Mac Pro :: Are There Any Guidelines To Adding Internal Hardrives?
May 22, 2012
Are there any guidelines to adding internal hardrives? Will any drive make/model be supported? I see from the specs on the Apple Store "1TB or 2TB hard drive, Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200 rpm, 32MB cache" so will a drive with 64MB cache not work or how strict is this? I am looking at adding a drive like this for example: url...

I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?

I may be coming across a Dual 1.8 G5 (M9454LL/A) and just wanted anyones opinion. I was wondering how expandable this thing is in terms of adding another internal hard drive...also are there any limitations this machine has in general (i already have an intel mac so this would be a second computer)?

Heading off concerns that the Mac App Store might generate complaints about capricious rejections and unclear submission guidelines, Apple has issued an initial outline of what developers will need to do to get their apps listed in the new store."The App Store has revolutionized the way mobile apps are developed and distributed," Apple writes in the Mac App Store Review Guidelines document. "With over 300,000 apps and 7 billion downloads, it has been a huge hit with developers and users around the world. Now we are thrilled to be opening our new Mac App Store to the hundreds of thousands of Mac developers and tens of millions of Mac users around the world."

This topic has been touched on from time to time here, but I wanted to somehow establish a more definitive consensus about what type of brands are capable of being used in the PowerMac G5, specifically the last dual core models.I know most people suggest brands like Crucial, Kingston, and OWC because they'll guaranty compatibility, but you'll always pay a premium for that guaranty. I can go with generic (read: PC) memory of the same type for significant savings, but I'm not sure how well it will work. Back in the day, with my PowerMac G4, I threw in any generic brand

I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?
Internal HDD --> External HDD
Place internal HDD into optibay, and place SSD into the harddisk slot
Connect External HDD via USB to MBP
CarbonCopy to new SSD via USB from External HDD
Format Internal HDD
Will this work?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

iPod shuffle, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro and I'm thinking of adding a new HD. Im a video editor and have already 75% of my space. My questions are.
1. How much will it cost and where is the best place to buy them??
2. How difficult is it to install yourself?
3. Will it affect my previous hardrive?
4. How much more reliable are they than external HD's???

I'm living in Europe but site should be in the USA as i'm ordering it on the US AppleStore to have it (and the RAM as well) delivered to my friend's who lives in Pittsburgh and brings all back to me over here in May.

There is a big difference I would notice by adding more RAM to my machine. I use Photoshop, FCP, VMware (windows 7 and XP) and all the basic apps (itunes firefox etc). Haven't done much gaming but want to now that I have my MP. Would I notice a difference by adding 2 or 4 more GB in my 2 empty slots?

I got an HDD from a friend and its pretty faster than the one my Mac Pro has. What I want to do is, put all the system files, apps etc in that new HDD, but have my home folder on my old HDD which is bigger. How can I do that from software side? I am guessing it would cause problems to just move my home folder to another HDD.

Is there any way to add, more beep sounds in Mac OS X? I am getting tired of the same ones. I liked it when we could just add a sound file to the System file and have another beep sound.

I have a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver model M8667LL/A, Dual 1.0 Ghz, that I'd like to see about adding an additional USB port to the back of the unit. It only comes with two, one is being used for the keyboard-> mouse, the other I have an external hard drive plugged into. I recently bought a cradle for my Fuji digital camera that comes with a USB cord, I'd like to hardmount the cradle and plug it in but don't want to swap with the hard drive every time I use it or run the cable to the spare keyboard port, that looks like hell. Is this a feasible option to do, and if so, how? Mind you I'm not a computer expert so I'd either need a very basic set of instructions or an technician to do it locally, but first I'd like to know if it's even possible.

I recently found some ram on ebay for $2.00 (2 512MB PC100 sticks for a buck each) but they are for Dell Poweredge.
My question is even though they are Dell Poweredge Ram ad since the specs for the RAM match that of the iMac G3, can I still use them in the iMac G3?
Here are the specs for the RAM:
Brand: Dell / Viking Components
Dell P/N: 6084D
Capacity: 512MB
512MB ECC PC100Mhz
Speed: PC-100MHz
Type: 168-Pin SDRAM

I have the stock 2x1 and just ordered matched 4x2gb for a total of 10gb.
Now, I probably won't be needing 10gb for my audio work, so my question is, should I leave the stock ram out for the added benefit of the quad channel ram thingie? Because, according to this report, the 10gb config gives 6.8 throughput vs the 6.5 of the 4x2gb! I thought 4 or 8 slots filled should be faster? What gives??

I'm trying to add other top sites on Safari 4... I see it says "drag URL here to add a top site". Well, when I do that, I just get a icon saying I can't do that, and when I let the URL go on the window anyway, my top site is not added. So what the hell, how do I add a top site?

I can't seem to figure out how to add a printer, everything on the printer is setup. I can see the printer in my network (see photo, it's the EXROX-ALLINONE), but when I add it, it won't print anything, just waits and waits. I do know the internal ip for that printer if that helps.
I don't get how I can see the printer when I add it, but it just won't print.

I have a 2.4 GHZ intel core duo 24" iMac. I just ordered some upgraded memory from a place called ' memory upgrade.pro'. I've tried the support line to no avail. The specs on what I ordered is this: 4GB memory 2x 2GB MB413G/A PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz SO-DIMM. However, when I installed it - my computer did not turn on. The data written on the new memory stick itself reads: 2GB 2rX8 PC2-6400s-666-12-FO. I was hoping some a lot smarter than me can tell me if A. I got what I ordered or B. I ordered the wrong thing or C.

I have the Alum 2.4 Ghz MBP and I want to max out the amount of ram it holds. It already has 2gigs and I've heard that it can hold a max of 4gigs () And was wondering is it worth upgrading just 2gigs? Will there be a difference is speeds? I also plan on buying SL while I am at it. Yes I am in the upgrade performance mood for my MBP. And unlike a PC you can't really improve the performance to much other than the ram. Also, can I buy some ram on newegg or does it have to be the overpriced Apple ram? Also can I mix ram types? Since it already has 2gigs can I just buy 2 more gigs of a diff brand but same type?

I am running SL on my Intel MacBook. Since I upgraded to either SL or Safari 4, I have not been able to type a link and have it add www. and .com to the link automatically. For example, typing "google" and having it automatically add the .com to it. I've done some searching, and found out about OpenDNS. I would much rather not use anything like that to get my .com back. Does anyone know of a way to tweak some settings in Safari or SL to get it to do this automatically again?

I have just got a new mac and I was playing around with it when I found that on the keyboard settings you can create keyboard shortcuts to applications. So I clicked add and it gave me a list of apps to choose from - the one I chose was Safari. It then says enter the menu title (no idea what that is) so I just called it Safari. Then I chose the keyboard command - command S. When I clicked off it and tried it nothing happened.

I then have to go back, find it, and drag the folder into my subfolder. It is a real pain. Does anyone have a way to add a folder into a sub-folder without having to drag it from the root?

Can it be done? Is there a second socket on the uni-processor Mac Pro model which will allow for the addition of a second processor to the board, to give a dual-processor machine? For instance, with the 3.33GHz Mac Pro -- could you add another identical 3.33GHz quad-core processor to a second socket?

I have been trying to find out how to do this for a while and can't seem to get it right. I just got my brand new beautiful MBP, but am also new to Macs in general. I want to transfer my files from my PC to my MBP through wifi, but I can't figure out how to get the MBP added to my workgroup so that my PC laptop can see my MBP. Right now I'm on the network, but my Mac cannot see any other computers connected to it.
