MacBook Pro :: Sudden Disconnection Of External Drives

Mar 16, 2012

I have four external drives connected to my MBP: One USB 2.0 drive, and three that are connected via FireWire 800 (they are connected "in line", i.e. one is connected to the MBP, the second one is connected to the first one, and the third one is connected to the second one). For several months already, I experience the following anomaly:When an external drive hasn't been used for a while it normally goes into sleep mode and the otherwise turning disks come to a standstill. The problem, however, starts when I want to use the data of one of the "sleeping" drives (e.g. by opening the Finder): Then one or more other drives, that are also in sleep mode, but used to come back into "active" mode in the past, are suddenly disconnected. MAC OS X then displays the message that a disk has been disconnected without being formally ejected (via the dustbin). This is not normal, of course, and I am afraid that this behaviour could harm the disks health and live time.I have tried the Disk Utility Tool of OS X for all the drives mentioned, but they seem to be ok.

MacBook Pro :: Does The Sudden Motion Sensor Work With 12.5mm 1TB Drives?

Dec 1, 2010

I'm installing the Samsung SpinPoint drive tonight and was curious. Does the sudden motion sensor still function properly? The reviews on Newegg don't seem sure. One guy thinks it still works, but he simply
no longer hears it, and another is convinced that without the clicking sound that comes with moving the MBP, it's simply not functioning.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Not Mounting After Improper Disconnection

Jul 4, 2009

I've had an WD My book 500 GB external for about as long as I've had my macbook about 1 1/2 years. No trouble with it at all, until yesterday. At some point either the power got cut or the cable was pulled out incorrectly it got disconnected from the mac. Thus resulting in it not mounting now. I've tried disk repair and shutting down the macbook and restarting...plugging in after everything is started. but to no avail. I am a photographer and about 25% of my photographs I don't have backed up anywhere else. So if I can't get it to work. I need some way to get the information off and reformat. or get it working correctly.

MacBook Air :: WiFi Disconnection - How To Configure

Aug 7, 2009

Every 5 to 10 minutes, my MBA "seems" to disconnect from the internet, although according to my Mac, it's still connected and shows my current IP address. I know it's not my router (Dlink DIR-624) because everything else stays connected. I don't have a problem with my Dell laptop, AirPort Express (used only to stream iTunes to my home theater), iPod Touch or either of my iPhones. The problem only occurs with the MBA.

Renewing my DHCP Lease fixes the problem for a couple minutes, but then I lose connection again.

OS X :: MacBook Not Seeing External Drives

Oct 11, 2007

Although they work fine on other computers, my external hard drive and USB key won't show up on my macbook. I know it gives power to them since my external lights up when it's plugged in, and I see that they're connected in the System Profiler, but they don't appear on the desktop. Also, my ipod shows up in iTunes, but the computer always says it's corrupted, although it works fine. I thought that was an iPod/iTunes thing but since finding out about my hard drives.

MacBook Pro :: Multiple External Drives

Aug 24, 2010

I have a few external drives for my Macbook Pro. One of the drives is an Iomega MaxMini with USB ports on the back to add drives.

My question is; when I hook up the drives to my laptop I get about 4 drive icons on the desktop for each of the partitions, and when I need to remove them I have to eject them or move them to the trash icon.
Is there a way I can put the drives in a folder of some kind that I can just eject and make the desktop look less cluttered?

MacBook :: No External DVD Drives Will Mount?

Mar 21, 2012

I have tried a Samsung Drive and an ASUS slim drive (that worked twice, then stopped working). They do show up in the Disk Utility, but not on the desktop. Disc Utility states that burning is not supported, even though I was able to burn two discs with the ASUS before it stopped as well. I had my keyboard replaced around the same time as the issue starting, it is possible that they could they have messed with something by accident. The tech did also forget to put a screw in above the DVD Drive. I also will note the internal drive is a Combo Drive, not a superdrive.

MacBook Pro :: Managing A MBP With SSD And External Drives For Data?

May 9, 2010

Managing a MBP with SSD and external drives for data?

Its come to the point of upgrading my 2007 MBP 2.4 to a new i7 that I'm thinking of ordering it with a SSD drive. Its the biggest 'hit' to increase performance it seems. Problem is the size of the SSD drives for cost. I can justify the 256GB model but not $1300 for 500GB which would be ideal, and even if I wait 6 months or so to get a 500GB I don't see the price coming down all that much. So...

Let say I order an APPLE SSD in my MBP and use it for a boot drive and some files. How do I configure/set-up the external drive to read its files for Aperture, iTunes, documents.... Thinking now is that I would use a WD 2TB external drive in RAID so I have the files on one 1TB and auto back-up on the other 1TB in one inclosure, and another 1TB drive for Time Machine.

This kind of limits my portability, so I'm also thinking I'd also have a portable larger HD to take with me when I need it. How do I sync the files I'm working on and adding to on one external drive with the other (as easy as possible)?

I may be thinking this all wrong, so any suggestions besides just the 'how to?'

OS X :: Hard Drive For Macbook Pro And External Drives

Aug 14, 2010

So I just installed a larger hard drive in my macbook pro. As OSX was installing I decided to read reviews online (bought it in the store when I got the MBP). They're all really bad about using the drive in a MBP - [URL]. I'm installing the application software now and the hd is spining a lot and vibrating the case and making a lot more noise. I've read a few Seagate reviews and they're not much better for that size.

I want to install a huge hard drive because this is going to be my main computer for at least 8 months while I'm working away from home. Normally I have a desktop w/ a huge hard drive so I don't care what's on my laptop. Anyway, based on these reviews and how the drive has been feeling in the case, I think I might re-evaluate putting a larger drive in, and instead go with an external. I can fit all my photos and music on a 250, but I couldn't fit everything I store on my desktop on a 250.

So my first question is, is there a good, reliable 500gb or larger 5400rpm replacement hard drive for the mbp, that a lot of people like? And then the main question: I have a lot of large video files on my Windows box that are over 4gb, which is the FAT32 limit. When I transferred them from my old computer I had to rar them to smaller files and then un-rar them. This is quite annoying. If I'm gonna have an external drive, I'd like one that can be used on both windows and mac and support 4gb+ files..................

As soon as I select the drive to boot from when holding the Options key or from selecting the partition from Startup Disk in System Preferences, I get the do not enter icon(circle with the diagonal slash). MacBook Pro :: Not Loading External Drives On Start Up

Jun 28, 2012

I have two external hard drives attached to my MacBook Pro (running Lion) using a powered USB hub. What is the best procedure to use when shutting down the computer at the end of the night, and when turning it on the next morning. I didn't turn the computer off much when I used Snow Leopard so I can't really say that it has something to do with Lion, but I'm using Lion now and I am shutting down every night. Every morning when I turn the computer on the external hard drives don't load. I have to disconnect all the wires from the hub then first reconnect the hub to the computer, next the power to the hub, then the hard drives one at a time as they load. I would like to turn the computer on and have the external hard drives load automatically.

MacBook Pro :: Lacie Rugged XL 2TB External Hard Drives.

May 14, 2012

I recently purchased two Lacie Rugged hard drives, a 500GB for client use (meaning, it is given to clients to review raw footage and then given back to me where I then make edits.) The 500GB is calibrated at 50% Mac usage and 50% other and it has been worked out fine thus far. The other hard drrive is a 2TB Rugged XL Hard Drive  has not been used due to the pop up I get when clicking the LaCie Setup Assistant which reads "You can't open the application LaCie Setup Assisstant because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

1.) What does "You can't open the application LaCie Setup Assisstant because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." mean?

got a real basic question to ask and you're gonna think im an idiot for asking...I just bought a 320gb western digital elements hard drive and want to reformat it so that its compatible for both mac and pc's. i intend to format it as NTFS-3G as it would allow me to use it on the 2 platforms without having the 4GB file size restriction that fat32 has, anyway.....

when I go to reformat my external hard drive in disk utility, I see my external hard drive to the left, and there's a "sub" hard drive as a child of the external hd listed uppermost. just wandering which one of the two do i select before going to Erase>Windows NT filesystem (NTFS-3G)>erase? Do I select the uppermost drive and erase that or the lower one? or both

MacBook Pro :: External Drives - USB Vs FW800 5400 Vs 7200 Rpm - Benchmark Data

Apr 28, 2010

I recently picked up a couple of external drives, and decided to benchmark them to determine whether the interface and/or drive type made much of a difference. For those that don't want to read the details, here's the bottom line: If you're going to splurge on a FW800 interface, it's well worth fitting this with a 7200 rpm drive to maximize performance. Uncached sequential writes over FW800 were twice as fast on the 7200 rpm drive compared to the 5400 rpm. FW800 is a marked improvement over USB 2.0 as well. Full results are below. For background, when shopping for drives, I was interested in using the FW800 interface on the MBPs, for the simple reason it's rated almost twice as fast as USB 2.0. Some of the drives I was shopping for included 7200 rpm drives. My first thought was this was silly, since the interface limited the throughput to far-below the limits a 5400 rpm drive could produce, so why bother upgrading to 7200 rpm? Well, it turns out it does make a difference. I've got both a FW800 enclosure (G Drive Mini) and a USB 2.0 interface (Nexstar TX) as well as a 320GB 7200 rpm drive (Hitachi) and a 640GB 5400 rpm drive (Western Digital). So, I benchmarked both drives using both interfaces. Some interesting results! Turns out, the 7200 rpm drive does in fact dramatically improve performance in the FW800 interface. For sequential operations, Firewire has a dramatic improvement over USB 2.0; for random read/writes, drive speed seems to be a more important factor. And for large files, the combination of Firewire and 7200 rpm gives a pretty impressive throughput of almost 75MB/s. Full results are below. Note that the drive and interface are noted in the title bar for each drive.
