I bought a G3 imac 600 from an auction. no cd's came with it. it has software on it with multiple user logins. I can only login to one user who didn't use a password but cannot login as the admin.
it is running os 9.2.2 and I would like to upgrade to osx.
I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA couple of nights ago I set my iMac G3 (Blueberry) to stop automatic login at start up and put it to sleep. I did this because I didn't want my kids on the web in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. When morning comes, the computer is off. I try to start it but it won't turn over. When I push the on button, the button flashes on for a split second and I hear the crackle of static as if the computer is starting, but nothing happens after that. I tried plugging and unplugging the computer, but nothing helps.
It's like a car that won't turn over.
I just logged in to my system after restarting and immediately, before opening anything (other than Finder), was presented with a request for admin credentials, I think saying something about a change to my login preferences, which didn't make a lot of sense to me.
Any idea what would cause this, or how to make sense of the logs to see what exactly prompted it?
I installed Flash and Adium on this new machine this morning - would this have anything to do with it? I'm unaccustomed to getting the security prompt at unexpected times and now very nervous.
I am unable to log in to my IMac. When I try and log in to the Administrator account (my only account) it brings up a dialog box that says "You are unable to log in to the user account (user name) at this time with and OK button. Before this I was performing the Secure Empty Trash feature which froze on me. I tried exiting it out and logging out but was unable to. So I held the power button on the side of my IMac till it shut down. That is when this problem occurred.

I can not login to admin account with right password but I can login to user account. From user account I get the chance to reset password to admin account. After Logoff it's allowing me to log in to admin account with all data access . Problem is repeated after restarting Macbook pro -saying password to admin is incorrect. I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with logging into my main account, I have 10.6.8, when I login to my main account it will either just be blue or maybe show the background image then will return to the login screen, I could access my guest account fine, so I created a new admin account and used console to grab the log when I tried to log into my original account.

Alright, I FINALLY got windows on my mac and am very proud of myself. However, I am encountering what I hope is a final problem.
I want to log into Windows as an admin, so when it starts up I hit F8. The screen goes black and gives me a bunch of options, I choose "Safe Mode". Everything so far works like it should. But then the log screen appears with two options: Admin and my regular user. Obviously I want admin, but my keyboard and mouse are utterly nonresponsive , even the little caps light won't turn on. This means I'm stuck there, staring at what I want to click but unable to do so. The only button that works is the power button.
Anyone else run into this? More importantly, anyone know how to fix it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and Today when I logged in, it just froze on the apple OS X background. I waited 2 minutes, and nothing happened. It was weird because it's the first time it happened. Anyway, I turned the iMac off and re-tried. It did the exact same thing. So I turned it off, unplugged everything, waited around a minute, plugged it all back in, and it worked fine.
But yeah, just trying to work out why it would do that... because this is going to my brother and I don't want it to just crash when I give it to him.
I have an old iMac Rev A (or B?) and it is constantly freezing. It freezes in OS 8, 9, and 10.3.. but most frustrating is that it also freezes while trying to install an OS. So right now it does not have an OS installed because of that. It will not boot up to my OS 9.1 disc.. but it will boot up to it's original 8.5 disc and a 10.3 disc.. However it always freezes near the beginning of the install process (often before it even writes to the HDD). I tried taking out the old RAM and leaving it with just the one (new) 256MB chip and that didn't work.
It was freezing before with only the old RAM so. I guess it's not the RAM. I have an identical iMac that doesn't choke on anything (never freezes) and it only has 96MB of RAM. I don't know what else I can do. I'm trying to use XPostFacto to put 10.4 on this thing (it's possible, I want to try it out at least) but it won't get through the first OS install and if it does, it won't get through the second (10.4). Even more frustrating is that I don't have any diagnostic software such as the Apple Hardware Test because the original iMac didn't come with any.
I've got a flat panel G4 iMac, currently running 10.3.9. I'm having ongoing problems: frequent kernel panics, weird things happening to the display (display breaks up into a jumble of lines on occasion). I've done the usual troubleshooting: disk utility, apple hardware test, reboot in Safe. I want to try reinstalling the OS to see if this helps.
Problem: I don't have the install discs for OS 10.3.9 - about a year ago the logic board was replaced and I had the service swap in a new hard drive at that time and they loaded 10.3.9 when they did this. I don't want to buy 10.4 at this point - with Leopard coming out soon from what I understand, also want to make sure I can get the computer running properly again before I throw any more money at it. I've tried using borrowed discs to install 10.4, but I keep getting a message stating: "you cannot install this software on this computer". This has happened with 3 different borrowed install discs. Two of the borrowed discs were for iBooks, one was for a G5 iMac.
so i want to install tiger on my G3 600 mhz 256 mb RAM imac that has no dvd drive.i looked around the net and found that apple used to accept tiger DVD's and exchange them for CD's for a 10$ fee but thats no longer the case....
i also found that i could install tiger from another mac with a DVD drive using firewire disk mode...so i looked around my things and found an old firewire cable and hooked both machines up (imac and my mbp) and restarted the imac holding down the t key and so then the firewire symbol shows up on the imacs screen...well from what i understand the imac's HD is supposed to show up on my mbp desktop...this never happens.And ive tried it multiple times...so i dont know what the problem is..and ive tried it using OS 9 and 10.0 the OS's the machine came with..
im wondering is it possible to install a hitatchi 1tb drive in my imac g5 because i think read somewhere that the hitatchi 750gb drive wasnt 1,5gbs Compatable i dont know if this applies to the 1tb drive
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought the new 24" iMac and I looked at the backup discs and they said it could install OSX Tiger. I also have an old iBook G4 I got my moms friend who moved. I know the iBook could handle 10.4 as it has 10.3.9 now but what I was wondering was. If I could install the OS on the iBook from the iMac backup discs. I but the disc in the iBook and it wanted me to restart to begin the installation of OSX but I quickly backed out. Do you guys think If I proceed with the installation it will install smoothly or, should I just forget about it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been in and out of these forums since last December. I bought my first MacBook and I couldn't be happier. Best computer ever! I am never going back to PC, and I'm trying to convert the rest of my family. I am starting with the most difficult hill to climb first, my father. He just barely learned how to download music and burn CDs this year. My mom just needs to send emails and pay bills online. So for fathers day, I bought my dad a used show white iMac G3. I can't believe how fast it is. He thought it came from space, but was excited. He's not tech savvy in any way, but he is trying and is slowly learning. I'm trying to get it as close to what he's use to, and there is the problem. He knows what FireFox looks and feels like, but I cannot install it. I download the program, "install" it, but I can't load it up. I click on the icon and it bounces up and down in the dock and then fades away. Its like the feeling you get when your car is about to start and dies down. I have no idea what to do. I'm only 7+ months into Mac's, so I could be missing something simple...maybe? I've check the permissions on firefox and allowed everyone to read/write but nothing I can think of anything else. Also, I've been searching and searching for this one, but I have no idea how to word it and I'm coming up nothing. Since I can't run firefox, I'm teaching the old man to use safari. He could eventually learn it, but even I prefer firefox. That's another story for another time. Any ways, the problem with Safari on his G3, even after every possible update (I think), every layout on every page is totally off. When I click on Safari and the apple home page comes up, some icons are cut in half, the bottom bar with the list of links is towards the middle, and side bars are just messed up. Pages like craigslist come up with a harsh fully aligned left layout. Other pages have words stacked on other words so its impossible to make out whats going on. My mom was going crazy because she couldn't figure out how to log out of her bank account (kinda funny). I've tried Displays on the iMac, I've tried View on Safari, messing with text size, ect, nothing has helped me. I don't know what to do here either.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI just bought a pre-owned macbook off of ebay. This is my second mac, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. Here's my problem: When I first booted it up, it never took me through the whole "new owner registration" screen that you would see on a brand new macbook, it just went straight to the desktop. I went in and changed the Admin name and info etc manually, but when the computer is shut down and booted back up, it has my name listed on the login screen, but that little tiny title above it that says "(Owner)'s Mac" still says the old owners name! Furthermore, when i access mac programs such as Front row, it still says his name also.
So my question is, where do I go to change this? Do I need to go through the whole new owner registration screen manually, and if so, will I lose all of my work that's stored on my HD?
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 running version 10.5.8. I am able to login to everything and set my username as the administrator, but I can not set a password for it, if i try to input a password or change the password I get an error message saying I have input an incorrect password. When I purchased the computer everything was blank except for the user name was set as mac user, as I said I was able to change the username but not the password.

I notice every program that's installed just about on the user account is available in the admin account. What if a program is causing the issue? Wouldn't the admin account have the possibility of being hosed as well? Is there a way to stop this easily?
View 8 Replies View RelatedFirst timer here. I bought a used G4 MDD 1.25 dual FW800 recently. Was pre-loaded with 10.5.6. I thought that I would add a hard drive. After attempting to format, it rebooted to a gray screen with a MacMonitor icon. If I hit "option", I can get it to progress to a blue screen w/ padlock asking for a password. I only remember setting a user password. I believe this is asking for an admin password.
So, I thought that I'd get the 10.5.6 Install disk to reset the password. I can't seem to boot from the Install disk! I've tried holding down the "c" key at startup, (also the "option" key). No avail.
Can I install iWork without the administrator's password?
I'm installing iWork (I have the Family pack) on a family member's computer. Nothing sinister here.
She left the computer here so I could install it while she attended a Teacher Conference and I told her I would have it done when she returned.
Well, she didn't give me her password, she's not answering her cell phone and her husband has no clue. Ever.
I was running my iMac just in admin, which I know is frowned upon but that's the way I had it. I had a corrupt preferences file and I couldn't save any of my passwords etc Finally created a new user and reinstalled everything and it works fine. Had to replace all my passwords for my apps etc but other than that not that big a deal.
Question is can I now delete the other user now that I have a new admin login?:
It is just taking up storage space with a user which is corrupted but I don't want to erase the data in that user and also delete all my data in the new user as well.
I have inherited my uncle's computers and I'm having problems logging into his iMac G5 20". I have the original Tiger Install DVD, I put it in, restart, pressing C, etc., but the install DVD doesn't run and I just end up at the login screen. He also had an iBook G4 and I used the same trick to change the admin password - it worked just fine. Does anyone know why pressing C isn't starting up the install disk? Its the original.
ALSO: I've read of a workaround using the single-user password reset option that goes as follows:
- start computer pressing Command-S
- sh /etc/rc
- password 'Uncle Paul'
- enter a new password twice
- reboot
I'm afraid to do it though, because I need to gain access to my uncle's files before I reinstall. My parents insist of getting all his pictures and stuff (he was also writing his autobiography.) Will doing the above Command-S measure mess with any of his files?
I have a 2007 imac which i want to restore/erase the hard drive so it's like its out the box. I have the orignial Install DVDs but when i put them in they won't run because i get the powerpc is no longer supported message. I upgraded to lion but no longer have the disk for it..Any Ideas how i can restore?
