I have an imac, I moved my iphoto library on to an external hard drive (lacie usb 2.0). I moved my iphoto library that was on the internal drive to my trash folder. (Dont want to delete until I know everything works properly).When I'm using iphoto I keep getting this message "Please make sure the disk containing your photo library is mounted and restart iPhoto".
View 5 RepliesI have a hard drive that I connect to my computer via an IDE to USB adapter. It works quite well, most of the time. A couple days ago I tried copying a large file to the drive (which is in FAT-16 I think) and the copy froze after 28 MB. The hard drive failed to eject, so I just disconnected it without ejecting. After I dismissed the device removal warning, I immediately plugged the HD back in and opened disk utility. I tried to reformat it, but the computer froze and my screen dimmed and the warning came up telling me to reboot in several different languages.
Now, whenever I plug in the hard drive, it is not acknowledged by the computer at all. I always end up unplugging it after a couple minutes. After I unplug it, a folder with the name of the drive (which happens to be "untitled") appears on the desktop, but I can't do anything with it. This folder is classified as a disk and it is acknowledged by Disk Utility. A couple minutes after I disconnect the HD, Mac OS X always quits and I have to reboot. How can I repair this hard drive? How can I get Disk Utility to acknowledge it?
I would like to move the application IPhoto to my external hard drive. Is there an easy way (or through a software program) to do this?

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file. Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up. Â
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found. Â

I often use external hard drives to back up my work. Recently I purchased a 1TB Lacie drive. I took a week to build a lovely new file structure for my work. At the end of this week, I began deleting the old files on other hard drives so as to transfer my new neatly structured work back on. In the midst of this, the brand new hard drive crashed, illiciting only the clicking sound of death.
That hard drive, some of my work (a very small amount but still) and a week's worth of sweat and blood was gone in an instant. The person I took it to to look at it mentioned a power surge as being a possible cause for the crash. Anyway, I returned the lacie and bought a 1T Western Digital Mybook (silver). I then began dumping the old back ups onto this.
A week in and this one is crashed too. No clicking sound of death. It calmly sits on my desk with it's unceasing unblinking blue light and refuses to show up in utilities no matter what I do. So I assume it's a goner also. I'll return it also of course. Is something causing these drives to fail...that exists in my walls? Are there power surges causing my drives to die...? OR is it simply a case of bad luck with my choices of new drives?
if i delete files off my internal hard drive (Macintosh HD), will it still be on my external hard drive or will it just add to it?

It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

i have a power mac g-5 quad with an external dvd drive and a external hard drive and 2gb of ram. on my ext. hard drive i downloaded mac the ripper and that is where i put all my dvds, now today on my pmac i was using mac the ripper, popcorn, itunes, safari all at once and it froze up on me?why? could the ram be an issue? how may programs can i use at once with my pmac?

I know this is a reoccurring question, but I haven't found the answer to this specific flavour of it, so I hope you can help. I'm using iphoto 09. After initially using it with default setup, I've now unticked the 'Copy items to the iphoto library' in preferences.I've got an external (NAS, one that is plugged in the router) harddrive with all my photos on it. I didn't want to pull them into a library on my mac, and putting the iphoto library onto the NAS drive didn't work either (it wouldn't load the thumbnails). So I've decided to leave the photos where they are and point iphoto to them without importing them (by unticking that box I mentioned, which was described in another post). Deleting however is a problem. Ideally I would hope I can delete a photo in iphoto and it would be deleted on the NAS drive as well. I've read all the posts about deleting and then emptying the iphoto trash, which I did. I pressed all sorts of keys when deleting (cmd, alt, ctrl, shift etc. - didn't work either.

View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a 60GB iPhoto 08 library that I want to move from my internal iMac drive to my iomega 1TB NAS drive. Both the NAS and the iMac are connected via Gigabit ethernet. I have dragged a ton of files, namely my Itunes database, and it flew threw very quickly. But copying my iPhoto database, and pasting it to the NAS drive, it is crazy slow. 60 minutes later and it just finished it's first Gig. It says I have about 61 hours remaining to copy the remaining 59GB.
iPhoto is closed, and there is not much else going on with the machine. Even while this is copying I can drag and drop lots of other files and they fly through the network. Is this what I should expect?

How do I move my iphoto picture library to an external drive and delete from my HD and then access through iphoto? I lost my iphoto library so I have everything in Masters on my HD. When I import to iphoto, it groups all the photos and sates into various events. Is there a way to get my organization back or is it another manual process? my mac has a pioneer dvd drive in it and it wont read my dvd+r dl and I am wanting to burn a mac os 10.5.dmg to it and install 10.5 but the dang thing is ejecting it. So what should I do to get it to work get the external dvd and run it from it or get a external hard drive and try it that way.

I am really excited to have the extra space. I purchased this MBP a few months ago and would like to do a fresh install of Leopard. It booted fine until I copied an iphoto library from a friend's Mac and now this disk won't boot. I get the circle with the slash through it and the folder with the question mark on it. I ran it through disk utility and it was verified with no problems.

I recently switched over to a Mac from a PC which I've had for years. Since I never had a photo storage program on my PC, all my photos were kept in folders on my hard drive. When I got my Mac, all my photos were imported into iPhoto and now I simply use iPhoto for everything I upload. My question is, can I delete the old photos (now imported into iPhoto but still on my hard drive in seperate folders) from my hard drive to save space without deleting them from iPhoto? I checked my settings and I do have the "copy to iPhoto library" option checked but I don't know if that makes a difference. Any information would be helpful - it would be nice if I knew I could delete photos that are essentially duplicates to save space on my hard drive.
