Jun 24, 2008I was recently given a non working G5 dual 2.5ghz machine. It is a quad core machine with the Delphi liquid cooling system. After some investigating I found it had a coolant leak. All the fans and lights come on as well as the bootup �chime�. I think (hoping) that the motherboard and power supply are still good. My question is this:
Can I use different processors on this motherboard? Lets say a dual 2.5ghz non-quad core processor assembly. Am I making sense? I am very new to the Mac world and would appreciate any help on this issue.

Nov 7, 2007I updated my G3 today to 10.3 finally and everything was working great until I updated software to 10.3.9 now my wireless isn't detecting any signals while it was working before the update. I'm thinking a driver was broken any ideas. It's a linksys wireless adapter I do believe.

Jul 8, 2008My computer crashed yesterday, and when I reboot, it took forever to restart, then crashed a couple more times. I tried a disk repair from the install CD disk utilities, but after an hour or so, it said disk couldn't repair (I think it repaired things like the B-tree and directories). Now it takes 10mins+ to boot, and apps that used to launch right away, take a long time. There's a lag as I type this in now. It's a dual 2ghz PowerPC G5, 3gigs of ram, running on tiger 10.4.11.

Nov 24, 2010I have Powermac G4 AGP (M7628LL/A) that has the AGP slot without the 'power-supplying' tab at the front of the slot. Therefore my NVIDIA GeForce2 MX video card (ADC/VGA) will only enable me to use the VGA outlet, and not the ADC. I have two Studio Display Monitors (M7649) and cannot use them.
I need to know (1) What other monitors will work with this G4 (in case I cannot fulfill #2), and most importantly (2) Which motherboard can I replace this one with that will enable me to use the video card in it's fullest?

Jul 26, 2007I bought 4 G4 towers of eBay for �85.. none have Hdd's so havent tried them out yet (two also have no graphic cards) I got a mix of ram size and speed (pc100/pc133) however thats not my question
Next to the ram slots theres a red light that comes on, is this normal? I've tried to do some research on it and some people say it is, others say it isnt.
I plan to sell them off again on ebay but I did it mainly as a project to keep the G4's alive. Any suggestions on graphic cards (cheap ones too)?

Sep 15, 2007I'm looking into replacing a motherboard on my newphews iBook G4. It's an early 2004 Series. I'm wondering if these Ibooks have interchangable motherboards, i.e. 1.0ghz vs 1.2ghz, 12inch screen vs the 14inch screen. I've done much work on IBM compatible laptops and these interchange pretty easily...but these MAC's are all new to me. I'm looking to get a busted up one off ebay and replace it for him for pretty cheap...

We're in the UK, which is Region 2 for DVD's.Somehow (probably by accidentally playing a Region 1 disc) the drive is stuck on region 1, and refuses to be changed to region 2.When I click on "Set region now", I get the attached error message. When I click on OK, the region 2 DVD gets ejected.How can I set the G4 so as it will play region 2 DVD's again?

Apr 18, 2010I need some help/suggestions as to why my G5 tower won't connect to a wireless network. I recently moved into a guest house with free wireless internet. My landlord gave me the password to tap in, and it works great on my netbook, which is what I am using to post this entry. It also works with my iPod Touch. However, my G5 times out every time I try. It recognizes the network and when I type in the password, it tries to join it and after a few moments it says "connection timed out"
Why is this happening? I'm up to date on software/hardware updates. I've even tried shutting down my netbook to see if that was the reason it wasn't connecting, but nope. Still doesn't connect.I like my netbook and internet browsing is speedy on it but I need my desktop for most of my work and internet productivity.

May 19, 2010Have a Power Mac G4 MDD - Apple genius bar looked at it and told me probably need a new power supply (shutting down at will and having trouble powering up but before that the computer was running well) and I'm not sure if I should get a used or new one on ebay or if you have a better idea. Can't afford a whole new system so want to resurrect this one.

Mar 7, 2008Recently I didn't do my research, and I purchased a Quicksilver power supply to put on a Gigabit machine. I noticed it had four extra pins which look like some of the ones they use to power processors in some PCs (tho I've come to find this is for the ADC port). I dug a little deeper (Googled "powermac_g4.pdf") and found out that some of the pins have differences between the Gigabit PS and the Quicksilver PS.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? Will the PS work without any wirecutting or do I need to get a new one?
PowerPC :: Motherboard Removal / Replacement - Any Docs To Guide
Oct 2, 2009I have a replacement motherboard (G4 MDD 1.25 dual) coming in and even though I have a very talented and technical friend coming by to help, it'd sure be nice to have some instructions on removing the current motherboard and the subsequent install of the newer one. Mine is having kernel panics about 98% of the time on attempted startups and I've tried (along with the Apple Store Genius Bar) everything I know how to do or have Googled and read. I think it's perhaps a USB bus issue.
I did manage to get it to boot from the Apple Hardware Test and everything passed. And, one of the USB connectors on the back of the machine is damaged, so I figure a complete motherboard swap should eliminate all possibilities except for maybe the CPU which seemed to pass. So back to the original query. Are there docs somewhere to guide one in the removal of the motherboard? I run a recording studio with this machine and I'm dead in the water! I am looking into either a new MacIntel or possibly a used G5 to replace it with.

Jun 23, 2009Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

Nov 17, 2006While taking apart ibook to replace harddrive on grapghite 466 , I ran into trouble. In taking out the backlight cable, the whole plastic receptor (little white plasatic at J4) on the motherboard came off as well. This is a little part (1/4 x 1/8inch). I can't tell if it was soldered on or just slips on the motheboard since tiny bits of plastic broke off. Can someone tell me if/how this can be repaired.

PowerPC :: Sticking Powerbook Trackpad Button?
Dec 28, 2005I don't know if anyone else has ever had this problem, but it's driving me nutts. The trackpad button has done this once before where it would be real loud when you click it. There's a lot of play in it and sometimes clicks twice but only the second click registers... it's hard to explain.
The first time this happened it went awhile after a days use. However, now it's doing it again and it's been a few days now and it's so anoying!

Jul 19, 2006Well as the title says, my latch button on my 12" powerbook g4 1.33 is stuck in, and i have no idea how to get this thing fixed. It all started with a trip to the apple store to get my optical drive replaced because it was "eating" DVDs. When they sent it back to me, the report said they had replaced the bottom case, and within a week the button would get stuck in a crooked position so that the latch does not catch. I couldnt afford to give it to apple for another week because spring break was now over, so i just dealt with it until yesterday when i hauled it back to the apple store.
The genius there was like "ha! thats strange" and filled out the paperwork, and then can't get it to show up as a free fix because they won't replace lowercases without it being user repair. The head genius then came over, i explained my problem, and he said there was nothing he could do to help me, and then they walked over to the next customer.
