MacBook :: MacBook 5,1 Frequently Crashing Hard Drives

Nov 30, 2010

I have a MacBook model 5,1 (uni-body late 2008) that I had to replace its hard disk like 3 times in the last 1,5 year (maybe more).

Please note that the laptop is used in a flat, stale table, along with other laptop and an external hard drive (turned on most of the day and night). Also, I don't carry my MacBook everywhere with me. It stands on the table most of the time, like 90% of the time actually. One thing to note though is, I keep the MB turned on for long periods (~15 days), not doing very frequent reboots.

The symptom is always the same: it all starts with general sluggish performance and then, beach ball every once in a while. When I go check the system logs (/private/var/log/system.log) I find a couple of entries like: kernel[0]: disk1s3: I/O error. It's inevitable the hard drive exchange a couple of days later.

So my question would be: could it be an issue with the HD controller? The sudden sense motion component? Or what else?

OS X :: New External Hard Drives Crashing

Feb 25, 2009

I often use external hard drives to back up my work. Recently I purchased a 1TB Lacie drive. I took a week to build a lovely new file structure for my work. At the end of this week, I began deleting the old files on other hard drives so as to transfer my new neatly structured work back on. In the midst of this, the brand new hard drive crashed, illiciting only the clicking sound of death.

That hard drive, some of my work (a very small amount but still) and a week's worth of sweat and blood was gone in an instant. The person I took it to to look at it mentioned a power surge as being a possible cause for the crash. Anyway, I returned the lacie and bought a 1T Western Digital Mybook (silver). I then began dumping the old back ups onto this.

A week in and this one is crashed too. No clicking sound of death. It calmly sits on my desk with it's unceasing unblinking blue light and refuses to show up in utilities no matter what I do. So I assume it's a goner also. I'll return it also of course. Is something causing these drives to fail...that exists in my walls? Are there power surges causing my drives to die...? OR is it simply a case of bad luck with my choices of new drives?

PowerPC :: G4 And Mozilla - Frequently Crashing

Oct 11, 2010

This G4 was upgraded to OS 10.1.5 and for some long time was quite happy to search the net using Mozilla 1.0.7 However it now frequently crashes. Is this because that version of Mozilla is no longer stable? Can a later version or even Safari be installed on this computer? Is it possible to upgrade the computer to OS 10.4 + so that later browsers can be used.

OS X :: Are Solid-state Drives Faster Than Hard Disk Drives?

Sep 13, 2009

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...

Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.

Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.

I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Recognize Hard Drives

Oct 5, 2010

I just recently bought a Macbook Pro about 2 weeks ago. Everything's been working great up until today. First I noticed that my MBP wouldn't recognize my phone when I plugged it into the USB. (Its an Android phone - don't bash me for it) I just thought it was my phone at first. A couple hours later I tried transferring some files to my external hard drive (1TB iomega) and my MBP wouldn't recognize it. I plugged in another one of my external HD (320 GB Maxtor), same problem. I then tried my other external HD (500 GB Western Digital), same problem. I tried a different USB port, different cord, rebooting the mac, nothing seems to be working. It will recognize my ipod touch tho. Being that its happening on 4 different devices, I doubt its the devices themselves. Its not the cord because I tried 2 different ones, 3 if you count the one for my phone which uses micro USB.

I am very new to the mac world so other than the things I have tried already, I don't have a clue what to try next. Oh yea, one more thing, all my hard drives are formatted for pc being that I just recently bought my MBP, I had all these hard drives before my mac. And they have all connected fine to my MBP in the past week or so.

MacBook Pro :: Old And New Hard Drives Not Recognized?

Aug 4, 2010

Last week, my Macbook Pro (13", Mid-2009 model) froze. I held the power button to shut it down, and when I tried to start it back up, it gave me the blinking folder of death. I tried to boot using my Snow Leopard disk to try and repair the disk, but there was no drive except my DVD drive found.

So, I brought it into a local Apple store, and the "geniuses" told me my hard drive had failed and that they could replace it for $300 (I'm 1 month out of warranty, no AppleCare). I declined the offer and bought myself a hard drive off NewEgg for $50 (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB).

I opened the computer up, took out the old hd and put in the new one. I booted to my Snow Leopard disk to install it, and again there was no hard drive found. I tried to go through Disk Utility as well and there was no listed hd.

Both machines have snow leopard, but since this is not a straight swap and I'm crossing between models I wasn't sure how successful I would be. OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Reformat Hard Drive If IMac Locks Frequently?

Feb 19, 2012

My Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 is 3 years old. I am having major problems with it. For the past 3 weeks now, everytime I try to use the Creative Suite 4 applications, the computer locks up...spins and spins and spins. I force quit when I can and oftentimes I cannot. I ran the disk utility from the Installation Disk and ran disk repair. The message that I received was a minor one but the problem continues....Vol Bit Map has minor problems. Does reformatting the hard drive is a good idea? It seems that I can get online with no problems. I have backed up all important files and am ready to reformat but want to make sure first that this option is the only one I have.

OS X :: Hard Drive For Macbook Pro And External Drives

Aug 14, 2010

So I just installed a larger hard drive in my macbook pro. As OSX was installing I decided to read reviews online (bought it in the store when I got the MBP). They're all really bad about using the drive in a MBP - [URL]. I'm installing the application software now and the hd is spining a lot and vibrating the case and making a lot more noise. I've read a few Seagate reviews and they're not much better for that size.

I want to install a huge hard drive because this is going to be my main computer for at least 8 months while I'm working away from home. Normally I have a desktop w/ a huge hard drive so I don't care what's on my laptop. Anyway, based on these reviews and how the drive has been feeling in the case, I think I might re-evaluate putting a larger drive in, and instead go with an external. I can fit all my photos and music on a 250, but I couldn't fit everything I store on my desktop on a 250.

So my first question is, is there a good, reliable 500gb or larger 5400rpm replacement hard drive for the mbp, that a lot of people like? And then the main question: I have a lot of large video files on my Windows box that are over 4gb, which is the FAT32 limit. When I transferred them from my old computer I had to rar them to smaller files and then un-rar them. This is quite annoying. If I'm gonna have an external drive, I'd like one that can be used on both windows and mac and support 4gb+ files..................

MacBook Pro :: Transferring Hard Drive Data - New SSD Drives

I just did a time machine backup (to an external hard drive) of everything on my computer before i switch out the old drive to a new SSD OWC...Is this enough of a back up to where once i get the new SSD drive in i simply go to the time machine and it will put everything back the way i had it on the old hard drive correct? Or is there another step i need to take to make sure i transfer all of my data safely. I cant find my parallels product key nor my Microsoft word product key so i was wondering is this going to be an issue on the new hard drive? will the computer ask for the keys or since i backed everything up in time machine will it come back like normal.

MacBook Pro :: Best Utility To Control Hard Drives And Fans

Feb 16, 2010

Setup: MB Pro. early 2009 2.93 Ghz, 8GB RAM, 2 hard drives via optibay
Request: Utility to better sleep the hard drives/fans when not being used

Problem: With the two hard drive setup, battery life is reduced. I knew this going in. So, I would like to purchase a utility that allows for better management of the MB Pro hardware so that, say when I am only reading something on screen with no needed hard drive activity, the hard drive goes to sleep faster than the current energy management application requires. This would help increase battery life some (not back to pre two drive setup, but better than now). I want to good utility and cost is no object because the cheap, even free utilities I have used in the past on other things like cleaning your mac tend to make the computer act funny (just trust me on this one).
