First, I am fully aware of the two plug-ins that have both of these features. SafariStand and Glims. I'd prefer not to use SafariStand, and I don't want to use Glims (buggy). I'm not here to debate their merits. The features I want are for Safari's download manager to close automatically, and for all links to automatically open in new tabs.
What I'm wondering is: are there any other plug-ins that offer these features for Safari 4 running Snow Leopard? Are there any tweaks to the system that don't involve plug-ins? As in, are there some terminal commands that can emulate these settings somehow?
1) I have a Macbook 2.2ghz (early 2008) running Leopard 10.5.8 which wont auto update (says it cant connect to internet even though it is - error says A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.) Network diagnostcs says that im connected to the intermet.
2) Also safari and chrome take ages to load pages when every time I open them (around 45 seconds) and then when they are running safari will randomly close and chrome will come up with the aw snap message for random pages (doesnt matter if its trying to loas flash or not).
Iv got Sophos anti virus which is saying theres no malware or viruses, also tried restartiing, re downloading chrome, deleteing my profile from chrome, exporting, deleting and then importing bookmarks and hardwiring the latop to the router.

I don't know if this is properly autofill or autocomplete - the two overlap too much anyway so I'm not wasting brain cells trying to come up with a distinction that makes sense to non-engineers. ANYWAY. Here's the point.Â
I'm on my bank website. My login is xtnjohnson -- just like here. Only I mistyped it once, so in autofill/autocomplete (whichever it is), I get a little drop-down showing two options: xtnjohnson or xtnjohson. Â
I want to delete only the second option. I recall at sometime finding a very simple way that involved highlighting the offending entry and hitting either control-delete, shift-delete, command-delete, or function-delete, only I can't seem to get any of those combinations to work. And of course I can't find the thread anymore.Â
The solution did *not* involve dealing with the autofill preferences in *any* way -- I've seen that option and it doesn't help (a) because there's no quick way to find the website where the problem is occurring (my list is long), (b) even when I go through my list, I don't see my bank's url, (c) the place for entering my login appears to be in something like JavaScript, so I'm not sure it'd be tracked in one of those lists, and (d) I don't know that this is properly an "autofill" problem anyway.Â

Safari 5, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
Since downloading version 5.1.7, when I click on the red button to close a window, it closes instantly -- even when the window contains numerous open tabs. The prior version always gave me a "Do you really want to close this window? You have X open tabs." message, which I'd like to restore. I looked in Preferences to no avail.

I remember before my reformat, that my auto-fill in worked, the ones where if you are ordering online and when you enter your first name, then all the other fields such as last name, phone number, email, address will get filled in, I was wondering how can I restore that function?
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust recently I took my 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2010 Model) to my local Apple Store. When I brought it there they fixed my problem, but in the mean time they had to completely delete and uninstall Safari and Google Chrome off of my laptop. Before the apple store, my Safari would always open pop-ups and links in a new tab, now they open up in a new window. how to change it so they open in new tabs? The reason I need this changed is I might have unecessary websites open, and they would just be taking up space.Â

After upgrading to Lion I see a check box at shutdown to refrain from opening web pages currently open in Safari. I did that, unchecked it, but they still open. How odd they would make this a opt out scenario - is there a way to make this permanent? I liked the old way where you could go into History and do it during a new session.

My unibody macbook that is about 3 months old is acting really weird. When i open 3 or more windows of safari and itunes it starts to lock up and act slugishly. When i open activity monitor it says is still has about 800mb of memory open. It is the base model with all stock components.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn the past couple of days I cannot open any windows in Safari. When I start the program up, I get the toolbar only. Nothing I do lets me open up a window. I even have to force quit the application sometimes to get it to close. I have reinstalled the program, removed the preferences, run Disk Warrior and Disk Utility with no luck. As a result, I have to use Firefox to do my browsing.Has anyone had this problem? Is there a fix for this?

Whenever I launch Pages, the application opens pretty much all the documents I've worked on. I take care to close all the windows, hoping that they won't launch again next time I start the application, yet they do. I can't find a setting in the preferences or Settings to disable this behavior.Â

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe autofill of my safari is not working! It does not let me remove any remembered username or password, neither will it remember any new ones I typed in. It keeps poping up the dialog asking me if I want to remember the username and password or not, but it won't remember them even though I clicked yes.

I find the auto refresh of websites irritating. Sites even refresh while viewing an imbedded video, forcing you to restart the vid.

I'm not sure what I did but only on one specific page does Safari increase the font size. Going to zoom out makes it the way its meant to look but it doesn't stay permanent.

I could have sworn this was possible and I just can't remember how to do it. In Windows 7, the OS is able to resize the windows to where it splits the screen between the two open windows equally. I could have sworn OS X is able to do the same thing, but I can't remember. I have a lot of papers and careplans to right. Am I wrong or is this not possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my Adobe Reader and now I can't download and open pdf files anymore.
I tried going through the preferences in Reader, but it says that the setting is tied in with 'security administration' settings on Mac OS X.
I have not actually changed anything in the settings so am assuming that this is something to do with the most recent update to either Adobe Reader or OS X security.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI regularly export and save my Safari bookmarks in case I'm ever stuck having to use a different computer.Â
Now I've just thought - I have several forums where I never have to remember username and password as Safari remembers them for me. It would be very useful to export and back those up too. But, where are they held? My guess is ~/Library/Safari/Form Values. However, when I tried to confirm this by opening in TextEdit, it was in the form of unreadable symbols. Nevertheless, is that the file I need to backup?

I have noticed this little program called auto-complete pro that is now on my computer on Safari. Anytime I search for something on the internet, the auto-complete bar that is normally there is covered up by a separate one by autocomplete pro. It is a known malware program, that I found in my research, but most people have asked how to get rid of it on Firefox or windows, now Safari. I am running OS X snow leopard, I believe. I have looked under extensions, there is nothing there.Â
