keyboard to boot into Windows using boot camp. but when I use the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, holding down the option button when powering up does not work. Anyone else have this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI believe the Macs at my college allow the user to select from either Mac OSX or Windows at startup. However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.

I have to hold the option button to manually select the windows partition and then load into windows. Some setting somewhere must be lost. Does anyone know how to restore it?

I mainly use Snow Leopard.
Both OS are working fine until I restart my mac in Snow Leopard yesterday.
After starting song appeared and it directly go to Windows 7.
I pressed Option (Alt) key and chose Snow Leopard but it still go into Windows.
I even changed boot option in Windows > Control Panel > Boot Camp Option to OSX but it doesn't work.
At the moment I have Windows 7 32 bit OS. I've always wanted either an iMac, or atleast the Mac OS. I've recently found out it's only £20.99, and i've always thought it was a lot more than that, which is a bargain! The only thing which is stopping me from buying it at the moment, is that certain programs which I use reguarlarly won't work on Mac, and I really need those programs. Is their anyway I could dual-boot it with Windows 7, so I give Windows 7 say only 8gb of my hard drive, and Mac the rest?

I recently got a new hard drive and I want to install Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows XP on it.
Is it possible to format one partition with the Mac GUID for OS X and the other partition as a Master Record for Windows XP?
Or does Mac OS X/Windows XP dual-booting has to be done through the bootcamp?
I plan on purchasing a Mac Mini server in the upcoming months and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows on it when I need to. However the Mac OS Server (as far as I can tell) doesn't come with the Boot camp utility. So here's my conundrum: Do I ignore the server version of Mac and install Snow Leopard client with boot camp assistant or do I just use Disc Utility to create a second partition on one of the Mini drives and install Windows like any other computer? and keep using the server version of Snow Leopard?
I guess what I;m asking is which of these is the better option?
Installing Client and using Boot Camp Utility?
Or Creating a Partition manually and installing Windows on that?
(would my second option even work and would installing boot camp drivers after that process do any good or would it just bunk the Windows install?)
By using boot camp, I finally managed to install XP on my Macbook Pro. I can extend the monitor but the problem is that the extended monitor is in Black&WHite and totally jagged/off centered. I tested the adater and the cable with other machine and they work fine, so definitely issue is not the cable and the adapter. I really need to use Dual monitor for some software that I use on XP, so this is really really important to me.... My MacbookPro is 2.16ghz with 2GB of RAM, and the video card is ATI Radeon X1600. Maybe I need to install different driver for the card? If anyone has done the same please please let me know exactly how you did it
View 18 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel Macbook with 10.4.11 running, and I wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I've heard that the $29 upgrade disc will work with 10.4, and I have a couple questions.
1. I lost the original 10.4 install disc that came with my computer - would that be a problem?
2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?
I am a complete n00b when it comes to OSX just to warn you lol. Im just wondering, if one did a dual boot of windows alongside OSX, is it possible to access those files on the windows partition from OSX and likewise, is it possible to access those files on the OSX partition from wndows? Also, will Time Capsule only back up files from OSX or from across the whole mac? Sorry if this is a stupid question, as I am looking into buying a macbook and was wondering if this is possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's time for me to look into serious back up solutions for a Mac Pro dual boot. I had good backup solutions in the past, but this set up is different. I now have two Mac drives (system and storage), the Windows partition on Mac system drive, and one Windows storage drive (total 3 physical, 4 virtual). Physical system drive is 240GB split down the middle. Mac storage drive is 1TB, and XP storage drive is 500MB. I keep reading about robotic backup systems like Drobo, but I'm wondering what the advantages are over simply getting matched drives and mirroring them. (Other than the fact that I don't have to worry about drive sizes I mean).
It seems to me the big selling point on these gadgets is the "set it and forget it" aspect. I've used mirrored drives in the past, and don't recall ever having to pay any attention to them, no extra software settings. Share them, don't share them, whatever. That, and they update on the fly. Every time I write to the primary drive, the redundant drive is instantly updated to match it. What am I not getting? These "robotic" backups just seem to me to be nothing more than SATA drive racks with a lot of blinking lights I don't really need (I pay attention to my storage capacity. I know when it's getting full long before the lights come on), and software that does stuff the system can already do.
I've bought my 13" MBP (love it) but need to dual boot to run some programs, so I bought the Windows 7 Prof 64bit Upgrade. Now... because it's the upgrade version do I need to have a previous version of a Windows OS installed before I can upgrade or can I install straight away? Another question, at some point I'm tempted to upgrade to the 500gb Momentus XT. Will my Windows 7 disk be okay for multiple installs?

A while back there was a thread on Archive and install " Cant find it on a search " but anyways. I'd like to do a clean install of the OS and bring over the applications needed, WHY? to me the system seems to be getting bogged down , mite be me also. Question is, is that I have dual boot installed to windows for gaming. Is the new install going to hose that? and would I have to reinstall bootcamp and the whole windows thing again? I was also thinking maybe some program that would go through and clean out old unnecessary files, but that's the old windows in me coming out from years past.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs far as I understand there is a bug that stops Windows 7 or Vista from showing up in the Start Up disk options in the preference settings.
So the only option is to go through the boot menu selection but unfortunately I am using the Apple wireless keyboard and holding the option key down doesn't bring up the boot selection screen. Is there anything I can do ... or am I forced to use a USB keyboard for now ?
For the record I have the Wireless Keyboard and Mighty mouse paired and working in Windows 7 ( The keyboard has occasional lag from the first keystroke input but is fine from then ) Its just that I get no response from keystrokes during boot up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLast week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly. It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there. However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore? Holding down the Option key is getting old.

I'm asking this question for my brother. He has a 15-inch MacBook Pro (late 2011). He recently reinstalled OS X Lion but now every time he boots his computer he ALWAYS gets the option to chose Macintosh HD or Lion Recovery disk. I'm tech savy but I've tried resetting the PRAM and everything else I culd think of but he still gets that same screen. He is not pressing the option key when booting it just does it automaticlly. Should I do reinstall OS X Lion aain for him or just take it back to Apple and have them look at it?

I have a bit of an odd situation. I purchased a Microsoft Digital Media Pro 3000 keyboard today (great boxing day sale for $14.00!) and noticed that in System Preferences I now have an option for Ink - this wasn't there before and it disappears as soon as I unplug the keyboard, does anyone know why this happens?
View 13 Replies View RelatedIn my attempt to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I accidentally inserted an SP1 disc instead of the SP2 disc that I have. The installation proceeded to the point where it does for most who attempt this: the screen where you are prompted to press ENTER. I could not proceed and therefore restarted the iMac and held down the mouse button upon start-up to remove the CD.
HERE IS THE PROBLEM:I can not boot into OS X because the keyboard shortcuts (those that might allow me to select which partition to boot from and/or reset PRAM) seem to be disabled. Instead, a reboot always ends at a black screen with a blinking DOS-esque cursor, or the prompt: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key."
I have attempted inserting my SP2 disc at this point, to no avail. My keyboard seems to be disabled, as if the SP1 install proceeded just enough to establish itself as the boot drive without drivers for the keyboard. I've tried using all 3 USB ports, disconnecting other USB devices. Oddly, my bluetooth mouse works to eject the CD on reboot...
Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut for 'I'm feeling lucky' on google because clicking it just takes too much time.

Is there a way of removing one of these options permanently, in my case remove the U.S. option?
Is there no external power option for a MacBook pro 17 with dual core. Apparently apple doesn't offer one and I can't ind any who does

I've used the bootcamp assistant to create a 200 GB partition for Windows. I installled windows 7 x64 on this partition, everything is going well so far. I'm able to press the option key after installation and run windows and perform some updates (note, I couldn't install the required software IN windows from the snow leopard disk, let's hope this is not the source of my problem).
Everything went well so I booted back to OSX and I noticed that I needed some more partitions, so I've split my Macintosh HD further into a Media and a School partition. I didn't touch the windows partition though.
After experiencing (before) with hackintosh computers I know that i have to rewrite the boot configuration of the harddrive. Because now I'm not seeing the Windows HD anymore while holding the option key at startup and therefore unable to boot into Windows anymore. Even parallels can't discover the Windows partition.
I've tried repairing permissions, and nothing. I've tried to use the repair option on the Windows 7 disk which states it can't be done.
What can I do? Do I have to repartition it again in an different order (bootcamp states that it can only create a Windows partition if there's only 1 partition in the harddrive, so it's logical to repartition the drive after bootcamp created the Windows HD or even after the installation of Windows itself). Perhaps I need to rewrite the boot config of the mac, which I don't have a clue about.
Being 64 bit windows is not an issue, because it worked at first (before repartitioning)
Anyone else had trouble option booting with a 2010 Mac Pro? Can't get to startup manager. All I get is a blank screen. Apple says it must be a hardware problem after having me test everything else. Keyboard checks out. Can boot from install disk holding C key, but cannot change startup disk with prefs to install dvd or to a cloned drive. Have reinstalled SL 10.6.4 from install disk. Zapped pram and unplugged power, held power button 5-10 secs. and plugged in again - to reset computer according to apple tech.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright I was going to load Windows on a partition thru Boot Camp. However I decided not to and then used the Boot Camp assistant to remove the Windows partition.
Ever since I got rid of the Windows partition, I've have to hold the OPTION key just to get my MBP to boot even though there is NO other operating system installed on the old partition. If I don't hold the OPTION key it won't boot, it just goes to a black screen.
I'm new to mac's and don't know what to do.
