I have a g4 quicksilver and I bought a 1TB sata hard drive to put in it. I also bought a pci card to connect the sata harddrive. I disconnected my other hard drive and put in the OS X disc to load the operating system, but when I get to the screen to choose which disc to install it on, my hard drive doesn't appear.
View 4 RepliesI'm a graphic designer but I don't know much about my computer's inner workings. I have a mirrored drive door dual 1Ghz G4. I have two SATA drives that were used in a Dell server on a RAID setup. They are Western Digital Caviar HDs, 250 GB apiece.
My question is: is there any way to install one of these drives in my computer?
After installing internaly i booted back-up from my external FireWire HD bootable back-up, deleted and mounted the new HD and via 'carbon copy' i copied my bootable back-up onto it, set it as my start up disc and on restart everything appered to be fine but when i cope any files like movies onto new HD it fails telling me some info cant be read or writen but they copy no problem onto my external HD?

I have a PowerMac G4 (MDD 2003, I believe) that I use as my home media server for my Apple TV. Currently I have a 14+14GB boot RAID and 75+75GB storage RAID, using old PATA drives, of course. This is working great and is pretty well performing so far, but I'm going to run out of space eventually since I'm a packrat. I'm thinking that this Christmas will be a good time to renovate this machine, so here's the question MacRumors: What's the best SATA controller for my machine? PS: It's a dual 1.25GHz PowerMac 3,6. In MacTracker, this matches 3 different machines. Is there a way to find out which one this truly is?

I have a G4 Mac I wanted to buy a much larger drive. I bought a 1TB SATA internal drive, but when I tried to install it I found out it could not be installed on my G4. The motherboard does not have slots for the cable that came with the SATA drive. The hard drive that came with the computer is Ultra ATA from Seagate 180 GB. I found out that ATA and SATA have completely different configurations. I am planning to return it to the store. Is there anyway I can use the SATA on my G4, or should I just buy a larger Ultra ATA?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have two drives in my Quicksilver 2002 G4, one is a 250GB which can be fully used, the other an 80GB. Can U rid both of these drives and install two SATA 1.5TB drives? I do not want to use the PCI slots for a SCSI card and wire additional drives that way, because the transfer speed will be limited to 40mbps I believe. I have a Sonnet card a dual PPC 1,8Ghz card, a PCI USB 2.0 card and have other open PCI slots, but finally ran out of storage, and have a use for this machine to hold a LOT more. Other than the transfer speeds possible on SATA, are there any other differences between the original IDE (ATA) drives? Do they connect the same way?

1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?
2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?

1. Is there anything special I need to do installing the second SATA drive? Does the drive need to be set to Slave or Cable Select?
2. Because the 160GB (going to use for storing musc) drive has OS X Tger installed, will it be a problem when booting once I install both drives? The 320GB drive has Leopard (This will be my primary drive). Will it boot to Leopard and let me use disk utility for format the 160GB drive?

However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc. Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive ??, but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just replaced the HD in an iBook G3 I have laying around with a toshiba 40gb. The install went fine and I formatted it in disk utility using mac os x extended (journaled). I ran it for errors and it checked out fine. I also ran the apple hardware test CD and everything checked out there too. The problem is I am getting a kernal panic no matter what I do. I started off installing 10.3 and the first disc installs fine, but then when it restarts it gets an instant kernal panic. I tried 10.4 with the same results. Then I tried the 10.2 discs that the iBook came with and it would get the very last step of the install on the 1st disc and would not go any farther. It said "one minute remaining" for over an hour.
I have taken a picture of the error log that shows up and you can see here: The top line got cut off but it says "panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook4,3" Like I said, everything checks out hardware wise and i have tried three different versions of OS X.

I have a power mac g5 its a few years old and I'm having trouble installing OS 10.5 leopard. When I turn on the computer i get a blinking ? folder that alternates showing a ? and a mac face, with a gray background. I tried putting in the start up disk (? folder doesn't appear with the start up disk) and it guides me through the installation steps, but it doesn't display a location to install the OS on. I also tried putting an external HD in and this does not appear as well. So, I went to disk utility and tried the figure out the problem. In disk utility, the internal hard drive is there, but not the external HD. I also tried switching Hard drive ports from a to b and this made no difference.
