I have just got an old 2004 G5 and thrown a brand new hard drive in it. When i tried to install leopard (which I'm told would be the best operating system to use) it comes up with a blank blue screen!
View 14 RepliesI bought a Guardian MAXimus hard drive and it seemed to be working fine for the past few weeks. Now all of sudden when starting my Imac 27 I7 the grey screen takes a long time then it get stuck on the blue screen and stays like that. Some times after being on the blue screen it will goto the main page but it takes 3-5 min if it does. When it gets stuck, if I unplug the firewire from the back of the computer from the hard drive it boots up. Any thoughts, their tech support wants me to send the unit back with out doing any testing at home to see what the problem is, seems like a pain in the butt.
View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalled a new harddrive into my 2005 mac mini to replace 40 gb harddrive with hitachi 80 gb harddrive. When installing operating system from original osx two-disc set, the box which asks to choose which destination to install to is blank, and does not show any icon onto which to choose. Is this is defect in the disc? The computer recognizes that there is a new harddrive, so I know I installed it properly.

I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbook pro.

so i go to turn my imac on tonight and it makes the normal noise when it always turns on but the screen stays blank(light blue)....after about 2 minutes this little picture of a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen. it keeps making this clicking noise as well. ive tried unplugging everything and restarting it here is a pic of what the thing that pop ups looks like [URL]

I am having problem with starting up my new MBP, would really appreciate if you could help me out.
Hardware:
1. Current rev of MBP 15' 2.53 Ghz
2. HITACHI Travelstar HD20500 IDK/7K 500GB 7200 RPM
What happened is that I had this Hitachi drive in my PC laptop running Windows 7. Last night I got my MBP and decided to put that Hitachi drive in macbook, then format it and install OS X. Once i put the hard drive in and tried to start MBP i kept getting Windows Recovery Screen because MBP was trying to boot from hard drive directly. Since this is my first ever Mac I didn't know what key to press to be able to choose from DVD. On one of the attempts I actually hit "Proceed Windows normally" and it gave me blue fatal screen saying it was not possible...........
New to Mac computers. When trying to open computer after being in sleep mode, I clicked the mouse to open the password screen, & a blank blue/black screen appeared & the mouse timer( colored circle) appeared, as if to be waiting. I had to unplug the computer to reboot it. This has happened twice in 2 days.

I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?
Why is the harddrive shutting down by itself? I need a hard shut down and restart of the Mac then. Why is that? How to cope?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a HITACHI touro desk 3TB external hard dive connected to my iMac OS X version 10.6.8 Every time i start up the system it stays on a grey screen until I unplug the usb of the external hard drive then the system boots up normally. I have tried connecting different usb cables, plug in to different usb ports, and nothing works. I have other external hard drives and they don't give me any problems. is a pain plugging and unplugging the usb cable.

I restarted my mac this morning after the time was broken (as far as I know, I cannot manually change it). When it booted, it booted normally. It logged me in (I am automatically logged in) then it threw errors at me. The 2 errors were from Steam and Skype, but none from the mac itself. Steam error: " Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xbfffdea4) failed with error 1: Failed create pipe: 28". I forgot to record the skype error, but it was something to do with it not being able to find a file. At this point, the background is blue, I can see the top bar but not the dock. I then close Steam and Skype windows and the bar disappears leaving me with nothing. A blank blue screen. The dock wont come up.
I would take this to support, but they want a serial code that i cannot access because its not on the hardware and I cant access 'About this Mac" because it disappears.

My Imac has been acting up. When I restart the mac it takes forever to start up. It goes to the blue and stays there for several minutes and then will finally boot up. I am running Leopard on an Intel 17 in imac.

I tried to reinstall Leopard onto a Macbook but it wouldn't let me because I had to do a GUID partition on the external hard drive. I did that, put the DMG back onto the external drive and went to install it. I went to Startup Disk under System Prefences but my hard drive isn't showing up.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using my Mac (Macbook Pro 15" screen) and tried opening a file in GarageBand, at which point a warning message came up saying something about a midi file and something not being allowed, and then froze, resulting in me having to switch the computer off from the power button and restarting (Sadly I didnt realise that this would be the start of a whole host of problems and didnt make a note of the warning message). After rebooting I got the 'stuck on the blue screen with the Apple logo and infinitly spinning wheel' problem that i've seen in a few posts. having tried numerous suggestions posted with no change I ended up taking it to the genius section of an Apple store. When i got it back they said that it may have been a corrupted file, and that they re-installed and reset the starting programs (Something along those lines, I cant quite remember). I can now get onto the computer and use it, though some new problems have arisen.......

my white macbooks hard drive broke along with my cd drive. I purchased a new hard drive and put it in but now I have no way to install Leopard since my cd drive is broke.I do understand the best way would be to buy an external CD drive and use that but I would rather not waste all that money on one use.I do have a firewire cable and my friend has a white macbook. I've heard that you can boot using another computer and use there cd drive via firewire by holding "T" or whatever.

I shut down the computer and unplugged everything but now when I turn the computer back on it shows my home screen and I can see the mouse icon moving around but I am unable to 'click" on any of my programs and get a response.

I think I'm going to format my hard drive to delete everything from it and start fresh with leopard. I already have leopard installed, but I think I should just format my hard drive (after backing up what I truly need like my music and other files) and then just install leopard.
Question, I have read that I go to disk utility to do this (format and install leopard), is this correct? If so, what else do I need to know before I do this?
When installing Snow Leopard, will it erase my hard drive and force me to start all over or will it just update the software and keep everything the way it is on my Mac now?

I had this problem before. Erased the hard drive and then reinstalled everything. I made it through it but I think I may have done it wrong. Anyways the computer worked good till the other day. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it is doing it again.
Do I need to start with the install disk 1 that came with the computer and install disk 2, then install snow leopard? Or can is there a faster route of doing this?
Ok guys, so here is the story, i just bought the 500 GB Blue Scorpio, ran the Time Machine back up on an external hard drive and wanted to install the 500 GB on my macbook, inserted the Mac OS CD and in the section where it asks where you want to install the Mac OS, i didnt see anything it was blank and it didnt give any options or anything.so now i installed the old hard drive and i am using that one, what am i supposed to do ?
I'm about at my wits end. I would say I have a harddisk failure, but it passes every diagnostic I can throw at the thing. My problem is that I erased the main drive in my mac (been booting from an external hd) and I'm trying to install Leopard on this drive. The Leopard install starts, I'm able to choose the disk, and tell it to erase and install (or just install after erasing the disk externally). The installer starts, gets about 30-40 minutes in and then just plain stops because some package or other (seems to be different every time) is corrupt. My only option is to reboot and try again. I've done it three times now and am starting to feel rather stupid. Is there a known issue here that anyone can direct me at? I didn't see anything snarfing around the forums, but that doesn't mean I could've just plain missed it. I've just finished running tech tool pro 4 hardware tests (drive controller, etc.), surface scan, disk utilities erase and verify hoping it would tell me if there is a disk problem brewing. So far all the tests show green. I decided to try and hit the thing with something that writes to every imaginable space on the disk, so I ran erase free space from disk utilities. I plan on trying again after that finishes.
