PowerPC :: Hard To Read / Write To External Drives With G5
Sep 17, 2007This issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.
Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..

Jun 17, 2008this is the second time i have encountered this problem. when i plug in an external hard drive via USB, the lights go on and i can hear the hard drive clicking a whirring but cannot find it anywhere on my mac. both with hard drives formatted on pc's and macs.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Read And Write To External Hard Drives?
Apr 13, 2012hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

Jan 2, 2011I have two external hard drives connected to my airport extreme. The hard drives don't act like they would if they were connected directly to my macbook, though.
For instance, I'm trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner to sync the two hard drives and they won't show up in the program. They also don't mount as they normally would and they don't show up in disk utility.
I'm using version 7.5.2... I think that is the latest version - I recently upgraded and I'm not sure if thats why I can't do the aforementioned things.
I can't figure out how to use an older version though (reinstalled the software that came with the airport extreme but that didn't work).

OS X :: External Drives Read Only On Reboot?
Dec 29, 2009Every time I reboot my computer my external drives are all set to "read only". I have to eject them, and remount them and things are then fine again, but this is an annoying step and the fact that a reboot is causing them to switch to read-only is having me worried.
Anyone else have this problem/know of a solution?

Mar 2, 2009I have a G5 Imac and a G4 ibook. i want to use time machine, and have one external hard drive connect to both. I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).

Feb 5, 2007Ok, on my Powerbook in sig whenever I put a CD in it stays in for about 20 sec and then spits it back out, but when I boot up with the CD in it reads it just fine. This is making me mad because I'm trying to install the Burning Cruasde, and it is four discs.

Feb 2, 2009I currently have a 2TB WD mirror edition that is setup in RAID 1 so it will mirror all my data. Now I also have a bunch of other drives laying around which I also feel the need to back up and currently I am doing this by doing a whole bunch of dragging and dropping and copying and pasting etc etc etc and this is making me very tired. I know that a setup is possible in disk utility but I am not at all sure about how to configure it so I wont lose any of my data.
Some details about my setup:
Mac OS X 10.5.6
PowerPc G5
Harddrives: two 1TB WD MyBooks, and two 500gig WD Mybooks --> these pairs need to mirror each other and make my life less of a hassle.
OS X :: New External Hard Drives Crashing
Feb 25, 2009I often use external hard drives to back up my work. Recently I purchased a 1TB Lacie drive. I took a week to build a lovely new file structure for my work. At the end of this week, I began deleting the old files on other hard drives so as to transfer my new neatly structured work back on. In the midst of this, the brand new hard drive crashed, illiciting only the clicking sound of death.
That hard drive, some of my work (a very small amount but still) and a week's worth of sweat and blood was gone in an instant. The person I took it to to look at it mentioned a power surge as being a possible cause for the crash. Anyway, I returned the lacie and bought a 1T Western Digital Mybook (silver). I then began dumping the old back ups onto this.
A week in and this one is crashed too. No clicking sound of death. It calmly sits on my desk with it's unceasing unblinking blue light and refuses to show up in utilities no matter what I do. So I assume it's a goner also. I'll return it also of course. Is something causing these drives to fail...that exists in my walls? Are there power surges causing my drives to die...? OR is it simply a case of bad luck with my choices of new drives?
OS X :: External Hard Drives Not Seen By IMac?
Apr 19, 2010I was done doing various tasks on the iMac and when I decided to plug in the external hard drive for a Time Machine backup, the drive spun, but was never shown on the desktop.I also tried another external drive and had the same thing happen.
After rebooting (hey, this sounds like Windows!), the drive again showed up on the desktop and Time Machine worked fine.Is an external hard drive not showing up on the desktop a somewhat common issue?

Dec 9, 2007A buddy of mine has had a Power Mac G4 sitting around for a while now. I asked him about it, and he told me that I could have it if I wanted. He really only uses his MacBook Pro anyways. So, I get home, plug it all in, and nothing happens. I opened up the side and everything seems to be in place. There seem to be 2 hard drives, one which isn't screwed in. One of them isn't plugged in, I'm not too sure what that's about. Power supply is there, RAM is there. I don't know why it's not coming on. When I push the power button, a light on the front flashes for a second, but nothing happens. I know it needs a RAM upgrade, and probably a processor upgrade as well. However, first, I'd like to get it running first.

Oct 24, 2006Ok now I have a problem now with my PB. I upgraded to Tiger (bought from Apple.) I now can't play DVDs! When I was running Panther I could pop in a DVD and the DVD Player started up. Now with Tiger, I put in a DVD It mounts on the desktop (like any other cd.) I can still burn and read cds, but can't play dvds.

When I attach to a usb ion my windows PC it wont read or even pick up either external discs, is this normal. How do I get files from my mac to windows based PC, it does work using a memory stick. But why won't PC pick up the drives.

Apr 20, 2010i'm cloning my mac hd (mac book pro, snow leopard) and though i've made successful clones, the sum of the hard drives (mac hd and external hd) don't match. for instance, my mac hd reads at: 233.71 GB, however the cloned external hd reads at: 216.54 GB. can anyone explain this discrepancy? are there certain things that don't go into the clone that are on the mac hd?

Dec 11, 2008I have been using a MBP for a few months now and I am making a total conversion from PC user to Mac user in January when I buy a nice new 24" iMac but to go with it, I want to buy a couple of new external hard drives. I have currently got a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB USB Drive which is Windows Formatted and I will be keeping that to use with my work laptop (a Dell), and I have been really pleased with its reliability. Anyway, I have been looking around and there are some fab drives on the market but I have a couple of questions. If I get an iMac with a 500GB Internal Hard Drive, how big an External hard drive will I need to use Time Machine without having to delete backups all the time?
Also, I have been primarily looking at the new Seagate FreeAgent drives and the do a PC version (USB) and a Mac version (USB/FW400/FW800), but the 640GB USB version costs �76 whereas the 500GB FW version costs �100. Would you go for the bigger size or the added benefits of FW800? Will I notice much speed difference between USB and FW800?
