PowerPC :: Using G5 And MacPro Hard Drive Swap And Display
Jul 16, 2009
Hoping someone can help me figure this out. I swapped HDDs between a G5 and MacPro this morning. The MacPro was connected to a large LCD TV via HDMI for it's display (using a DVI to HDMI adapter) and it worked great for just scrolling images of our projects (no audio). When I put it's HDD in the G5 and connected it to the display the same way, I got nothing on the screen. Thinking it was a video card issue on the G5 end, I plugged in a different monitor and rebooted the G5. This time I got the flashing question mark folder meaning it couldn't find an OS to boot. So now I can't tell what the issue is. I thought HDDs between G5s and MacPros were the same? If not does this mean the older G5 drive won't work in the MacPro tower? (I haven't tried yet).

Colleague and I at work are swapping desktops as I need ot run VMWare and he no longer does so I will be having his MacPro and he my PowerMac - whats the quickest way to swap? He's suggested swapping the HD's over but I dont think that will work due to the PowerPC and Intel software differences... right? If that wont work then how can we do it as painless as possible?

I recently had to upgrade the graphics card in my Mac Pro, however it won't boot up because the OS isn't update which is what is required. I have a G5 which I have put the MacPro hard drive into so that I could boot it up, update the software and put it back in the MacPro. The G5 recognises the hard drive when it is acting as a 2nd Hard drive to the G5's original but it doesn't show it as a startup option. I have tried having just the MacPro drive in the G5 without the original hardrive but then it doesn't boot at all. Both are running 10.5 and I can't understand it won't find it.
I have tried it the other way around, the G5 hard drive in the MacPro and it works fine and when I put the MacPro hard drive in as second Hard Drive it shows up as an option for startup but doesn't work as it isn't uptodate.

1) Can I take my secondary drive in my Powermac G5 and install it into my forthcoming Mac Pro ? Or is the SATA interface different on the new machines.
2) Ordering extra memory from Crucial to save $, what's the situation with 'fans' and things on the memory. I'm confused, totally. Does the mac pro's require additional heat cooling on the memory, does the memory from crucial come with this, is it easy to install like the powermac or am I going to be left floundering like a fish out of water....

Someone just gave me an old G3 Power Mac that works fine but has OS9 installed. I'd like to put Tiger on it but it has a CD-ROM drive instead of DVD. Looking at the currect drive it seems like a standard CD tray drive. Is it possible to swap out this drive with a DVD drive or do I have to have a special type of drive approved by Apple? I'm doing this so that my kids will have a access to another computer in my office.

thinking of relegating my mini to HTPC and buying a new base model 15" MacBook Pro. As both these systems have essentially the same hardware, including 9400M graphics, can I just swap the hard drives so my current 7200rpm mini drive goes into the new MacBook Pro, and the new, unused, 5400 rpm drive comes out of the Pro and into the mini?
Any reason this wouldn't work? I just think it would take a lot of time to back everything up to Time Capsule and then fresh install both hard drives.

My wife uses our old intel blackbook from 3 yrs ago, still running Tiger with a 120GB HDD and 2GB RAM. I'm upgrading her to snow leopard, and I am wondering if I can swap my 250GB HDD in my unibody macbook into her blackbook, and buy a 320GB 7200 rpm drive for my UMB. I use more memory than she does, and I would love a snappier drive in the 7200. Both of our current macbooks are 13" and both drives are 5400 rpm drives. This is the best deal I've found on the drive I want.

I am wondering if there is anything I can do to prepare my computer for a hard drive swap regarding repairing any permissions or erasing any files.
Im planning to swap my 500GB 5400 OEM drive for a 500GB seagate Momentus XT using super duper, I was wondering if I should do anything to make sure I don't have any errors and get the best out of my new drive.

I'm going to do my first HDD swap with my unibody macbook. I was all set to use Time machine, but I'm hearing that CCCloner or SuperDuper are a better idea. So, could someone link me a good deal on an enclosure I can stick my new drive into? OR, would I be ok just cloning to a partition on my 1TB external WD drive, then installing the fresh HDD, then cloning from external WD to new internal?

MacBook 13"/2.0/2x512/120/SD Black I have the following MBP as my main laptop: 17" MBP 2.6GHz C2D HDef 200GB_7200 2GB RAM Instead of just buying a new HD for the MB, I'm thinking of upgrading my MBP to a 500GB, and then flipping the 200GB over to the MB. I have the Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 in the MBP to flip into the MB. Thinking of purchasing the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 for the MBP.

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

i just installed a new 2nd, (750 gb) hard drive into my g5 because my first 250gb is nearly full. I'm trying to launch logic but the file is way to big. It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. Can anyone tell me how i can make my second hard drive my new primary hard drive? I got the .dmg for my leapord osx. but not the originals anymore. can anybody help me with this. i'm pretty sure it's simple, i just don't know how to do this.

I am a student who is currently starting to work on some at home projects with cartoon animation (Toon Boom) and Video Editing (Final Cut/After Effects). I have a Dual 2.0 G5 with 1G Ram. Would there be a significant advantage in upgrading to a Dual 2.8 Mac Pro? I could probably get 700-800 dollars for the current computer so, would dropping 2000 on a new tower give me a huge boost in performance? (Money is kind of an issue but not if the difference is staggering.) Or should I just upgrade the RAM on my current tower, be happy with what I have and quit jabbering?

My early 2008 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro died last week. I tried all the usual stuff and ended up taking it to the local Apple store genius bar. They ran their diagnostics tool on it and did not find any problems so I had to leave it for a more thorough test. The Apple Store called a few days later and said it was either the main logic board and/or one or both CPU's. They -say- they replaced the main logic board and that did not fix it. They told me it would be ~$2800 USD plus labor to replace the the main logic board and both CPU's. So I took the machine over to another authorized Apple Service center for a second opinion. This other service center seemed confident they could determine which component(s) are defective. I am expecting a call from them on Tuesday of this week and hope to find out more then.
The symptoms are: When powering the machine I hear the startup sound and the display shows the apple logo. The machine boots for a little while (disk activity is heard) then the machine freezes for about 30 seconds then reboots or just freezes indefinitely. This happens with my 10.6.5 boot system, a second 10.6.x boot system on another internal drive as well as from the 10.6 SL DVD installer disc. Apple could not boot it off their network based systems either. Same symptoms on all startup disks tried so far...
So, I'd like to know where to go if I need to obtain parts and do the repair myself. I've built a number of PC's in the past and have no concerns about the undertaking. I just need to determine which parts I need. I'm not looking to "upgrade" the machine however if faster CPU's are available for a similar price I'd probably opt for the upgrade. At this point I'd be completely satisfied replacing the defective components with the same stuff that's in the machine now. Any pointers/links/tips/etc. would be most appreciated.

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

Would it be possible to get a logic board with a 1.33ghz or faster processor out of a 12.1" G4 and swap it in to a G3? Are the parts even compatible? I know from building engines that certain years and parts are interchangable but I don't know about computers.

Does anyone know if I can swap a VGA Tibook LCD screen onto a DVI Titanium Powerbook? Is the higher resolution in the screen set up itself? I actually wouldn't mind at all if it would work because I actually like the lower res screens of the earlier tibooks. Just wondering if it can be done.. and I don't mean taking out the actual LCD screen itself from the Tibook case and frame, I mean actually SWAPPING the LCDs and plugging them in. I just wonder if the older LCD could be plugged into the logic board or not. It seems that they would fit the case. I'd really like a faster DVI Tibook with the lower res screen because the font sizes are larger.

I think with all of the drives i am going to put in it, i am going to need a more power.

I can't seem to find specific information that would tell me if a 1.25 GHz processor from a MDD G4 would swap into a G4 Quicksilver (733 MHz) I have sitting in a corner.
They are both single processor machines, but I question the compatibility. I don't have the MDD machine with the 1.25 GHZ processor yet, so I can't look at them both for comparison.

I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.
To give you some details:
- I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.
- The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD
- Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors
- PRAM NVRAM reset did not help
- when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext
My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.
Solution: Re-install Mac OS X from the installation DVD that came with the i5 on top of the existing (old) system. This takes around 45min. and leaves your data intact, but adds the Core i5/i7 support.
