I have my documents folder in my dock. But I don't like the view choices that are provided. I want my documents folder to open in finder automatically. I would prefer not to scroll down to find that option and click on it. Is there any way for my docs folder to automatically open in the finder when located in the dock?

Is there a way to put a folder in the Dock so that it just opens Finder instead of a stack? OS X won't let me drag it to the left side, nor can I find a option to make folders on the right open in Finder by default. I'm running Snow Leopard.

I know this question sounds obvious and there are a million threads on placing folders on the dock but my need is more specific:
I want to add a folder to the dock but when I click on that folder, I simply want it to open in finder. I don't want to click the folder and then view contents in in Grid or List view, I only want the finder to open with that folder's contents. Is this possible?

I've poured over these boards in hopes to finding a solution as to why my dashboard won't open. It literally stopped working mid day, one day when I went to return to get a number off of my sticky note in my dashboard. I have tried posting the different lists from my preferences page, however, am unable to get the docments to actually drag to my desktop. I'm not sure if there are any other solutions, but was hoping to find a quick fix as opposed to traveling 2 hours to the nearest genius bar. Any help would be awesome!!

Here's an interesting one for all you intelegent people out there. Â
I have a 2011 iMac running Lion. I have a USB harddrive connected which stores digial versions of all my DVDs so that I can stream them to my AppleTV. Has no issues with it before now. A moment ago my Mac crashed and had to be restarted by holding down the button at the back (first time ever!!). When i turned the thing back on, the drive didn't mount so I went into disk utility and repaired the drive which resulted in it mounting. Â
Here lies the problem, I can access files on my drive in every other folder but the Movies on. See the below video. [URL]
have I lost my 660gb+ collection of movies?Â

its frustrating me that my finder /folder windows always open the same/wrong way. (at least not how i want them to.) i want them to open in list view, with name column first-- and i want that column width x -- then size column next, width y -- etc but every time i open a new window that has yet to be told what to do, it always starts in icon view with no idea how wide i want the columns once i switch it to List. this is a big deal for me because i create a lot of new folders similarly, i'm amazed at how buggy icon-grids can be in osx i find when i have a folder window open a lot-- moving new icons in and out -- the grid suddenly moves and now the icons that've been sitting there for a while are now suddenly confused and out of the new grid.
the one NEW icon that reset the grid layout feels it's on the grid, but then i have to move all the others -- sometimes when i do this, the folder window FLIPS OUT and shoots the icon way off to the left, etc, throwing off my meticulously sized window and making me replace ALL the icons on the grid.

New folders do not open empty but have contents from a subfolder of finder. I also had an empty folder on desktop so I renamed it & opened it only to find the same content.Â

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.
So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.
I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

As of an hour ago, my Dock (located at the bottom of the screen) does not pop up automatically when I scroll the cursor down to the bottom of the screen. I need to click on it. The happens no matter where I place the Dock. The auto hide and show dock option is definitely selected. I've noticed some complaints online about Mavericks and the Dock, however I've had Mavericks installed for at least 4 months and this is the first issue I've had with the Dock. Could this be a virus?Â
How do I get this to work the way it's supposed to?

I found my dock is gone. When I moved my pointer over the edge of screen where the dock was, the dock does not show up. I went to the Dock preference, it seems that the option "Automatically hidd and show the Dock" is chosen. I turned it off. It shows no difference. And I went to the Dock preference again, the Option is still chosen. And the Mac->Dock-> Turn Hiding Off is not functional. And also the hot key combination. Now I have to went to the lunchpad to see my dock and all my applications. It is really annoying.

I'm relatively new to OS X and this is probably an easy question for most...
When I mount a DVD movie image, finder is auto opened for that image and I see the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.
Is there a way to NOT have that finder window auto pop up every time?

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

When I import pictures from my camera, preview and finder automatically rotate them right-side up. Cool feature. However, when I go to send them via mail, they're not rotated. How do I turn off this feature so when a picture, it is what it is.

When view folder through finder and bumping up the size of the icons it makes the window wider so I need to use the horizontal scroll bar to see all the items. This really does not make much sense and I would rather have what it does in iPhoto, the images get bigger and it just pumps the list down (makes the vertical scroll longer etc.). I hope this makes sense, I can not seem to find a setting to change it however.

1: I can't seem to find a way to disable folders from auto-arranging themselves. I want to organize some of my folders randomly but I can only seem to arrange them by Name, Date, Label, etc. Some direction would be helpful, as I haven't used anything but Windows until now.
2: In Windows I had System Clean-Up and System Defrag to help maintain and keep my system organized/clean. Does OS X have similar programs or is there any other type of program Mac has for users maintain their system?

One of the best things I ever did was to setup a folder in my email that auto empties itself after 90 days. its great to use as a holding place for emails that I need to hold onto for a short period of time, but then want to make go away. shipping confirmations are a great example.Â
I'm interested in doing the same thing with a desktop folder. I know that time machine and what not gives me recovery options for things I delete, but this is a bit different. This is for items that I want to delete, just not right now. What I'd like it to do is delete items after they've been in the folder for some specified period of time, like 60 or 90 days.
