PowerPC :: RAM Brand Guidelines - Generic Cards

May 30, 2008

This topic has been touched on from time to time here, but I wanted to somehow establish a more definitive consensus about what type of brands are capable of being used in the PowerMac G5, specifically the last dual core models.I know most people suggest brands like Crucial, Kingston, and OWC because they'll guaranty compatibility, but you'll always pay a premium for that guaranty. I can go with generic (read: PC) memory of the same type for significant savings, but I'm not sure how well it will work. Back in the day, with my PowerMac G4, I threw in any generic brand

PowerPC :: Adding RAM From A Different Brand?

Apr 18, 2009

I recently found some ram on ebay for $2.00 (2 512MB PC100 sticks for a buck each) but they are for Dell Poweredge.

My question is even though they are Dell Poweredge Ram ad since the specs for the RAM match that of the iMac G3, can I still use them in the iMac G3?

Here are the specs for the RAM:

Brand: Dell / Viking Components
Dell P/N: 6084D
Capacity: 512MB
512MB ECC PC100Mhz
Speed: PC-100MHz
Type: 168-Pin SDRAM

"With over 300,000 apps and 7 billion downloads, it has been a huge hit with developers and users around the world. Mac Pro :: Are There Any Guidelines To Adding Internal Hardrives?

May 22, 2012

Are there any guidelines to adding internal hardrives? Will any drive make/model be supported? I see from the specs on the Apple Store "1TB or 2TB hard drive, Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200 rpm, 32MB cache" so will a drive with 64MB cache not work or how strict is this? I am looking at adding a drive like this for example: url...

PowerPC :: What Cards Are Available For A G5 PCI-X

Jul 19, 2010

I upgraded my G4 Mirror Drive system to a new(ish) G5 2Ghz DP system, which sadly has nothing but PCI-X slots. Other than possible server stuff, what can you do with them?

I was annoyed when I realized it... I had a PCI card in my G4 with four USB2.0 ports and was hoping to migrate it to the G5 but, apparently not. Unless there is a 'trick' to make it work... like making the 9600Pro work in my old G4 using tape and covering up pins etc.

PowerPC :: G4 Upgrade Options - Decent Vide Cards?

Feb 20, 2007

I know the G4s are 733mhz and below, I'm not sure if they're Quicksilvers or DAs, I could probably find out, but I already bugged an IT guy once, so I'm not sure I want to ask again. Now, assuming these are at a decent price (from what I've heard, they usually are), is it worth it to buy one and upgrade? I've been reading over lowendmac.com, and I see both of the 733mhz models will accept dual 1.8 cards/boards. This probably won't be my primary machine, but my Photoshop machine until I get a Mac Pro.How much are the 733mhz machines worth, they probably have 1gb or so of ram, and a decent(for the time) vide card. The school doesn't really skimp, in our photo department, we have G5s w/dual 2ghz, 4gb RAM, and 23" ACDs.

OS X :: Sidebar Icons Revert To Generic?

Oct 11, 2010

Whenever I restart my system my sidebar icons revert to a generic white icon. Not all of them do it, and its not always the same ones. They flip flop for no reason. One time my picture icon will be generic, the next time I restart my picture icon is fine but my music icon is generic.

Anyone know why this happens? It never happened on my previous machines running the same version of OSX. 10.6.4

I used candybar to replace icons and its never been a problem in the past. I've even manually replaced the icons in finder and it still happens.

The icons in question are on my second drive, not my boot drive. Does that have something to do with it? Sometimes if I just click on the generic icon the correct icon will show up, sometimes it wont.

Software :: Icons Appearing Generic On G5?

My Quicktime movies and all my photos are all staying as a generic jpeg icon. Is there a specific problem that causes this.? I have two hard drives and the second drive is still operating normally. But my main drive has ceased converting every icon whenever I open a new window.

OS X :: Duplicate Finder With Generic Icon In Dock?

Jun 12, 2009

I don't really know how to describe this or even search for it. (I tried the best I know how) The only thing I can do is show a picture. I don't have any idea how this happened or how to fix it. The real Finder icon in the left of the dock does not have the light underneath indiciating that it is running, but there is a generic app icon that is actually the finder and has the normal Finder context menu when I right click it. This icon behaves just like any regular app and I can even right click and quit it. Anyone have any ideas what caused this and how to fix it short of reinstalling Mac OS X? BTW I'm using a 13" Alu MacBook running 10.5.7.
