I scanned the posts and didn't see this question, but honestly I didn't read all 20K + messages.I bought in late 2005 a dual 2.3 G5, about 6 months before the Mac/Windows combination came out. Does anyone know if I can upgrade or is it too costly to do so compared to buying a new machine.

Mac Pro :: Upgrade Base Dual 2.4GHz Quad Core To Dual 2.93GHz Hex Core

Oct 3, 2010

I'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:

Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?

Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?

Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?

PowerPC :: Power Mac Dual G5 Versus Mac Mini Core 2 Duo

Feb 15, 2008

I am looking to get another mac to do some basic video editing and encoding. All the editing is going to be done in the mpeg4 format and once the video has been edited I am going to encode the video into H.264. My question is which will be better A Power Mac Dual 1.8Ghz G5 or a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo?

I am looking for stable set up that can handle encoding video for a few hours at a time. I am leaning towards the Power Mac Dual G5 because of how much more cooling it has however that said a Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 Ghz would also probabley work well.

MacBook Pro :: Quad Core Versus Dual Core?

Jan 8, 2011

Just in case Apple surprise us with a Sandybridge Quad core, and even if they don't I was wondering the following.

1 ) During sustained use in 3D gaming does a Quadcore with lower clock speeds beat a dual core with higher clock speeds.

2) Can the quoted turbo speeds be achieved in sustained use (ie 3D gaming where maximal load can be applied for a couple of hours).

Put More Than 4gb Of Memory On A Dual Core MacBook?

Anyone try to put more than 4gb of memory on a dual core MacBook? Do you have to have the same amount of memory in each slot? I've only got 2gb and am running Lion, which slows everything down.I got a 2gb and 4 gb from OWC but the folks at the Genius Bar tell me that the MacBook ishould have no more than 4gb and that the memory slots need to be equal.

Mac Pro :: Quad Core Versus Dual 6 Core?

Jun 8, 2010

So I was talking to my friend about the new MPs and that they should have two 6 core processors in it.

I plan on getting one for rendering scenes with Maya and doing stuff on AE, FCP, and the CS5 master collection. We were talking about his computer, which is one quad core processor.

He was saying that render times on Maya wouldn't be very different when comparing a quad core versus two hexa cores. I don't agree with him but would like someone elses opinion on this.

MacBook :: Lack Of RAM - Dual Core Processor - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

Nov 26, 2010

With the Introduction of Civilization V for the Mac and its huge need for power. Now i'm not gonna attempt to try to play this game. But I downloaded Ship Simulator Extreme on my windows partition. Now on Steam it has the system requirements.

OS: Windows XP (Min. service pack 2), Windows Vista or Windows 7. 32 and 64 bits OS supported
Processor: 3 Ghz P4 Intel or AMD equivalent processor
Memory: 2GB (Windows XP) or 3GB (Vista or Windows 7)
Hard Disk Space: 3.5 GB
Video Card: Geforce 8800GT or ATI Radeon 4850 with 256MB ram (At least Shader model 3.0)
Sound: DirectX compatible
DirectX: 9.0c

I have a MacBook Aluminium, Intel Core 2 Due 2.0GHz with 2GB Ram and NVIDIA 9400M. The game plays incredibly slowly and keeps jumping, like the refresh rate is so slow. I have downloaded the latest driver from NVIDIA but still it plays slow. Is my problem here the lack of RAM and I have a dual core processor which is above the requirements? I thought the good video card and processor would be enough? A lot of games seem to have minimum requirements much more than my mac, its not ever that old and seems outdated already.

OS X :: Macbook With Broken Screen Wont Boot - Using Option Key On Power Up

Jan 19, 2010

Long time lurker, first time I couldn't find a fix without asking so here it goes... I'll try not to leave anything out... Btw way the screen is broke but i use it with an lcd tv. Was working in final cut this morning when suddenly the app froze. No big deal I'll just force quit and restart... Hit enter on the force quit dialogue and the app disappears. Cool.BUT, its hanging in purgatory in the dock, thinking its still "active" or whatever with the little highlight, but clearly states that is "not responding" when right-clicked. Command-opt-esc doesnt show final cut in the applications list when pressed again... AND, Illustrator and photoshop are also now not responding, and begin acting the same way in the dock. Weird right? Ok whatever so I'll just shut down and fire her back up, I think. Apple menu/shutdown shows the yes/no dialogue to shutdown but when i hit okay it does not shutdown. the top apple menu bar disappears as does all files/folders/images on the desktop, but the desktop background remains. i figured it was just taking a sec longer than usual so i walked out of the room, but when i came back it was the same. after REALLY trying to NOT press the power button to shut it off, I finally broke down and did. Now the tv isnt getting the signal from the mac on restart. After much searching (probably here) I found that if I power up the mac and then immediately close the lid it forces the connected display into primary. Again, cool. BUT, I get the blinking question mark folder. I somehow managed to pull the above trick and hit the option key which brought me to what I thought would be an empty startup disk screen. Alas, Macintosh HD is right there. But, when I choose that drive, which is the only thing showing, it goes back to a blank grey screen and never boots. Any ideas? I can get all my data via target disk on my imac, and it appears the drive is functioning fine when i use disk utility when viewing as a firewire drive on the imac.

OS X :: Dual Display - Power Down And Disconnect The External Display

Oct 26, 2008

I have a question about using dual displays with my new macbook. The basic issue is this:

1: plug in second display and setup dual monitor support to use the external hi-res display and the macbook's display (no problem here).

2: drag windows to the external display and resize to use (no problems here either).

3. Power down and disconnect the external display.

4. Start up the macbook without the external display and try and open up a program that I was using previously on the external display. The problem is that it is resized and positioned for the external display and is now off the screen of my macbook display and I can't directly get to the title bar to move it or the resize corner to resize it.

OS X :: Power Mac Dual G5 Dual Video Cards

Nov 2, 2009

I have a Powermac Dual G5 @2.0ghz, with 8gbs of ram, and 2 1tb drives running the latest version of 10.5. The problem I have is that I have 4 LCD monitors that I was using with my PC. I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. Please help, I cant go on using this awesome machine with only one 19inch LCD. and I cant afford to buy new monitors

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive Is An Option?

Jun 29, 2012

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what the approximate costs would be to upgrade the hard drive in my mid-2009 macbook pro. I have a 160 GB hard drive and it is nearly full, but I am a bit of a photo enthusiast and now must labouriously find things to delete before adding new photos.

I know that an external hard drive is an option, although I'm not sure how it would work for me since almost all of my memory is eaten by photos and music, and I very much like having all of this media on the machine together in my iphoto and itunes libraries. I have no sense of what this would cost. Needless to say, I would bring my machine into apple to upgrade given that I'm not knowledgeable enough to even consider opening it myself.

I am willing to consider a new macbook, but this seems excessive given that I am generally happy with the machine and it has only slowed slightly since purcahse, and mostly in the recent months as it has teetered dangerously close to completely full.
