I accidentally unplugged the surge protector 2 days ago. When I replugged it in, the computer was not turning on. The green light on the tower was on, but with absolutely no signs of life.
View 1 Repliesi just bought an mac book pro off ebay and everything was fine with it until the second day i had it.. no signs of life what so ever i have taken it done to a local repair store and they have said to me that the logic board is gone...to make things worse they completely rounded off the screws on the battery pack..i have made a appointment at the genius bar for tomorrow.

I've been given an iBook g4 (Late 2004 Model according to apple) and... It's completely dead! No lights come up on the Battery when I press the button. I've tried restting the PMU..But nothing yet. I dont have the offical Apple plug, its a replacement one. Can that make much of a difference?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got a new Macbook Air and took it on a month-long trip, leaving my 2008 MB at home, discharged. It has all my old files, not backed up. I didn't think this would happen! The charging light shows green and never changes to amber. None of the indicator lights are on and there is no response at all to pushing power, even after hours of charging. I tried taking out the battery, no difference.

When using PC, WINDOWS warned about not to disconnect USB/FW connected hardware until you ask the system to do so and the system confirmed it was safe to do so. However, I've been told that with Mac you can directly connect/disconnect the cables without any previous confirmation from the system. I'm confused, since I can not find how to get confirmation form the MAc that it is safe to disconnect the USB/FW.

All of a sudden, it disappears from the desktop with an error message about improper devise removal. I've checked the cables: everything is like it should be. After restart all drives are back at the desktop. But it keeps happening fsck didn't help. I'm running DiskWarrior right now. What could it be? Both drives are quite new Seagate 7200.10, I think... Not older than 1 year.
View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery 5 to 10 minutes, my MBA "seems" to disconnect from the internet, although according to my Mac, it's still connected and shows my current IP address. I know it's not my router (Dlink DIR-624) because everything else stays connected. I don't have a problem with my Dell laptop, AirPort Express (used only to stream iTunes to my home theater), iPod Touch or either of my iPhones. The problem only occurs with the MBA.
Renewing my DHCP Lease fixes the problem for a couple minutes, but then I lose connection again.
The Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting (all networks), although they continue to be available on my iPhone, Mac Book Air (OS X Lion 10.7.3) and another PC. I have to reselect the network manually in the shortcut (top right of the screen), a few seconds later I am connected again. The problems seems to be related to inactivety on the iMac. For example if you are reading some pages, without any key strokes or mouse activity, but there does not seem to be any specific time for repeatability of the problem. It is just anoying. I recently bought a late 08 aluminum macbook and have been quite happy with it but from quite some time I've noticed that while I'm on internet and on adium (where I noticed the most) the signal goes off for a couple of seconds and then it comes back. First i thought it was ok but it's been happening really often and is quite annoying since it happens several times a day and only happens to me and not anyone on my network (everyone else has pc`s and are also on wifi). So I wanted to ask.. is it possible my Airport card is failing? or is my router the one failing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have four external drives connected to my MBP: One USB 2.0 drive, and three that are connected via FireWire 800 (they are connected "in line", i.e. one is connected to the MBP, the second one is connected to the first one, and the third one is connected to the second one).For several months already, I experience the following anomaly:When an external drive hasn't been used for a while it normally goes into sleep mode and the otherwise turning disks come to a standstill. The problem, however, starts when I want to use the data of one of the "sleeping" drives (e.g. by opening the Finder): Then one or more other drives, that are also in sleep mode, but used to come back into "active" mode in the past, are suddenly disconnected. MAC OS X then displays the message that a disk has been disconnected without being formally ejected (via the dustbin). This is not normal, of course, and I am afraid that this behaviour could harm the disks health and live time.I have tried the Disk Utility Tool of OS X for all the drives mentioned, but they seem to be ok.

I've been having this problem for awhile- maybe some of your intelligent people can help me.
I have an airport extreme and two 1TB hard drives connect to it through a USB hub.
Every night, I have a program that copies one of the hard drives on to the other. This has worked for the first year that I had the setup.
Recently, when copying, the mounted hard drives will disconnect and I will loose my internet connection. When this happens, the green light on my airport extreme turns to yellow and starts flashing- is it is restarting.
This also occurs if I manually try to copy a large batch of files.
I'm usually decent at debugging computer issues, but this one has me stumped.
I've had an WD My book 500 GB external for about as long as I've had my macbook about 1 1/2 years. No trouble with it at all, until yesterday. At some point either the power got cut or the cable was pulled out incorrectly it got disconnected from the mac. Thus resulting in it not mounting now. I've tried disk repair and shutting down the macbook and restarting...plugging in after everything is started. but to no avail. I am a photographer and about 25% of my photographs I don't have backed up anywhere else. So if I can't get it to work. I need some way to get the information off and reformat. or get it working correctly.

I want to completely re-install Mac OS X on my Mac Pro for several reasons:
The system is old. I started it with 10.4.1 and upgraded it to 10.5, then to 10.6. On the way there, the system has been moved from an old Mac Pro to a new one.
The system has seen a lot of playing around with, tons of installs (incl. drivers) and by now is simply a grown mess with a lot of problems that I can't seem to fix nor want to fix.
So - I want a fresh start. And I need some help planing this.
Back in the days of 10.5 you had the option to "archive and install", which would simply move the old system to a folder and install a baby fresh Mac OS X on the system. You could then go ahead and move things like applications, the user library and what not from the archived location back to the new install, one by one, piece by piece, in a very controlled fashion.
With 10.6 that option is no longer available.so the question is: How do I erase and install Mac OS X 10.6 while retaining my old stuff? I know how to do the fresh install, the point is more like how do I keep and import old stuff...
How good is the migration assistant? I figure you can use it to import old stuff from a time machine backup.
In the end, I want a fresh install and be able to import things like preferences/library for certain applications (that I don't want to rebuild from scratch, like a huge Plex Media Center install) - without reimporting things that are causing problems on the current install.

Anyway, before the celebrations begin I want to know how I can completely copy my current Mac's hard disk to an external hard disk so that I can then copy this all onto my new Mac. Forget networking old and new Macs, that's out of the question for reasons too complicated to go into here.
Ideally I'd like to have my new Mac with all of the apps and documents and what have you that I've got on my current Mac.
Can I achieve this all with Time Machine ie. can another Mac read the backed-up data from another Mac?

The cooling fan, that is. It had been making a noise for a few months. Today I suddenly noticed a big drop in speed even for basic tasks such as scrolling down browser window. I realised the fan was silent, so I checked with Istat, and the fan was at 0 rpm. I immediately switched off the machine. A very faint smell of burn plastic is perceptible if one sniffs my MacBook. My questions:
- The MB was active without a working fan for 5-10 mins at the most. What are the odds that I cooked some crucial part?
- If I did cook some crucial part, could a technician tell when s/he opens the MB to change the fan?
- How much should I expect to pay (in the UK) for replacing the fan?
I'm trying to figure out whether I should get a new MBP 13''. I was hoping to hold back until the next refresh, as the hardware on the current version isn't that different from what I have in my 2007 MB. Thanks in advance for your help.

Since then it refused to boot.
I've tried :
1. cmd+option+p+r
2. fsck -dy(it gives out a disk0s errors and other errors).
3.cmd+s.
Everything fails. Now when it starts up i'll see the apple grey screen then it goes off.

View 12 Replies View RelatedThere have been many brief posts mentioning that unlike previous MBAs, the new MBAs do not slow down the CPU when heat goes beyond a certain point. Does this mean there is completely no CPU throttling at all? Or that it still throttles, but at a higher heat level? If there is completely no CPU throttling, then logically it should fall back to another common method of handling overheating which is to automatically turn off the machine (not a very elegant method, but at least it's something). Do the new MBAs do this? If not, how do they handle overheating?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wonder if it is possible to hide the Dock completely. If you go to Dock settings and hide it, it will appear when the cursor near its edge. What I want, is to hide it completely - dont want it to appear all of a sudden and interrupt me. I found the app Dock Gone, which hides the Dock and makes it accessible via a keyboard-shortcut. Thing is, it costs $14.95, and I just want the dock to disappear.
Is there a way to do this? A terminal command or something? I guess there must be - Dock Gone is doing it somehow.
I opened up Garageband, went into preferences to configure the audio for my peripheral audio device, and the computer and curser locked up, so I had to shut it down by pressing the power button for 4 seconds. I restarted the G4 and it would only boot up to a blue screen with the pointer curser, but would not finish loading anything on the desktop, no icons, no menu, nothing. I tried restarting repeatedly this way, but got the same result each time.
