I've got a powermac G5 dual 2ghz and 3 gigs of RAM that has a dead logic board. I don't really want to pay the $900 to have it replaced, so I'm thinking about just parting out the rest of the machine.
View 1 RepliesSomeone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI updated my G3 today to 10.3 finally and everything was working great until I updated software to 10.3.9 now my wireless isn't detecting any signals while it was working before the update. I'm thinking a driver was broken any ideas. It's a linksys wireless adapter I do believe.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer crashed yesterday, and when I reboot, it took forever to restart, then crashed a couple more times. I tried a disk repair from the install CD disk utilities, but after an hour or so, it said disk couldn't repair (I think it repaired things like the B-tree and directories). Now it takes 10mins+ to boot, and apps that used to launch right away, take a long time. There's a lag as I type this in now. It's a dual 2ghz PowerPC G5, 3gigs of ram, running on tiger 10.4.11.

We're in the UK, which is Region 2 for DVD's.Somehow (probably by accidentally playing a Region 1 disc) the drive is stuck on region 1, and refuses to be changed to region 2.When I click on "Set region now", I get the attached error message. When I click on OK, the region 2 DVD gets ejected.How can I set the G4 so as it will play region 2 DVD's again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need some help/suggestions as to why my G5 tower won't connect to a wireless network. I recently moved into a guest house with free wireless internet. My landlord gave me the password to tap in, and it works great on my netbook, which is what I am using to post this entry. It also works with my iPod Touch. However, my G5 times out every time I try. It recognizes the network and when I type in the password, it tries to join it and after a few moments it says "connection timed out"
Why is this happening? I'm up to date on software/hardware updates. I've even tried shutting down my netbook to see if that was the reason it wasn't connecting, but nope. Still doesn't connect.I like my netbook and internet browsing is speedy on it but I need my desktop for most of my work and internet productivity.
Have a Power Mac G4 MDD - Apple genius bar looked at it and told me probably need a new power supply (shutting down at will and having trouble powering up but before that the computer was running well) and I'm not sure if I should get a used or new one on ebay or if you have a better idea. Can't afford a whole new system so want to resurrect this one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had this quad g5 (dualcore 2.5ghz X 2) laying around for about a year that I purchased for $100 without a hard drive, super drive or a power cord. I was told that it was non working in the manner that ONE of the dual core cpu's had gone bad. I will be receiving my power cord this week to make sure that it still powers on but what the problem is.
My question is: If only one of the cpu's are bad, what is the part number I will be looking at? I am not wanting to spend a fortune on this to fix it, but If I do get it working I would like to drop 8-16gb ram in it, and setup a raid with 2 raptors.
My powerbook G4 aluminum was dropped about 18 inches. The display is now hosed. Thus far I have found *nothing* wrong with the laptop except for the internal display only shows gray horizontal lines with black snow/static intermixed (still in horizontal lines).
What I'm thinking is that the display is probably actually fine and there is some little logic board in the display casing that is bad.
Here is what I've proven:
1. external monitor still works fine (means vid card is fine?)
2. swapped internal displays with another powerbook and was fully functional (means it's something in my display casing or my display itself)
3. backlight works fine (on my munged display)
4. i can see movement in the grayness when i move the mouse pointer around almost like the pointer was as wide as the screen and 90% translucent (i.e. there is a horizontal shaded bar i can move up and down with the trackpad)
I've already thought about upgrading to the 1440x960 display and being done with it. But then I started thinking it is probably a $40-50 part if I could just narrow it down.... And that would be the smart thing, rather than spending $300+
I bought a second hand iMac G3 off eBay for a pretty good deal, and am trying to figure out where the buzzing is coming from.
It doesn't come with any CDs so I don't think I can do a hard wear test, but I've noticed it is happening even when the display is off, and is in sleep (although it gets less audible in sleep).
Another thing I noticed is that in OS X it will stop after a while of not using it, despite the screen being on and still showing the image, is this the hard drive stopping? When I go and touch a key or move the mouse it starts again.
I came across a powerbook g4 (dvi, 15 inches, 800mhz, 512mbs, airport card, dvd-rom + cd-rw, after market battery never used and after market ac adapter)) sold "as is" on craig's list. I picked it up for $50. It had everything but the hdd. The first time i plugged it (without hdd) I got the flashing ?. I swapped in another hdd and all I would would get the apple chime followed three soft beeps (nothing on the screen). And then eventually, I would power it on and the only sign of life I would get is the caps lock light on, and the num lock light only if I hit F5 (again nothing on the screen). If i let the powerbook sit without the battery for a while, then I would get the apple chime again but then the power cut out right away. This happens with the adaptor or the battery only which leads me to believe it's not the dc-in board. I have tried different ram, disconnected the airport card, disconnected the cd player. I have tried resetting the PMU and every key combination to reset the PRAM (it never seemed to make a difference).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.
Looking to buy a used G5. Dude said he upgraded a G5 1.8 to a Dual 2.0... Is that even possible and if so what limitations or problems could the machine have. Said he replaced the whole motherboard.

I did search on this but couldn't find anything specific, but I am considering adding a second 23" Apple Cinema Display to my set-up for a dual monitor workstation.
I have the ATI Radeon 9600 video card with two DVI ports. I have my 20" plugged in to port 1 and it's running at 1680x1050 resolution (the highest). When I add the second monitor, will BOTH monitors be able to run at their highest resolutions? Or do I need to add another video card?
I had heard rumor that resolutions are a trade-off: if your card is split between two monitors, then the resolution splits, true?
If I can run both at the highest res, then I'll pull the trigger and get the extra monitor. I'm assuming there's someone here who has done the exact same thing?
G4 won't boot. No startup chime. Power button light goes off right after I power it on. Fans go on and soon switch to high / fast mode.
Tried everything imaginable -- removing all cards, RAM swapping, PMU reset, bought a new 3.6v PMU battery... everything on this forum (I think) except buying a new power supply which I'm trying to avoid.
I listed my Dual 2GHz G5 on ebay and hope to sell it. In the event I can't, would it make a good server if I throw Mac OS X Server on it? Would a server be of any benefit since my network consists of my Mac Pro, Mac Book,a nd Xbox 360?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI did a thread search and could find lots of instances of an ibook not seeing or using the battery, but I seem to have the opposite problem. I have an ibook g3 700mhz (dual usb). It will only boot and run off the battery. It will not boot or run if it is only plugged in (dead battery or no battery = no running or booting). When plugged into a 45W white charger (that works on other ibooks of the same ilk), it will be green without battery and orange when the battery is in. It will not charge a battery. I've tried:
two other dc-in boards and cables known to work in other ibooks
two different batteries (that charge in another machine)
PMU reset (the light on the charger changes to green for 3 seconds, seemingly indicating the reset was done correctly)
for fun I put in a hard drive that worked in another machine and added ram that works in another machine all to no avail. What the heck is going on?
