I have a 12" powerbook that is running 10.2 and want to upgrade it to Tiger. The problem is that the DVD drive is broken so I can't pop in my copy and install. Is there any way for me to install it using a USB external hard drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my optical drive in my MBP will read single layer DVDs but not dual layers. I am currently running 10.5 and my end goal is to have 10.6 (snow leopard) on my MBP with a clean install. Problem is, my purchased copy of 10.6 can't be read by my MBP. Here is my thought process: 1st Option: Use the Remote Install OSX application to use another drive on my network. So I boot up the program on other macs in my house, restart my MBP while holding down the option key. Yet, my airport network never shows up on the white apple loading screen (just Macintosh HD). So I can't get the remote drive stuff to work.
2nd Option: Use an external HDD. Problem is is that I didn't know you have to have a blank partition for this. I have a 1TB WD External HDD with 18gigs free, but in order to make a partition, I would have to erase the drive first (am I correct on this?) I can't lose this data, and I don't have another external HDD. So is my only other HDD option to buy like a USB 16gig thumb drive (or really really cheap external), partition it with snow leopard dmg on it, and install with that?

Snow Leopard install disc
I'd like to get Remote Disc running on my laptop and install over the network (using my Win7 PC). I've done the terminal hack which is supposed to enable Remote Disc on MacBooks. However, Remote disc doesn't show up in my finder (not sure that 10.4.11 has a place for it to show). Does Remote disc work with Tiger-Macbooks? Or do you need Leopard? If Remote Disc won't work, can a Win7 PC install Snow Leopard via firewire to a Mac? If possible, I'd like to avoid buying an external DVD drive, as it appears Remote Disc will work in Snow Leopard. Don't have a firewire cable on me but I could buy one -- just want to be sure it will work before I waste the money.
My old macbook has a broken optical drive inside it. The one that came with it has quit working and the genius at the genius bar said it needed to be replaced. The genius said to get an external one online so I bought the Amazon basics external dvd drive. How to install it and get it to work.

My iBook has had a broken hard drive for a while now. I have tried loading a Linux live cd on it, but it's mostly useless because of having no storage. I want to be able to use it on the go. Is it possible that i could use a linux live usb, such as damn small linux, and use the memory on said flash drive instead of a hard drive? How would I go about doing this if I could. Keep in mind that it wont bother me that I won't have much storage space. I really only want to use it for web browsing on the go.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI had the brilliant idea of trying a clean install of OS X on my circa 2002 iBook. I had Tiger on there, but the iBook was quite sluggish and I was getting frustrated with the performance of the iBook on the only thing that I wanted it to use it for: the internet. So I thought that if I wiped the hard drive and installed OS X again, I could benefit from erasing an accumulation of junk on the iBook. (One thing to note is that the hard drive is actually from a clamshell iBook. The hard drive stopped working a few years ago, and I spent a weekend replacing the drive)
The combo drive has long since stopped working on the iBook, so I hooked up the iBook to my MacBook via firewire and erased the hard drive. But like an idiot I installed 10.5 instead of 10.4 and now the iBook only returns the folder with the question mark. I have not had any luck (either before the ill advised OS X install or before) with doing a remote install. I have the original disks that came with the iBook (10.1), but when I try to install them using the MacBook's drive it just tells me that I can't install it on my MacBook, which is not what I want to do.
im wondering is it possible to install a hitatchi 1tb drive in my imac g5 because i think read somewhere that the hitatchi 750gb drive wasnt 1,5gbs Compatable i dont know if this applies to the 1tb drive

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old PowerMac G4 7400 (450 Mhz) and I'd like to use it to replace an old Micron PC I'm using as a file server. My question is, what is the largest size HD I can install in it? I checked Mactracker and it said it only supported up to 128 GB per drive. But I didn't know if this was related to the OS at the time or whether it was a hardward limitation. If I'm running Tiger on it would it support a larger 500GB drive? If it is a hardware limitation I guess I could always add a couple external firewire drives. Let me know if this should have been posted in the "collectible forum".
View 4 Replies View RelatedI put my Leopard install DVD (DVD drive is down) onto a flash drive to install on my 12" PowerBook G4 1.5ghz but when it restarts it just boots back into Tiger. I attempted to reboot and hold option but the only boot choice is the HD. Even if I go to Preferences>Startup Disk there's no option to boot from the Flash Drive.

I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a PPC iBook G4 with 1.3 Ghz and 1 GB SDRAM that I bought new in 2006. I've never had a single problem with the machine, but it doesn't have a superdrive and the OS Tiger capabilities are limiting.
Last year I upgraded to Leopard with a .dmg via FW external drive and loved the interface, but with only a 40GB HD I deleted any app I didn't need. Over the summer I bought a new iMac, but I still need the laptop whenever I'm away from my desk. I tried erasing and reinstalling now that I don't have to keep much data on the drive...interested in getting back those non-essential apps. I've done it before with the exact same resources, but this time it's not working. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me what step I'm forgetting.
Here's what I've done:
1. Connected iBook to iMac in target mode via FW and erased/partitioned HD in Apple Partition Format.
2. Reinstalled Tiger on iBook from original disc.
3. Connected iBook to external drive via FW and restored .dmg to smaller partition on iBook.
4. Opened .cdr on smaller partition, saw the Leopard disc image, set the Leopard install disc as the startup disc in System Preferences. Hit restart button in System Preferences and got the little "not happeneing" noise.
5. Went to desktop and opened the Leopard installer disk image and pressed the install/restart button there. Reboot was slow and dark at first, but ultimately booted Tiger.
6. Went back to System Preferences, selected Leopard install disc as the startup disc again, locked the selection and restarted...booted Tiger again.
7. Tried these tactics again while holding option key and then S key at restart, but the second partition with the installer was never recognized. Tried from Safe Mode, only booted Tiger.
8. Then I tried connecting the external drive again and opened the .dmg, then .cdr from there. Again System Preferences recognized the installer, but it would not boot with the same variables as before.
9. I connected the iBook to the iMac in target disc mode again and ran disc utility, all good. Then I did same with external drive, all good. I made sure both drives and the install disc image were bootable. Tried the boot again from both, all bad.
10. I did a lot of reading on troubleshooting this process and thought it might be a permissions problem, that the installer was not executable. I did a terminal tutorial and managed to make the partitioned drive and disc image both owner enabled. Still the exact same results as when I started.
I have a g3 dual usb ibook that has a DVD/CD drive, 640 ram and a firewire port. I just bought a G4 800 mhz tower that has a gig of ram, but it does not have DVD drive (it's a cdrw only). My Ilife install disk is a DVD, is there anyway to use the DVD drive on my ibook to install software onto the G4 tower? Both devices have firewire but if possible I would like to use an ethernet cable connection between the two. I dont have the correct firewire cable(it's expensive).
A second question is i an os 10.3 on my ibook and 10.4 on my G4 tower. Is there a easy way to transfer all my files, settings, ect... from the ibook to the G4 tower? I don have the osx 10.4 install discs either (if that matters).
Could someone please tell me the name of the GPU and where I could buy it?

My keyboard is broken so i went and bought a microsoft wireless desktop for Mac.
Im trying to install the software and Installer requires the admin password which-obviously i cant type through my old nor new keyboard.
I am trying to set up an old macbook as a server and I am having a few problems getting the macbook to perform properly.
I know that one of the RAM slots are broken, should that effect the system if their is no RAM in that slot?
I get the occasional read/write error suggesting that their might be something wrong with the hard drive not sure what to do about that. I have zeroed out the HD twice as I herd that that figures out what memory blocks are still writable but it was of no help.
There is definitely something wrong and I need to test everything to make sure that it's working. I am running memtest as I speak. Is there anything I can do to check the performance of my HD?
The main problem I am having is that if I use software update, or try to install Snow Leopard the macbook reboots and sticks on the blue screen with a mouse. I have to reinstall the OS to get it to work again... this has happened a few times now. This also happens if I install a hardware demanding program such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and reboot.
Installation was easy, I used the ifixit guide. But - and I am still slapping myself for it - I broke the battery during installation.
Following the ifixit guide I removed the battery to have more room for the installation of the SSD. The battery came off very easily, but unfortunately with the socket from the motherboard still attached.
I have tried to reinstall it, but apparently the contact is to loose. It does not stick to the motherboard and I am wondering how Apple attached it in the first place.
My Macbook Air still works on AC - and the Runcore is a breeze - but it will not recognize the battery. That means my svelte MBA is no chained to my desk.
So I got a BW 350 new back in 1999 and immediately OCed. I tried OCing it to 450 and it didn't work. I tried 400mHz and everything worked fine, its been that way ever since.
The BW has served me very well and I have since maxed the RAM and put a Radeon 7000 GPU into it and was using it as a TV media computer. It was working ok/good and so I thought I'd try to OC it again to 450 to see if I could get it working and squeeze a bit more juice out of it. God what a stupid idea.
It wouldn't work at 450 so I set it back to 400, it wouldn't work!!! Even back at 350 it won't work. God I can't believe I did this. I don't have the original block of jumpers that came with the computer (I know what box its in, but just can't find it).
Would replacing all the jumpers give it a chance at life again?
i had applecare but they wouldn't cover it so the bill is 1300 to fix just the screen and labor. any other place i can go to to fix this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIts been going for a while now and finally the right channel of audio has fully cut out from the headphone jack. This is a huge bummer. I mean the laptops 3 years old so its not to bad. I mean its taken a beating over the years. Its just that I use it to listen to music and audio out for watching dvds, so its no good for that anymore. I have an external audio card but thats no good for when I am mobile and I use the laptop all over the place. Is there a way to fix this or would it need a whole logic board replacement? Can I use a audio card that fits into those card slots on the left hand side of the Powerbook. What are those cards called again?

Its in perfect running condition but he cant take it anywhere because the screen needs to be supported against a wall as it cant stand on its own. Is there any inexpensive way to fix the screen and restick back to the base of the laptop and if the only way to go is get a professional to do it, how much would it cost him to get it fix. He got the computer for 50 bucks so having the computer work perfectly even if he has to spend at most 300 dollars would be great.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi had my laptop on the floor in front of the recliner i was sitting it, i took the remote that i had put on the chair and fumbled it as i took it off of the chair. It fell about 2.5 feet straight onto my laptop and hit the screen. It bounced off of the the case in-between the hinge and the screen and then hit the screen about 2.5 inches up from the bottom. It made a crack from where it hit all the way to the top corner going at about a 45 degree angle to the left. Then the cat ran out of the room when i started cursing about my fumbling. There aren't any dead pixels some how, but it does have several cracks. Is there a plastic shield before the LCD layer? if anybody has a spare 14" ibook LCD screen from a 1.42GHz i book, i have money if you don't need it. Its not under warranty by the way.

Will the Power Mac work with only one processor? If I bought another processor will it have to be the same speed?
