Is it possible to install 4 SATA drives into a G5 tower? I didn't open it up yet cause I have to move so much material to get to it. I'm assuming you can purchased a SATA PCI card but is there room in the case for 2 additional drives?

I'm hoping this can be answered with a simple "yup" so here it goes.
I have an 8-core 2008 Mac Pro tower. I need to throw a blu-ray burner in it.
The tower only has IDE interface cables for the two optical drive bays.
Will these play nicely together?
I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive ??, but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.

My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported... how can it be possible? I can now read cd/dvd but trying to burn them gives me "Internal error". Disk Utility report: "Burn support: not supported". I burned my last dvd three days ago, running lion 10.7.3. The only thing I can think of is a software update done few days ago, something about java. Samsung says that lion isn't officially supported, but i've used it a lot and I know it works… Things that i've tried:1) reboot2) firmware update3) many different burning software including "drutil" from the shell4) I've tested the device on another computer (ubuntu 11) and it works like a charm Additional information (drutil info):

I am looking to swap my mid 2009 15'' macbook pro 500GB 5200rpm hard drive with the new Samsung PB22-J 128GB 2.5" SATA-II MLC Solid State Hard Drive. Anyone have any advice or experience with this SSD?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having problems burning audio CD's lately. I have burned hundreds in the past successfully. No problems burning data discs onto DVD's however. Last time I tried to burn an audio CD error "laser not hot enough and bad media" have both come up. Some audio CD's that do burn successfully have skips throughout them or a static noise in some cases. This problem first happened when I bought a 100 pack of Sony's and chalked it up to a bad batch and then I bought another 50 pack of Sony's ( a brand I have had a lot of success with in the past) and am getting the same issues. The CD burner has seen a lot of use but should that matter?
Is the HD fragmented? My CD burner laser cover need cleaning?

I can no longer burn DVD's on my PowerPC G5 with 10.5.8, but can no longer do it as well on my Macbook Pro with OS 10.6--are all internal Superdrives now non functioning!!?? I've wasted many DVD's and no successes, just error messages and failures to burn.

I have a power mac g5. I have been having problems with applications running REALY, REALLY slow. Shutting down and rebooting took upwards of 10 minutes each. I've reinstalled the OS (twice) and it still takes 8 minutes to boot up and applications still run slow. Not as slow as before, but slow none the less. I'm thinking it might be a "going bad" HD and I want to get another one. Do I have to buy a Mac HD or can I buy one from say [URL]? Ive noticed that HD's on the Mac site are about twice as much as buying from a online store like Newegg or tigerdirect. My existing HD is a Maxtor Serial-ATA (thats the same as SATA right?). As long as I get the same SATA drive, will my mac handle it?

I have a carbon copy on an external firewire of my system and am looking to replace my drive which I know is a Diamond max 10 250gb sata. My difficulty is I don't know what to put in! . I have seen Maxtor DiamondMax 21 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 8 MB but is this compatible with my machine, or would you choose something else and so improve on this?

I'm a graphic designer but I don't know much about my computer's inner workings. I have a mirrored drive door dual 1Ghz G4. I have two SATA drives that were used in a Dell server on a RAID setup. They are Western Digital Caviar HDs, 250 GB apiece.
My question is: is there any way to install one of these drives in my computer?
After installing internaly i booted back-up from my external FireWire HD bootable back-up, deleted and mounted the new HD and via 'carbon copy' i copied my bootable back-up onto it, set it as my start up disc and on restart everything appered to be fine but when i cope any files like movies onto new HD it fails telling me some info cant be read or writen but they copy no problem onto my external HD?

I have a Power Mac 2.3Ghz (see spec in sig) with the standard 250GB Maxtor 6B25050 hard drive. I was wondering, how I could increase the speed of the computer? If I upgrade the hard drive to something like a Western Digital Raptor X 150GB 10kRPM SATA drive would this provide any performance increase over the standard disk? Memory-wise I never have any "page outs", so I understand that a memory upgrade will not increase the speed of my computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a G4 Mac I wanted to buy a much larger drive. I bought a 1TB SATA internal drive, but when I tried to install it I found out it could not be installed on my G4. The motherboard does not have slots for the cable that came with the SATA drive. The hard drive that came with the computer is Ultra ATA from Seagate 180 GB. I found out that ATA and SATA have completely different configurations. I am planning to return it to the store. Is there anyway I can use the SATA on my G4, or should I just buy a larger Ultra ATA?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is about the installation of AHCI drivers to SATA ports for Windows. AHCI drivers (Advanced Host Controller Interface klick -> [URL] Interface for Wiki) are advanced performance drivers for the SATA controller in your Mac Pro (ICH10R chips for Nehalem - ESB2 for all others). When you go to profiler in OS X and bring up ATA you will see that your disks will all be connected by AHCI protocols.

I just popped a 256GB Samsung SSD into my (old) PowerBook Pro1,1 2.16Mhz machine.
I used the disk utility to properly partition the drive (1 partition) and set the Scheme to GUID Partition Table successfully. Verified the drive and the disk utility seems to like it.
I restarted with the install DVD (10.5.7 from a "13-inch Mac OSX Install Disk" - 9J3050) and it still gives me the old, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume"
So... the OS is newer than the one that shipped with the machine, and the partition table is correct... what gives?
I want to upgrade my wife's Mac Mini (2007, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, model T2300) with a new HDD. I've done that a couple years back, but times were less complicated. Here are my questions:
1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?
2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?
I have a MacBook Pro with a 128GB solid state. Is this SATA II or SATA III?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm considering purchasing a higher capacity internal hardrive around the 750Gb/1Tb mark. However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc. Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

I have ordered my first Mac, a Mini 2.66Ghz and I will put a Intel X25-M SSD in the machine to speed it up further. I hope I will be pleased with it
However, the question I encountered was whether the sata connection in the Mini is SATA-150 or SATA-300? Does anyone know?
I am now shopping for a new internal HD of MAC G5; previous HD died. I have decided on a Western Digital and was about to order one when I became alarmed by the SATA II listings. Is there a difference between SATA and SATAII that I should be concerned about the comptability? Don't want to get it and find out it doesn't work!
