I'm aware that with windows computers you need to defragment regularly to keep processes running top notch. However, I read that the macbook runs on fragmentation, thus, defragging is not necessary.
However, I saw in another thread that defragging is also important for a macbook. My question is:
1. Is it necessary to defragment?
2. If so, what is a good program for defragmenting on a macbook?
My macbook pro came installed with 4GB of RAM but this is slowly being eaten away. Brand new there was 2.77Gb available. Yesterday there was 2.4 and today there is 1.43Gb free. ( I know this as I am using free memory) Nothing is running but Finder and now this browser. Without the browser (Safari) I cannot seem to get more than 1.7Gb free. Something seemnd s to be gobbling up about 1Gb in the background this is not visible to Finder/Force quit

I'm interested in seeing how many of the people that own a unibody Macbook Pro switch graphic cards on a regular basis. I know when the unibody Macbook Pros came out people were complaining that switching graphics cards required logging out. Is this still an issue or do most people stick with one? I just switched to the 9600M after being on the 9400M for about two months as I needed the extra power and battery life wasn't an issue.

I have tired to hard boot but all i hear is sound of machine booting up and shutting down. Â Is there ant possible way I can get my display back on my machine? When i close the lid, the indictor light is blinking slowly but as soon as i open the lid cover screen is always black. For last 5Â days I have tired to discharge the battery and charge again, attached a wired mouse to see if it might wake up my machine but with no luck. Â

View 7 Replies View RelatedNoticed with a Win7 bootcamp install the SSD is not detected and scheduled disk defragmentation would best be turned off manually. You may also want to turn off hibernation to save from 2-4GB of disc space. A full install of Win7 takes about 10GB and runs excellent.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook pro mid 2010 model running OS X Lion 10.7.4 with 8GB of RAM (3rd party upgrade), 128 SSD. Up until about 3 weeks ago everything was running fine. Then one day the mac just froze and it's been doing it ever since on an irregular basis. Some days it will happen 10 times in one day, then it won't happen for 3 days. Symptoms:- The mac will freeze completely, no mouse, trackpad or keyboard input, if itunes is playing a song it will just hang and repeat last 1/2 second of the song like a broken record. The only way out of this state is to do a hard reset. ocasionally I get some screen on startup that says I must hold down the power button to restart. It says this in about 5 different languages. Occasionally starting up the mac gets to the grey screen then doesn't move. Again I must do a hard reset.Â
Attempted Fixes: Booting up in safe mode does not fix the issue. It sometimes freezes in safe mode, or gets stuck on the grey screen. Apple Hardware Test - No issues found after running 3 times in extended mode. Verified/Repaired disks - Problem remains. Restored from a time machine backup. I didn't expect this to fix it, and it didn't.Â

I defraged my hard drive with Tech Tool and when doing the reboot, the G5 powers back on, the grey apple shows up then the screen goes to a blue background with just the mouse pointer showing.

Are there any programs that clear out a mac for what I used to use in windows, like the temp folder, unused programs, caches, cookies, etc. For some reason my mac has been acting a lot slower with the color pinwheel of lag coming in more and more, I only got it in October and i rarely have more than four programs open at a time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI like being able to use the F-Keys on my keyboard to perform the assigned special features printed on each key (brightness +/-; Spaces; Expose; iTunes Playback Controls; etc) without having to press the 'Fn' modifier key to do so.However, when I work in Photoshop, I've always used the F-keys to run Actions and to execute menu items, and having to tack on the 'Fn' key to do so is a series buzz kill (especially when you consider I already use multiple modifier keys along with the F-keys in Photoshop - for example Shift+Cmd+F2 might do something like add a Hue/Saturation Layer... when you complicate an already complicated shortcut by making it Fn+Shift+Cmd+F2, the shortcut basically becomes to complex to use in real life...Anyone know of a third party System Preference Pane 'haxie' (or something along those lines) that would allow me to configure, on a per-application basis, the 'Fn' modifier key and whether or not it will be required for single button usage of Apple's various special features, or for standard F-Key functionality)?

How do I stop itunes from corrupting it's library on almost a daily basis? It's actually becoming infurating to use, and what's happening is I am losing my downloads since the last automated itunes backup (having to rename & replace the current corrupted library with the last backup which is usually a day or two old).

I am not interested in picking up a 15" MBP and once question that I have kept on asking myself is whether or not to go with the less memory of the SSD or just get more memory with the older hard drives. My question is if I go with the default hard drive can you swap that out and use a SSD drive later on? Or do they both fit into the MBS's differently?

we all know that the regular 13" and 15" MBP's were upadted and are just as capable, acually other than the display they are more capable and more flexible machines than the Retina MBP. The only thing that hasn't been talked about anywhere is the fans in the regular MBP's.  I bought my wife the late 2011 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 500GB (5400RPM) MBP and threw in 16GB of RAM to replace the 4GB that came in it, since it was cheap at OWC ($167). When I get the updated 15" MBP with 2.6GHz, 512 SSD and 8GB of RAM, I will swap them out so that I have the 16GB RAM and she has the 8GB of RAM. Another reason I wanted the 16GB of RAM is because I will be getting into Photoshop and a bit of video editinig for fun with all the videos and photos that I take and some gaming with D III and SC II. So that's the plan so far.Â
I'm torn at the moment between the 15" Retina and Non-Retina MBP. I love the new disply but I'm torn that Apple decided to upgrade a display while loosing other features like the Ethernet Port and SuperDrive two things we are far from not needing altogether. Although, Apple screens all around great and the Hi-Res on the regular will do fine, the Retina MBP is such a slick and powerful machine. The money isn't a problem and I've configured both online and I'm looking at this below;Â

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a users machine that the fans wont stop running at high speed Its a 2011 MBA 13" i5 128gb ssd I installed a few fan monitors and fan controllers, they all say the fan is at 0rpm. Apple is not my first language; but Im warming up?I have performed an SMC reset as well as the P&R? reset?  Both went through properly, the SMC i could see the power cord light change colors, and the other reset performed before the chime would make the chime, black screen, rebooted. Alot of what I read on this topic consists of the machines fans ramping up because they are being used, or if its a fluke the SMC will reset it. I havnt been able to find anything in regards to the computer reporting 0% and just running non stop.

I have the Black Macbook 13" (from mid 2007). Model A1181. I think it was the 2.16Ghz, 160GB. OSX 10.4. I need help finding what Logic boards work with my Mac. Mine is broken and I need to replace. I will be looking at used or at least ones on ebay to minimize the cost. From the research that I have done. It looks like I can used any of the following:

*update* Upon further review I believe that I have found the Logic Board number. On the board itself it lists 820-1889-A? Sound correct. I do get hits when I google it. I guess my question is what is interchangeable with this?
Let me preemptively state that I know very little about computers. This problem is most likely easy to fix, but I wouldn't know where to start. We have wireless internet here in my house, and my MacBook will not connect to it. It's a Netgear router, and my Mac tells me I need a password to connect to it. We don't have a password set on our router. So, every time it tries to connect, it says that an error occurred. How do I get rid of this password thing? I just want to use the WiFi!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a MBP, it had a flickering screen (graphics card), so I got it fixed under warranty, then about a month after the fix, the MBP refused to wake - I took it back again and it was fixed.
Now the MBP is experiencing repeated kernel panics - especially after the any system update - there were a few recently.
The only solution seems to be switching the machine off and letting it cool.
I have System Preferences applications like Fan Control, Apple Qmaster, and others that require the System Preferences to quit and reopen, when I click one of the apps it used to tell me it needs to quit and reopen and then it open and load the application, but now it quits and doesn't reopen, when I open it myself the same message appears that it needs to quit and reopen, and the application never opens.Â

This may have started to happen after I used MacKeeper Files Cleanup tools, because I've had a similar problem with another application as well.
