OS X :: Alert Sound Missing During Video Chatting?
Aug 22, 2009
I just noticed that my ichat sound when I am in a video chat has disappeared. Its been missing for like 4 days during video chatting. If I am iming someone I don't get an sound alert to know they have sent me a message I get the number but I don't get the popping sound that you get when your iming and also in video chat and it all of a sudden stopped working. Its not the regular sound when iming its like a "pop".
When I am recording with the built in cam (isight) in imovie ("capturing" the video), there is no sound. I have gone through and looked at all input settings on the mac and in the application. when I pull up the settings box, I can even see the sound "bars" go up when I make noise. But no noise in the recordings.
I'm currently using a macbook pro 17" 10.5.8 / Unlike windows os, it alerts you in many occasion, for example: low battery, usb device inserted, etc. and you can change the alert sound for everyting in the control panel, sound, option.
so basically, how do I do the same thing on mac? do i need to install additional software? if yes.. any suggestion?
I recently got this new job where I have to video chat with clients living in China. The company wants me to use the Chinese QQ chat client; however, for macs, you can't video chat. Does anybody know of a chat client I can use on the mac (windows messenger?) that will let me video chat with somebody using QQ? I'm afraid if I don't solve this problem, I'll be out of a job. Note: I do not have windows installed on this computer, nor do I really want to splurge the money to get it since this is a low-paying job.
I am having trouble video-chatting with iChat. I've asked for help here before and i was told to but a larger RAM so i bought a 2gig RAM. Immediately following the purchase video chatting worked very well; however, recently it has been giving me trouble. Whenever i try to video chat with somebody (mainly my brother who has the same computer, same RAM, and better bandwidth) the program tells me either that i don't have sufficient bandwidth or that my brother didn't respond to the invitation when i know for a fact that he did respond. Sometimes iChat tells me that my computer doesn't support video conferencing even though the camera works very well. The only thing that has changed since the last time that video chat worked is the room that i am in at college; the bandwidth should be exactly the same as when video chatting did work. The RAM is 2BG 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and my brother has the same kind. We both have Mac OS X 10.5.5.
All the sudden today my ichat video chatting doesn't work just now. It only shows up with the audio chat. What do I do? Here's what it looks like, when I got to settings the green light turns on but no video.
I cant hear or see the other people when video chatting with skype, facebook video, messenger etc. it was working fine until it just stopped. I just moved house but have the same provider and still on the same account.
I am so used to using my MBA with no noise at all. Mostly my fan is around 2000 rpm.. MBA is very quiet. However when I do video chat in skype. Fan goes as high as 5500 rpm...and I hear the fan noise. Is there anyway to video chat without the fan noise?
I began hearing a sound about every minute that I assume is some kind of alert or notification that something needs attention but I can't determine what it is. It sounds like a single pick of a guitar string. I recently downloaded an upgrade to microsoft office but can't recall if it began right after that or not.
The "new mail sound" in Mail.app is still very sporadic. When new e-mails arrive in the inbox, the sound signaling that a new message has arrived only works less than half of the time. This was the same problem in 10.5.1. (White 17" iMac C2D 2.0, 3 gb ram) [URL]
I know it's a dumb question, but I've recently noticed that my mac has been making the most annoying sound quite frequently (i.e. basso). Just wondering what the default was as I'm fairly sure it hasn't always made this sound.
When I plug in my headphones or speakers to my macbook mac mail makes new mail, sent mail sounds for about a min. This only started happening the past couple weeks.
My new MacBook Pro runs perfectly. However, it makes the "funk" alert sound effect on a random basis and it is getting pretty annoying. Why is this happening? I am apparently not the only user experiencing this issue, but they did not identify the sound as being one of the built-in sounds.
I have an IMac. When I am in mail and type a word incorrect I get an alert sound. I do not get the red dashed line. I have looked all over Preferences. What am I missing? This is annoying. If I do a manual spell check of a document then it still does not underline misspelled words. I tested it in Textedit as well. No red line under the words.
I want to find the sound files because I want to convert them to wav to use as mail alert sounds for Thunderbird which I use instead of Mail, and don't know where to find the files. Â

Over the last few days I've noticed a problem with missing icons. It seems to mainly effect icons in the Trash but I have one or two missing icons for videos and apps within the Finder and on the Desktop. The icon is completely gone - I have to click on the filename to select it. Quicklook works OK (for video).
I can't think of anything I've installed that would have done it except Onyx, but I haven't run that in weeks. I did repair permissions a few days ago but I doubt that could break this. It persists after a reboot. I can't get it to happen on command, it just randomly occurs. Creating a New Folder always works OK.
I just installed the newest update to snow leopard (10.6.2). I have now discovered that the sound output in programs such as iTunes, Front Row, VLC and Firefox is gone along with the little sound it makes when turning up and down the volume. The same thing is the case when plugging in a mini-jack. Program sounds (in front row or in mail, when sending and receiving a mail) is still present.
Friends were having major problems with Mac OS 10.5.8. I tried to install 10.6 but the installation stalled several times. Through it all, I got OS 10.5.8 running for them again but the sound application is now missing, so I can't get the iMac to play sounds effects nor will it show the Harmann Kardon sound sticks as a sound output. They can't find their original install discs and I do not have that version. Will the sound application for system 10.6 work if I drag that file into their 10.5.8 system?
2009 iMac, external speakers connected to analog audio out. No longer work. System Preferences - Sound - Sound Output only shows built-in speakers. Tried zapping PRAM, tried deleting com.apple.sound.plist from /Library/Preferences. Doesn't show in Audio MIDI Setup either.
4. The same machine when booted in Windows (via Bootcamp/CSM-BIOS) plays perfectly and shows Cirrus Logic devices and the HDA devices. This should eliminate hardware issues.
5. I have checked for the Optical Audio microswitch being stuck, but that does not seem to be the case.
6. This was used with Apple Headphones which also have the microphone built-in [URL] ....
IORegistryExplorer showsÂ
Comparing it to another 13" Mid 2012 MBP which has working sound.Â
