OS X :: Mac Compatible External Sound Cards?
Dec 30, 2004i have a powerbook with a crummy internal soundcard. i want to add 5.1 surround sound to it but i cant seem to
find a mac compatible external sound card. Some people say that the sound blaster extigy is compatible but mac support is no where to be found on the extigy web pages. Can anyone confirm that the sound blaster extigy is compatible? and or list a couple other mac compatible external sound cards which are under 200 dollars?
Mac Pro :: Finding Compatible Airport Cards?
Oct 3, 2010I've got an old school mac pro 1.1 (because i'm too poor to afford a newer one) which didn't come with an airport card when I go it. Have just grabbed one out of a Macbook to put in the mac pro. It works, but not as a normal airport card should.
I'm not sure if its an incompatible card, or if i'm just dealing with a software issues. The normal airport menu up by the clock is useless. It just says Airport: No configured, and then has a link to network preferences in system preferences. I can connect to a network, and once its connected it works how it should, but to connect I need to go into network in system pref, then under network name, select Join other network, then show network, then i'll see the list of networks and be able to select the right one. But if I restart, or the computer goes to sleep, it forgets all that information, and I have to go back to the start again and select the network again.
Do you think its an incompatible card, or is there some software trick I can do to get it working properly?

Feb 27, 2008I need a wifi card for my MacBook Pro (preferably N, but G is OK), and an ExpressCard version seems the best choice, however I'm having a really hard time finding one in stores, much less one that I know is Mac compatible. It seems the PC-world's reluctance to move on from PCMCIA is slowing down progress in this area.
There must be an expressCard wifi card out there that works with a MBP running leopard. Does anyone know of one?

(seems tis is the only chance to get surround sound from mac to sound system...?)anyway, i choose digital out in the system preferences but no sound is being transmitted.btw. the cable (and receiver) is fine, if i hook up my dvd player it works just fine on the same optical input.i also tried this on my second mac pro. same thing. no sound.

Mac Pro :: Main Sound Control Sync With Optical Out?
Jan 4, 2006It was very hard to come up with a title for this thread. But here is the problem: I have 5.1 speakers i used for my PC, Logi z680s. I plugged in an optical cable to them and the PM. The volume control doesnt seem to be synced at all to what is going on. So I can have the main volume all the way down and as long as there is volume in itunes up(not set to mute equivalent) and up on the speakers, there is sound coming out. If I use the speaker out cable(which only allows 2.1), the sound is "synced" so even if I have sound on the itunes up and the speakers, if I lower the volume all the way with the main controls, the sound will go off. How can I force the optical out to play nice and sync with my volume control?
I think its worth noting I went into sound options, selected the optical out(when it was plugged in), and muted internal speaker but that didn't solve anything. I also know if I have the speaker volume set low enough to begin with, I can turn the volume down enough in OS X to make it seem mute. But needless to say that requires me manually messing with the speakers anytime I want anything over a whisper, so I can't really call that a solution.
MacBook Pro :: 5.1 Optical Sound (Yamaha Receiver)
Nov 20, 2007I have a Yamaha HTR-6030 5.1 receiver and a Santa Rosa Macbook Pro. I'm using an XtremeHD Optical Cord with a headphone jack that was bundled with it (bought at the Apple store). I've got the receiver set to "CD" mode as thats the optical port I'm using on the back of it. In the Audio MIDI setup panel (where I've gone in the past to make this work) my settings are Digital Out, 44100.0hz, 2ch-24bit. I'm not able to select anything more then 2 channels, so I'm missing out on the rears (not a big deal) and the center (more of a big deal). How do I get the computer to shoot 5.1 out?

May 25, 2009I recently bought a 2009 Mac Pro. Now, I'm trying to setup a small bedroom home theater. And sound is still my main problem here. I used my Mac Pro mainly for doing graphic works, listening to music, watching movie, and gaming sometimes.
Here is what I currently have.
8-Core Mac Pro
40" 1080p LCD TV for Movie
24" LCD for doing graphic work
Harman Kardon Sound sticks (trying to get rid of this and replace it with a 5.1 or 7.1 system)
And here is what I'm buying
5.1 or 7.1 Receiver
Speakers
My plan is to get audio out through the optical output. But according to several articles I read online, optical output does not transmit audio when I play music on iTunes or play games (in BootCamp), is it true? So far, I couldn't find any sound card (internal or external) which work for mac pro that has 3 analog 5.1 signal output which I can use with standard 5.1 speakers. The only things I found is the Creative DDTS-100 and the FireWire which were all discontinued. What other options do I have?

Jul 19, 2010I upgraded my G4 Mirror Drive system to a new(ish) G5 2Ghz DP system, which sadly has nothing but PCI-X slots. Other than possible server stuff, what can you do with them?
I was annoyed when I realized it... I had a PCI card in my G4 with four USB2.0 ports and was hoping to migrate it to the G5 but, apparently not. Unless there is a 'trick' to make it work... like making the 9600Pro work in my old G4 using tape and covering up pins etc.

The game will run but its glitchy, and slow, and occasionally freezes. So I know there are for PC but I cant any for the mac.

My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.

Mar 9, 2009I have a macbook and a Samsung 1080p flat screen I would like to connect both Video/Sound too.I purchased Apples VGA cable along with a HDMI cable. The video output works great, no complaints with the video. The issue that I have ran into is sound, I would like to watch videos or listen to music on my Samsung. So here's where I am at currently. I purchased a Griffin Auxiliary cable w/male connectors. I plugged the cable into the both macbook auxiliary ports (1 at a time) and the Samsung auxiliary port. I was never able to get any sound out of the TV.
Can this be done with the hardware I currently have? If not, what would I need to fix or purchase that would fix the sound issue?
