Sometime I plug and unplug hard drives of my PC while it is on. Will there be a problem to do that on the Mac Pro? If the computer supports this, do I need an internal drive that is also hot-swappable in order to be safe?
View 9 RepliesI have a 15" MBP with 256ssd installed and a 13" MBP with a 250gb 5400 drive. I prefer to use the 13" as my main computer and want to take the 256ssd drive from the 15" and put it in the 13". Then take the 250gb drive from the 13" and put it in the 15" How hard is this to do? I've not done something like this before. Since I'm swapping an ssd with a regular hd is it as easy as following the instructions on this forum, remove the screws and swap the drives? After that's done I'll need to overwrite the 15" software and load the OS and drivers for the 13" on to the ssd drive. Is that as simple as taking the restore disk for the 13" put it in the drive and reinstall the OS? Or, should I just take it to the local authorized Apple Dealer and have them do it? (We don't have an Apple store nearby.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI know the hard drives are swappable between computers (providing it has the same interface). My question though relates to formatted OS drives however. I have two Mac Pro's (MacPro1,1 and MacPro3,1). Can I swap the drives between them without losing software or reformatting? The reason I ask is with Windows, it seems to build the system around a specific motherboard configuration. Were you to replace the motherboard in that system, Windows will crash on bootup due to different kernel level drivers on the hard drive.
The reason I'm asking is because I like the way I have everything setup on my MacPro1,1, but want to get the speed boost from the MacPro3,1. Will this work or will I require a clean format of both drives when I swap them.
Been trying to figure this one out, but can't seem to find a clearcut answer. Here's the dilemma: My 2 1/2 year old MP got replaced under AppleCare by my local Apple store with a new Nehalem MP when they couldn't fix it. The 3 user installed drives in my old MP were good, so they moved them from my old MP to my new one. One of those was the boot drive in my old MP, so the Apple store tech made it the boot drive in my new one. I had the drives arranged in order on my old MP (being the anal engineer that I am), however now my old boot drive is in bay 4, the newer MP boot drive is in bay 2, etc., i.e. all mixed up. Being that the old drives were almost 3 years old I decided to clone my old boot drive to the newer one and make it the startup drive, assuming that it being newer it would be more reliable long term. That all went fine.
Now I know that the OS doesn't care in which bay what drive is but does Time Machine? If I swap around the bays to put my boot drive into bay 1 from bay 2 will that confuse Time Machine and make it backup everything again, i.e. wasting backup space??? I.e., does TM go off of physical name and location or does it go off of logical name?? I know it doesn't matter which drive is where, but I just like having things in a certain order to troubleshooting purposes just in case.
i have two exact same 17 inch MBPs i am thinking on selling one , one has a lot of stickers and marks on it and the data on that is not at all important (i can format the hard drive no problem). the other one body has very clean and data on that is important lots and lots of photos and videos. i want to sell the one which has clean body so i can get better $ for it. it is possible to just swap hard drives between these two identical MBPs and sell ? would that make any different in performance and also the serial number on ABOUT THIS MAC is that written on hard drive or some place else?

What I would like to do is use the larger harddrive as my Mac OS disk, while using boot camp to set the smaller one up with windows. when I set up the larger one with 10.6, do I have to use the install disks, or can I just copy all of the files from the old disk to the new? Are there any hidden files that I need that might get left behind?

I'm using a MacBook, the late 2008 aluminum edition. I'm running Snow Leopard and have updated to 10.6.2. For the last few weeks, I've been having a problem where my computer switches in and out of Expose view (where you can see all the windows open at once) and normal view, even when I haven't touched the trackpad or pressed F3 on the keyboard. Sometimes it switches back and forth very rapidly, other times, it just switches into Expose, and then I have to click back out of it, and as soon as I do, it enters Expose mode again. I don't have any hot corners enabled, and the problem occurs even when I turn off 4 finger swiping on the track pad. I can't find any information about this problem anywhere, and I don't know what could be causing it or what I can try to fix it

I would like to always have one external hard drive attached to my iMac for Time Machine backups, and another external hard drive off site - periodically swapping the two. The though is that if there is fire or theft, it won't help to have a hard drive onsite attached to the computer, because both the iMac and the hard drive could be lost. Is Time Machine smart enough to allow me to configure two drives, so that whenever I plug in one of the drives, it can figure out what needs to be backed up?

If you want to do modify or upgrade a Macbook you Should first back up your music, documents, photos etc to an external hard drive. That much I did know. And lucky for me because a few later I spilt wine on the keyboard. (Computers are not wine oriented). Lucky for me it was saved by a Mac expert. The iTunes library which also includes non-Apple purchases is sitting in an external LaCie 1tb Rugged external hard drive. And what I want to do is transfer/import the iTune library Back into the Macbook. Sure it probably sounds easy to a vetran computer person or even to someone who grew up with computers but to me it's like speaking Cantonese.

I have a Imac 20 with a small 3.5 hard drive and I have bought a bigger 360 gig 3.5 hard drive to replace the old one. I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?

Or do I have to set it all up again? The reason I want to do this is because the mac mini has a 320 GB HD and my macbook 500GB, so I want the bigger drive in the mac mini. But, I don't have a "transitional" hard drive to throw everything onto before I wipe the macbook hard drive and install it in the mac mini.

I know Excel 2008 does not support VB macros, but did anyone notice that "Macros..." is still available under the Tools menu? I wonder why it's there? BTW, I saved an old file in Excel 2008 that had macros and then opened it in Excel 2004 to see if the macros are still there. They are. That's a big relief, because I know I can at least work on files that have VB code in them without worrying that if I save the file in Excel 2008 format the macros will go poof. Ooof
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm really interested in buying a 2 drive miniG FW800 enclosure for my powermac G4. I have two 400GB seagate 7200.8 drives that I want to use with this enclosure. The only thing stopping me from buying the miniG is that their site says that they don't support Seagate drives becuase they are too hot compared to other hard drives. Does anyone have a miniG with Seagates inside? I know the power supply is outside and it only has a small fan inside, I don't mind if the fan works harder or I'll even replace the fan with a better one if i have to. I just want this enclosure bad but can only have it with seagate drives since that's all I buy.

View 11 Replies View RelatedFirst replace the Optical drive (superdrive is superdead) in my 2007 macbook with a SSD, probably a 128-240GBish, the current internal drive is a 5400rpm 500GB. I want to install the OS and a couple of the main programs I use on the SSD. The main question is what will the the time capsule do when trying to restore to the (smaller GB )SSD if the backup image (currently around 400 GB) is from the 500GB. Is there a better way to go about this? The HDD has about 100GB available. If there is a forum on this let me know.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a weird, and hopefully silly, question. I searched and searched both here and on the Apple website but couldn't find an answer, so here goes. I recently installed my OS onto a new OCZ Vertex SSD in my new Octo Mac Pro. Everything is mostly fine but I get occasional 'hang ups' when I go into my system preferences and attempt to change settings (I migrated the install from the stock drive that Apple sent me, so my next step is to delete the OS from my SSD and do a fresh install from scratch to see if that solves things).
My question is, does it matter, physically speaking, where my system drive is located within the order of the drive bays? I.E. does my system drive need to be the first disk in the bays or can it be the third or fourth disk? Does this effect performance at all?
I benched tested the new GTX 285 Mac Edition and the 8800 GT Mac Edition using X-Plane.
I used the same version (9.22 rc1) for both OS X 10.5.7 and Boot Camp WinXP.
I flew in North Dakota in order to eliminate as many objects and scenery as possible thereby making X-Plane as efficient as possible.
The flight was from Grand Forks (KGFK) to Crookston (KCKN). The length of the flight is 23.59 nautical miles and took 7 1/2 minutes.
I used a King Air B200 with a ground speed of 240 knots.
The renderings (1600 x 1200, 8xAA) and weather was exactly the same in both OS X and WinXP.
I flew three times for each video card and each operating system for a total of 12 flights. I averaged out the fps.
The 8800 GT Mac Edition is 2.3 times faster running under Boot Camp (WinXP) than the same 8800 GT running under Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Running under the same OS (Mac OS X 10.5.7), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 2.7 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
Running under the same OS (Boot Camp WinXP), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 1.6 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
My conclusion is the NVIDIA cards run much faster under Windows than they do with Mac OS X.

1) Does Bootcamp properly support Vista 64-bit ? If so how stable is it (don't want any crashes caused by poor drivers - really want rock solid stability under Vista) ?
2) Will the Mac Pro support any SATA hard drive or would I have to buy specific models/brands ?
