PowerPC :: Dead Ibook Or Just Malfunctioning OS?

Nov 13, 2010

I have a 5 year old Ibook G4, which I belive just quit on me 4 nights ago. Ive had problems with it the last couple of months, like spotlight not longer working, the wifi indicatior, batteri indicator and the clock dissapeard from the top hand right corner.. and could not seem to get them turned on again. What happend; I was going to watch a movie with VLC, which kept switching itself of, I tried to restart it several times,. I then restarted the whole computer, but it would not boot up to the OS, but instead it was a black screen with a few lines written, but it did not stay on long enough that I could see what was written. Afterwards the window with MacOSX is starting up.. and the regular light blue screen. Then the MacOSX "tablet" dissapeard, and all that where visible was the light blue screen, and the mouse courser.. I could not turn up or down the brighness of the screen, nor would the volume. I restartet the machine 3-4 times but the same results. Tried the morning after, but to no use. I did download a Flash blocker program 2 days prioer to this happening, but I dont think that would "kill" of the Mac. I did try to restart it after some advice on another board, with holding the Shift button in.. this is what happend.

Darwin/BSD(m192k.studeby.ntnu.no)(console)
login:
password:

Then I wrote some jibberish as login and password.. it just keeps repeating itself over and over again. I pulled out the network cable, and restart.. and this appears:

Uninet: monitor linkstatus, link is down
My name - ibook - g4. local (console)
Login:
Password:

Also, I held in apple+s and wrote /sbin/fsck - fy, let it run through and it said: Found 34 files, should be 35. HD was sucessfully reparied. Mac HD appears OK. Then I rebooted. all that happens is I get the light blue screen, and the mouse courser.. which works fine. What has happend to my machine? Is it dead? It's only 5 years old.. it has had such a short life.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - Battery Dead

Sep 8, 2007

My mum has an trusty iBook G4, and finally, after ~4 years now, the battery is on the fritz. I have tried resetting PMU, but it appears the battery itself is on the way out. Is it worth purchasing a new battery for it? Or should I tell her to take the plunge and buy a low-end Macbook [non pro] to replace it?

PowerPC :: 12" Ibook Lcd - Completely Remove?

Jul 6, 2006

my 12" ibook is basically retarded. the joint (err whatever it's called) between the lcd and the computer is completely busted and a few of the wires are a bit messed up. one wire (small, thin & black) is ripped in half and the green one is shaved a bit... anyway, what happens is the ibook still boots up, runs fine, but the lcd screen is completely gray, understandably so. but, i am able to use my television and a vga adapter as a monitor and the computer is completely funcitonal.

my question is, can i completely remove the lcd screen (so it can be sold) and basically set my ibook up as a desktop with a standalone lcd monitor? also, anyone possibly know how i could check to see if the lcd screen is still functional? it was working fine if the wires were touching in a certain way previously, but i think my mom kicked it or somethin and now all i get is a gray screen. (funny story ... kinda -- the computer was originally broke from my retarded friend, he left the ****in' thing on the top of my car and forgot about it when getting in... all because he wanted to burn a cd on a road trip. needless to say, he doesn't touch anything valuable of mine anymore. lesson learned.)

PowerPC :: Trackpad On IBook G4 Completely Disabled

Apr 1, 2008

I have an ibook g4 14" since 2003. It always worked perfectly until now. The trackpad is completely disabled. I cannot install, use an external mouse, or use the mouse track from the mac. I found out what the problem is, then trying with the keyboard, I use ctl & O (open) and I got to the preferences, then I type trackpad sensitivity, and it opens. In the trackpad says trackpad gestures: and the Clicking is unchecked, what keys from the keyboard can I use to check that box? And in the trackpack options:
The Ignore accidental trackpad input is checked
and
Ignore trackpad when mouse is present is unchecked.

PowerPC :: Dead IBook - Gray Screen Goes On And On?

May 14, 2007

I signed up here to ask a life or death question for my iBook G3 While transferring through an airport last week on one of those moveable walkways, I got clipped off by another passenger who was running through the terminal to catch his flight. Unfortunately, he somehow managed to send my briefcase- with the iBook- sailing ten feet accross the terminal, landing onto the floor with a sickening thud. Although the iBook was fortunately in a protective notebook cover, and there were no cracks to be seen when I retreived it, my attempts to fire up the iBook have failed. That is, when turning the machine on, everything seems to lead me on that its going to run normally- the OS9 to OS10.3 transfer clicks in, I get the grey apple symbol on the grey background with the running circle below- and then nothing. The grey screen goes on, and on, and on. I tried it again this morning and it stayed like this for an hour. Worse, I cannot simply turn the machine off without hitting the reset button, and all attempts to reinstall the programs or do a hardware test lead to nothing. If I had more time, I'd probably search high and low through the forums to see if there was anything I could do to bring the iBook back to life. Unfortunately, I have to leave in two days again, and wanted to bring the laptop with me. is there some way that I can get this dear old beast running again, or is it curtains for my beloved iBook?

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Dead - Refused To Turn On

Jul 27, 2008

My iBook G4 is refusing to turn on. Yesterday it started going really slow and pressing the power button wasn't bringing up the usual options, so I held the power button to switch it off. On turning it back on it got stuck on the screen with the Apple logo and spinner for a long time so again I powered it off with the holding of the button. I then let it cool down (it was really hot) but now when I switch it on the spinner spins around 6 times then it turns itself off. It is still chiming. I'm away from home and don't have any discs - anything I can try or is it time for the Genius bar?

PowerPC :: Ibook G3 A1007 Seems Dead - No Chime / Nothing On Display

Dec 15, 2010

A friend gave me one of these, said he didn't test it. i tested it but have observed the following: ring on PSU plug illuminates fine, was orange but now greed thus battery charges ok. battery button works too, pressing that initially showed 1 dot, now shows 4. charge ok and accepted. pressing the power button though, i hear the fan spin for 1 sec, the disk and the cd drive click in, but no chime and nothing on the display. no response nothing, a hard reset (hold power) turns it off. I did the PMU reset, and the pmu did do a reset, but nothing. I also did the PRAM, and again nothing. I am suspecting a faulty logic board, I hope i can get this going as aesthetically it's in good condition. For the info it appears to be an iBook G3 model A1007, If you need any more info then give me a shout.

PowerPC :: Changing Dead Logic Board On IBook?

Oct 16, 2006

My logic board is getting ready to crap out for the third time. I hadn't planned on wasting $$ on replacing it, but I have a friend who has an old iBook with a dead screen who told me I could have it. So, my quetion is how hard is it to switch out the logic boards? Has anyone done it? I'd prefer not to pump more money into this thing since it's probably going to die again in 6-9 months.

Also, is there a fan in the 500mHz iBooks? I'm thinking that may be the problem, b/c it's been running incredibly hot lately and have never heard the fan come on.

PowerPC :: IBook G3 (Clamshell) - Booting From New MBP CD?

Oct 18, 2010

I recently came into possession of an iBook G3 (Clamshell) model M6411. Unfortunately, I believe it had a cactus HDD - it shows up in Target Disk Mode on my current model 13" MBP but refuses to format or read - locks Disk Utility/Finder up when accessed. The iBook also has NO CDROM drive in it, either (removed by previous owner, reasons unsure). I'd just like to get it to boot to see that everything else works ok. I have a retail install of OS 9.2.1 as well as an iMac G3 OS X 10.1 install CD, and a 10.3 retail disc too.

I am aware that PPC Macs cannot boot from USB CDROM drives, but they can using FireWire. So, I tried plugging it in via FireWire to my MBP, put the MBP in Target Disk Mode, put the CD in it, and held Option while booting the iBook. The iBook sees the CD on the MBP, I click on it to boot it, and it shows the Happy Mac (this is with the 10.1 CD). However, after about a minute, it shows a strange "broken folder" icon (a Mac OS 9 folder with a tear down the middle) on a grey background. It gets no further. If I use the 9.2.1 CD, it shows a Happy Mac briefly then switches to a floppy disk with a question mark. The 10.3 CD refuses to boot at all. One thing I forgot to mention is if I try and boot the iBook normally, it shows a Finder icon alternating to a ? in a blue Mac OS 9 folder.

PowerPC :: G4 Ibook Dead - Blank Screen - Fan Runs On High Speed?

Nov 22, 2008

I purchased a used ibook from owc in January and have had it back to them twice for repairs. Lately, it stopped booting up again and they told me to use [URL] to take the mobo out and ship it to Arizona to have the solder refloated. I did and got it back, put it together and it would boot up, only to run for 15 minutes and shut down. Thinking I missed something, I dissasembled it today and reassembled it. Now it turns on with a blank screen, the fan runs on high, and it will go no further. I tried to reset the power manager, reset the p-ram, the hard drive is only a few months old and my brain is getting fried with frustration.

PowerPC :: IBook Locked Up And Not Booting After Restart

Aug 9, 2007

I have an iBook G4 (1.25g memory and 1ghz processor) running Tiger. I have never had any problems with my iBook in the past and now it seems the second my warranty expires I do. I was using it earlier today and the entire thing just locked up for the first time ever and little lines started appearing on the screen. I turned it off and rebooted it and it froze on the Grey screen, I repeated and it keeps doing the same things. It actually loaded a few times and then promptly froze. I tried booting from the CD and it freezes right on the screen to select your language (if it gets that far).

I went into applejack/single user (which runs fine) and repaired disk/repaired permissions/cleaned up system files/ and cleaned up virtual memory. I also used the fsck -y check disk which I'm assuming is the same as typing in 'applejack' and then selecting 1 (But I thought I would use it anyway). The first time I ran fsck it said it changed a system file. I then ran it again and it said that the HD seemed okay. Assuming that fixed the problem I restarted my computer and it froze...again. Or is there a way to reformat from single user?

PowerPC :: Dead IBook (2001) - Won't Start Up - No Noise From Fans / Hard Drive

Dec 22, 2006

I have an iBook 500Mhtz PPC G3, 384 RAM, 10GB HD, Dual USB. Several months ago, I opened it up and it simply would not start up. No start up sound, no noise from the fans/HD/anything, motionless. Completely dead. I've held (many times) the PMU, and tried almost anything. Is there anything else I can do to get it to AT LEAST turn on? The battery is dead, and the charger is fine, but the battery won't charge. I tested the charger on a PB G4. I'd rather sell the whole computer as a working computer. I figured I'd get more money that way. do I need to sell it for parts?

PowerPC :: Dead IBook - Flashing - Folder On Gray Screen Back Ground

Jul 11, 2009

I have recently come across an extremely cheap ibook (free) which i was able to keep if I got it too work. Well I've been successfully fairly by using it for a few weeks, then it just died. Not sure how it did but it did. The problems seem to be with the flashing (Finder/?) folder on a gray screen back ground. I've already run through the [URL] tutorials of what's wrong and have successfully done a PRAM and a PMU reset with no result. One of the times that I restarted the iBook and after the flashing folder got two new separate folders. One with an arrow turning clockwise on the left, and another folder with an arrow pointing right on the right. Both in blue folders as the flashing folders. Now I believe the problem is that the iBook is unable to find and utilize the Startup Disk. Forums I have read state to put in the reinstall disc, which I don't see how that will work on account of the CD tray not responding to anything I've yet put in there. Not trying with disc until i know that is the only possible solution. Don't want to loose my disc. Maybe some of you have come across this situation and know of a sure fire way to fix it. If not, Ill have to just send it in to some site.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Not Booting - Goes To White Apple Screen And Spins

Aug 26, 2006

I just moved back up to Jacksonville with my friend and now his iBook G4 is not booting. It goes to the white Apple screen and spins for about twice as long as normal, and then goes to a black screen with just a type-cursor in the top left hand corner which erases any text submitted. Now, from there I went ahead and booted from the Tiger Install disk and ran permission repair and also disk repair, without any glitches. Also, we then booted again and ran a hardware diagnostic and it turned up absolutely no problems with the computer. Any ideas? Luckily, he's still under his first year of AppleCare (and he's about to purchase an extension since you can now get it in Florida legally) and he should be covered.

PowerPC :: Tried Booting IBook With MBP Startup Disks - Kernel Panic

Sep 8, 2007

I'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.

I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.

PowerPC :: IBook Booting - Gray Overlay With With Little Box Saying To Restart System

Apr 6, 2008

I started up my iBook today and it took me all the way through sign-in to my desktop before giving me a grey overlay with a little box saying that I need to restart. So I did and then it took me to my desktop again before scrolling code across the screen in a very messy, un-mac-like way. I tried getting into safe boot (restarting and pressing shift from after the tone until the apple and wheel show up) and it just ran the apple and wheel grey start-up screen for a while before kicking back into a normal restart and giving me the earlier results. So I went and got myself into single-user mode and ran the fsck -yf command. It told me this: Checking Catalog file Invalid extent entry (4, 190) Volume check failed Is there any way to fix this, to save my computer? I don't know anything about code or computers. My general mode of operation has been "I bought a /mac/. I shouldn't ever have to look at code."

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Booting - Gray Screen With Apple Turning Gear Comes On Start Up

Dec 30, 2008

A friend of mine brought over his 14" iBook G4, 1.33GHz, 60GB HDD and 1.25 GB RAM. The problem with it is that upon start-up, the grey screen with the apple/turning gear comes up, then after a few moments a blue screen will appear, though no box showing the start-up process. I've run a few basic diagnostics on this, including the lovely disk utility (which did nothing), I've run fsck, zapped the PRAM, etc, no success as of yet. At one point, I received a screen with alternating folders, one showing the smiley mac face, the other folder with a flashing "?". I cannot replicate this for the life of me. I have attempted to acquire files via TDM, though am not able to see the hard drive despite using 2 different laptops. Possibly the firewire cable itself is spent, though it's brand new! Here is where I become increasingly frustrated: I ask my friend for the boot disks as the ones for my own 12" iBook don't work (for whatever reason). He tells me that he loaded Leopard this summer (currently running 10.5.2, no updates loaded since), then proceeds to bring over boot discs for a MacBook...:headdesk: To begin with, it seemed like the HDD was fried, however, after running disk utility (and not hearing any negative sounds), it does appear that the HDD is fine. I'm thinking a kernel panic, though not sure how to resolve these.
