Windows On Mac :: Safari 5 - Less HTML 5 Support?
Sep 19, 2010
Is it me or Safari 5 on Windows has no support for the <video> element? I did an HTML 5 test on this page [URL:..] and it scored 165 but it scored none in video. I tried Vimeo on HTML 5 and videos wont play. Is it simply disabled? If it is where can I enable it?

Rather than waiting for Microsoft to implement HTML 5, Google has released a plugin for Internet Explorer 8 that injects its own WebKit rendering engine, resulting in a ten fold performance boost for JavaScript. A report by Gregg Keizer in Computerworld said that installing Google's plugin resulted in an average speed improvement that was 9.6 times faster than IE 8 alone, based on SunSpider JavaScript benchmarks. Google recommends the new IE plugin, called Chrome Frame, to any users who aren't able to install an alternative browser. With the plugin installed, IE's own Trident rendering engine continues to render web pages until it either encounters HTML 5 or is manually prompted by the user to render like the native Chrome browser. In addition to being much faster at executing JavaScript, Chrome Frame's WebKit rendering engine also provides IE with support for new HTML 5 features, which are required to run an emerging crop of advanced web applications. WebKit also powers Apple's Safari browser and the mobile version of Safari used on the iPhone and iPod touch. One example of an advanced HTML 5 web app is Google Wave, a collaboration toolkit for building dynamic browser apps that enable rich communication features between users. Google Wave invites IE users to download the Chrome Frame plugin, or alternatively download a browser than can render HTML 5 natively, including the full version of Chrome, Safari 4, or Firefox 4.......

I need some helping doing some (hopefully) simple HTML editing on my customized Google homepage. Basically, what I'm looking to do is shorten the width of the search bar as shown in the attached screenshot. As far as right-clicking "Inspect Element" on the search bar itself, I'm totally lost as to what to put in the editing window that appears and where/how to do it.

I'm wondering why some websites when turned to the "Reader" option in Safari, some html characteristics are missing. One that I noticed was the <hr> tag that creates an horizontal line across an html page. Is that a normal thing for Reader to do? Can it be forced to display that somehow?Â

replace flash as the default. apple has had a special arrangement with Google from the iPhones inception to link mobile Safari directly to youtubes HTML site, do you think this is a possibility on the mac, obviously not to ban flash(the government wouldn't approve of that) but to replace it as the default?

1 - I have an early 2008 iMac 24" and ordered Snow Leopard disc from Apple
2 - After installation of Win7 64 bit and problems with boot camp 3.1 drivers support then tells me my computer will not run windows 7 64 bit and sends me a list of non-compatibles. Sure enough mine is one.
3 - Several respondents help me and it appears that 64 bit will run but still trouble with keyboard/mouse.4 - uninstall 64 bit and install 32 bit and related boot camp drivers5 - numeric keypad on apple keyboard still does not work with office 20106 - just tried to update drivers for win 32 but it says more current ones are installed??? I guess that is from the attempt to install 3.1 for win 64 unsuccessfully?7 - Now support lists computers that will not run windows 7 and mine is not on that list.
right now i'd be a happy camper if someone could just tell me how to get the Apple keyboard that came with my iMac and the numeric keypad working when in Windows or Office.

I'm new to Mac's and was going to fill out a form on a bank site. The site wouldn't let me because my browser wasn't secure enough. Are they planning on updating the browser to support this kind of encryption? What do you guys do when you run into this? Install Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac's?

I've been having problems with Safari 4 since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Any page that displays HTML source code in a standard page jumbled up. It is not rendering the page correctly, although if I copy the scrambled text to another program it displays correctly. This only effects Safari and other browsers are okay. Does anyone have a suggestion how I can reinstall safari / reset?? The screenshots above are from a Joomla Edit HTML page but this also happens on other pages such as where they show sample HTML code tutorials.

I am farily new to macs in general and am confused about one thing. In windows, you can always update the browser regardless of your windows version. OS X 10.2.8 is not all that old but I cannot update safari to 2.0.4 like in 10.4.7. Is support for 10.2.8 discontinued? Am I forced to use firefox if I want an up to date browser? BTW, this is on an old Beige G3 so 10.2.8 is the highest OS.

Well, Safari was acting up and being super slow, so I decided I'd try to see what happens when I turn Flash off. Well, the internet flys now. It seems SOO much faster. Its no wonder Apple doesn't support it. I really like how fast everything is now. Anyways, the point of this thread is: 1) Apple is smart to not support Flash 2) Try disabling Flash in Safari, it makes the internet so much faster.

I am trying to transition my father to OSX on a new iMac. I've tried several times to get him to commit to getting Internet but he is just not going to. However it would be useful to get the tutorial videos on Apple's Support pages for him to follow as he learns, iWork in particular, but other tasks as well. I've shown them to him in the AppleStore and he seems to like them as a method of instruction. Apple however has changed its method of streaming the video, I can't download them anymore using QuickTime and you can't access them via the Safari > Activity menu either. Why Apple is making it hard to get something they seem to want us to have, seems strange to me. How do you download the tutorials? I'd like to put them on a Flassh Drive for Dad to use at home.Â

Since updating Safari recently to 5.1.5, if I choose the Mail Link to This Page command, instead of opening Mail.app with a new email with the link pasted in, it launches Google Chrome and, in Chrome, goes to the email login page for Google webmail. If I choose the Mail Contents of This Page command, I get an error message stating: "Safari can't create an email message because Google Chrome.app doesn't support sending webpages from Safari. You can use the Mail application included with Mac OS X to send webpages." Safari is set as my default browser. This behavior started immediately after the 5.1.5 update.I use these commands pretty regularly and, through many version of mail.app and Safari, there has never been a glitch. Any ideas, folks? Or is this a bug introduced by 5.1.5 or some other recent Software Update? (Software updates are completely up to date and on 10.7.3.)

I see that Apple has announced a new Mac Pro RAID card, the price has dropped to $700. It still only supports OS X, no windows driver. The bandwidth limitation of 320MB/sec seems to have increased to over 500MB/sec. Anyone know if this compatible with older Mac Pros? Is the previous card discontinued? Apple is not even offering the SAS drives when configuring a Mac Pro to buy as shown in the benchmark configuration performance example.

I recently got a third hard drive for my Mac Pro and decided to install windows on it using Boot Camp. I formatted the drive ntfs and installed windows. After the installation was complete I inserted the leopard disk as I was instructed to do so and installed the Apple Drivers.
It seems a Realtek Audio HD driver was installed. This allows sound to come from the internal speaker, but as far as I can windows is not recognizing the line-out jack when I am in windows. (The one on the back of the Mac Pro) I can plug my speakers into the headphone jack (on the front) and they will work or I can use an external USB soundcard, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the speakers to work via the line out.
I have tried reinstalling the realtek drivers several times. All this seems to do is reinstall that darn Audio Manager which allows me to put useless "reverb" effects on. Or listen to a bee buzzing around my head. Is there anyway to get the line out to work under boot camp? Preferably a way that doesn't require me to install the Realtek Audio manager. (Which is totally useless.)
Right now I have the drivers uninstalled. Since all they did in the first place was make the internal speaker work, I'm fine without them until I can figure out how to get the line out to work. The only downside is the machine yells at me on startup that the integrated card has no driver. Are there any know drivers that support the line out? And again, if I can avoid the Audio Manager being installed as well, that would be great.

Setting aside the temporary lack of support for Windows 7, I was wondering which I should install. I have a few older titles/games that I would like to use/play from time to time. All of them were designed for XP. I'm sure Windows 7 will more than likely run them fine, but is it really my best option?I'm not planning to invest in any additional Windows software (at least that's the current plan). The cost is the same so I'm asking for opinions and comments from others.

So I have a MacBook 4,1 with Windows 7 32bit installed via bootcamp. I would install 64bit however at the current time the drivers don't exist for older Macbooks for Windows 7. Anyways, I have 4GB of RAM installed and as most are aware, 32bit Windows only recognizes like 3.5GB or RAM. For some reason my Windows 7 tells me I only have 3.0GB... but that is beside the point. I want 4GB useable. Back when I had Windows XP installed, I remember enabling PAE support to allow for using 4GB... however I don't remember how I did it and I'm also sure it's a bit different in Windows 7. So long story short, anyone know how to enable PAE in Windows 7 so I can utilize 4GB of RAM? Also I've heard there are some issues even if you can get this working.
