PowerPC :: G4 And Mozilla - Frequently Crashing
Oct 11, 2010
This G4 was upgraded to OS 10.1.5 and for some long time was quite happy to search the net using Mozilla 1.0.7 However it now frequently crashes. Is this because that version of Mozilla is no longer stable? Can a later version or even Safari be installed on this computer? Is it possible to upgrade the computer to OS 10.4 + so that later browsers can be used.

Since updating to SL itunes has been crashing unexpectedly. I updated about a week ago and already itunes has crashed 4 times. Just tonight it has crashed once while syncing to my ipod touch and once when attempting to access itunes store. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue. My system is a 1st gen unibody pro 2.8 GHz 15" 4 Gb RAM. I was also playing music while the last two crashes happened.

I have a MacBook model 5,1 (uni-body late 2008) that I had to replace its hard disk like 3 times in the last 1,5 year (maybe more).
Please note that the laptop is used in a flat, stale table, along with other laptop and an external hard drive (turned on most of the day and night). Also, I don't carry my MacBook everywhere with me. It stands on the table most of the time, like 90% of the time actually. One thing to note though is, I keep the MB turned on for long periods (~15 days), not doing very frequent reboots.
The symptom is always the same: it all starts with general sluggish performance and then, beach ball every once in a while. When I go check the system logs (/private/var/log/system.log) I find a couple of entries like: kernel[0]: disk1s3: I/O error. It's inevitable the hard drive exchange a couple of days later.
So my question would be: could it be an issue with the HD controller? The sudden sense motion component? Or what else?

Is Firefox crashing frequently for anyone else? I'm running 3.6 and it is crashing on me almost every day, and every time it is just after I start typing in the address bar or the search bar.

My powermac keeps crashing about after a few hours of use.
I installed some new samsung 1gb x 2 ram.
The hardware test and techtool show no problems but I'm positive the ram is the culprit.

I have an iMac G4 and it keeps crashing. I've zapped PRAM, bought more RAM, re-formated HDD, installed Mac OS X over and over, I don't know what else to do. Even if I boot it up and let it run, it will eventually crash, but at random times. If I re-boot right after it crashes, it crashes again, but if I wait, it doesn't.

I've got a 2005 iMac G5 PowerPC 1.8GHz running Leopard. It's been running absolutely fine since I had it (upgraded to Leopard for at least 18 months) but randomly a week or two ago it's started crashing.
Sometimes two or three times in a row, then it's been 2-3 days without problem.
The display starts flickering, usually the mouse pointer can still be moved but after 10-20 seconds or so it will just crash and I have to restart by holding the power button down.
There's nothing in the crash log. I've run the hardware test and checked the memory and everything is looking fine. I've completely reinstalled Leopard and also cleaned out the fan in case it was overheating that was causing this.

I bought a Powerbook G4 about 2.5 yrs ago, top of the line, new from an Apple Store and its been great. However over the last 2 months, its developed this habit of crashing/sleeping/going blank while it Itunes is streaming music, and/ or while Safari is up. Last night it did it while I was recording a Live DAT into garage band. I used to be able to hit the space bar or any key, and it would come back briefly, crash, repeat etc until I restarted. Now however, its just suddenly black. nothing. All I can do is take the battery out for a little while, wait, put it back in, and then restart. I've backed up everything as a precaution. I am diligent about uploading software updates, and I run MacJanitor from time to time...
I probably have 1200 songs, 15TV shows on Itunes, and 1000 pictures on iphoto, So I would hope my hard drive still has ample space.

I have a Powerbook G4 1.67GB with 2GB ram.
I am constantly having problems with the laptop shutting down when it is just on battery. It doesn't do this if I am plugged into power.
It does this on a random basis whatever program I am running but generally at 80%. I currently have Leopard as the operating system.

Which on do you use and why? I use Thunderbird because it's what I've used on Windows. I just moved over my profile folder with all of my settings and filters. I'm debating on going with Mac mail since it's native to OSX.

I've had a lot of problems in the past with the generic OS X Mail app. I've been unable to send, or receive, or both. I've tried just about every combination of ports, settings, etc., suggested to me on the Apple Discussions site. But all to no avail. So, I've finally ditched OS X Mail and installed Mozilla's Thunderbird. Now, using identical settings to those tried in OS X Mail, I can send, receive, and do just about anything I like. Except. Thunderbird will not import my Address Book! My Address Book is the standard Mac OS X Address Book. I have tried saving v-cards, saving the whole book, etc, but when I try to import to Thunderbird, I just get a bunch of blank v-cards or nothing at all. Step by step guide please. I'm sure this must be both possible and easy. I must just be missing some single vital step.

I have an older 15" powerbook Titanium. About five years old now. Been working pretty well all five years, save for an external hinge I had to replace. Last night, the computer started buzzing from the insides, a buzzing reminiscent of a distant chainsaw. The program i was working in (firefox) just went to the pinwheel of doom and never recovered. I moved to the finder, which did the same. I forced booted. Same noise. Same problems. I can use programs for a few minutes, but then they pinwheel of doom and the computer freezes out.

I just updated my mozilla firefox to the new version and it deleted all of my bookmarks. I didn't think it was a big deal because I could just re add them. When I restarted the application after re adding all of them they just deleted again. I deleted firefox and re downloaded it but it still keeps deleting my bookmarks when I restart it.

I just went to Lion and the cloud and am no longer able to get my mail from my .mac address through Thunderbird. Can I fix this or am I stuck with Mail? I don't care about reading mail on my iPhone. The move to Lion and iCloud has done nothing but make life more difficult for me.

In mozilla I am able to goto the home page but if I click on any of the links I receive "server not found" error message. i have already under firefox preference/advanced checked and ok the Firefox being the default browser many times. My objective is to make sure that whenever i restart or boot up the Mac, the Firefox icon would appear automatically on the desktop side bar to enable one to simple click on it to launch the Mozilla browser. Right now every time i restart the Mac i don't see the firefox icon on the side bar and has therefore to go into the HD to find the download and start the application firefox again.

Mozilla seems to be acknowledging speed issues in its Firefox web browser by adopting an updated rendering engine and architectural improvements that have significantly improved speed in the latest Firefox 3.0 beta. The Firefox 2.0 browser has been known to be one of the most sluggish browsers available, a fact that other companies such as Apple have highlighted in speed comparison tests. Mozilla also claims to have fixed more than 300 memory leaks. Full release notes available at:

I have had my macbook pro 13" for 3 weeks. The only significant amount of data storage I have on the computer is 2919 photos in iphoto. The only application I have downloaded is pages. I tried to download Mozilla Firefox because my facebook looked strange in safari. My wall page looked great but all subsequent pages look like I'm viewing them on an older version of blackberry.
Question #1. When I attempted to download firefox, a window stated it was unable because of insufficient disk space. I don't understand how this is possible (please see above).
Question #2. Why does facebook look strange now. I remember it working seamlessly when I first purchased the computer and only noticed the problem today. I log in every couple days.

I own a 15 inch mid-2010 macbook pro and have Windows installed via bootcamp. Because of this, I often shut down and reboot the computer into the other partition. I would say I switch between Windows and Mac OS X about six times a day.
Since I reboot often, I was just wondering if doing this does any damage to the hard drive or other hardware.
