Mac Pro :: Internal External Hard Vs External Hard Drive
Jul 12, 2010
Looking for opinions or comparisons on performance between an internal mac hard drive vs an external firewire 800 hard drive or better. Is the performance on an internal MP drive or iMac internal drive much faster than connecting to a firewire 800 drive? I'm sure it depends on the drive, I'm wondering about apple factory installed internal drive vs say a WD external firewire 800

I have owned a Mac Mini for three years now (my friends convinced me to try the Apple way and this is my first Mac). The CD/DVD died just three weeks after warranty expired and Apple said (in essence) 'tough crap...you didn't buy AppleCare'.I have functioned without a CD/DVD drive since then, and everything was fine... until a week or two ago. We installed an update in iTunes, and everything started running S...L...O...W... So, we rebooted the computer! Instead of rebooting, it made the "bong!" sound and then a screen with an apple and a spinning wheel runs indefinitely. We let it run all night the first time and it stays on that screen for as long as you let it.

This is in regards to the 2010 mini. I have been reading up on SSD, Hybrids and FW800 with a 7200. What is the easiest AND most effective/cost effective solution? If I went he FW800 route, can I use the same drive as my data storage drive? Will there be enough headroom to run the OS over FW and use the drive to stream movies playing in another room on Apple TV2 simultaneously? Will this give me a performance increase over the internal 5400 if I use the external 7200 for everything over FW800?
That is where my thoughts about the hybrid come into play. I know I can stream the iTunes content over USB2, which I have at the moment for the big drive. I would need to go buy an enclosure with FW800 to run it as a boot drive. I could use that same money and go get a 500GB Hybrid drive and install myself and leave the USB2 as data only. If the install is painless but tedious, I might just do that. If the FW800 route would be robust enough to run the OS and stream data to other devices simultaneously (ie use it as I would the regular internal drive), I might just do that and wait for SSD prices to come tumbling down and do a bigger internal SSD in the future.

In other words... I have moved my music library to the external hard drive, as per an earlier thread I read here on the forums. It worked like quite well. Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

iPod shuffle, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I want to get one of those hard disk 'holders' that allows you to plug an internal-type hard disk into the USB or Firewire port of another laptop. I want to know if they need to be specific to the type of hard disk/laptop or if they're more of a one-size-fits-all type of thing. The hard disk is a solid state type that I installed in a mid-2010 model MacBook which has now failed. I want to connect it to a 2005-model PowerBook G4. Can this be done and what do i need to buy to do it?

I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.Â
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.Â
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.Â
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?Â

I have a SimpleTech - 160G external HD.
I've used this on a Windows Vista and MacBook before.
When I try to add or delete a file to the HD, this message is displayed:
"The item "________" could not be moved because "SignatureMini" cannot be modified."
Any suggestions?
I heard that possibly re-formatting the HD using disc utilities could work, but it's worked on my MacBook before.
As well, doing this could erase everything on the HD, and I do not have enough storage on my computer to store all the files.

When I plug in my 250gb Wester Digital external hard drive into my mac, it just makes some starting up noise, and clicks and then does it again, and again,... never appearing on my desktop or in my finder. My mac is an Ibook from 2002. I need to back up my data on an external drive to move to my new PC computer (it was free.)Is the drive bad? Or am I not doing something correctly? There's no user manual.

I wanted content from some miniDV tapes to be transferred to my computer. I don't have a miniDV camcorder/reader so went to a friend who has it and is using Mac OS X 10.5.8 and does not have machines running Windows at all. I took my miniDV tapes(each an hour long) to him with my external hard drive so that he could copy the content of tapes to the external hard drive. The external hard drive was formatted using NTFS as I was using it on my Win XP. I took it to him and he formatted the external drive using FAT so that his Mac could write to it. Problem was the miniDV tapes of 1 hour content would translate to 16GB or so content and since he formatted the external hard drive using FAT, the tapes are about 3.6GB. I suspect since FAT cannot hold more than 4GB the tapes got clipped. I asked my friend to install [URL] -NTFS 3g so that his Mac can read/write to NTFS. He did that and then tried to format the external drive to OS X Journal Extended mode, but the formatting failed at various times quoting "Unmounting failed".
1. Did what I suggest(have my friend install MAC -NTFS 3g so that his Mac can read/write to NTFS) a proper choice or is there another method which I should have pursued?
2. What could be the reason for Unmounting failed when he tried to format the external drive to OS X Journal Extended mode? Could the hard drive have gone bad(hardware issue) or because he was trying to format a disk having FAT file system to OS X Journal Extended mode there could be issues? What other file system should I ask him to try to format which might work?
3. Are there any other methods we should look into for what I need(digitizing the miniDV tapes to an external hard drive so that I can edit them on my Win XP machine)? I don't know anyone else who has a miniDV camcorder/reader.
4. If he transfers the tapes into the external drive having a OS X Journal Extended mode file system, the way I can read and copy them(miniDV content as AVI files) from the external drive to my Windows machine is using Macdrive [URL] or are there some other better/free utilities available. This is a one time job so if there is a trial version fully functional for 30 days, I can download it and use it..

I am looking to buy an external hard drive that I can use to store files from my iBook laptop as well as my desktop PC. I'd like at least 250GB of storage, and it would be great if it were very simple to use, since I'm kind of clueless.

I have a MacBook with Leopard on it. I recently bought an external hard drive (WD with 500GB). I also have a Dell Lattitude 810, Microsoft Windows XP. Originally, the external drive was only formatted for the MAC. The guy at the MAC store told me I could reformat my external hard drive by going into the disk utility option, changing the volume format to MS-DOS (FAT). I did that and my Dell recognized the external hard drive and I was able to save information on it. However when I went back to put information from my MAC on the external hard drive it, it shows that the backup is delayed, and in time machine it says the backup has failed. I tried re-formatting the external drive back to MAC (Journaled). It still failed. I need to back up my MAC as it has the more important information on it. Also if there is a reliable and easy way to back up both using the same hard drive.

Basic dumb question. My buddy has both a pc and a mac at work. He has music spread across both of them. What he'd like to do is colelct all his media files and put them on one external hard drive, then be able to connect both his PC and his MBP to the hardrive to access his music.
What would be the best way to do this? Is there something exceedingly simple like a hard drive with two USB outs that could feed both computers at the same time?

I just bought an external hard drive (My Passport for Mac) because my Macbook's hard drive is almost full. I did not want it necessarily for backup purposes, but rather I wanted to be able to store music, docs, etc. that I might want to access in the future, but want to remove from my computer for now.
Should I use Time Machine? Will time machine let me access my hard drive to obtain certain files when needed? Or is Time Capsule's sole purpose to backup everything on my computer?

I'm running 10.6.5 on a 2.4ghz Macbook Pro, but I don't think this info is necessarily relevant because my problem is with an external drive. I left the country for four months, and on my return, my hard drive (which had been sitting on a shelf in untouched for months) would not power up. It is a WD MyBook 750 gb. Since the problem was in the power, I assumed that the enclosure, not the drive, was faulty. I ordered a hard drive dock so I could test it out, and it finally arrived today. The dock powers on when the drive is not in the slot, but when the drive is inserted (before power on) the power light does not turn on. Is anyone with some hard drive knowledge able to point me in the right direction? What could the problem be? Is it fixable? Is my information recoverable?
