Is there any possible way to add usb 2.0 or firewire to my slot loading G3 iMac 350mhz? I would just rather use my iPod with my mac and usb 1 takes forever to put songs on it. I haven't been able to find anything and as far as I know there is no place for expansion cards, so I'm probably just gonna hear a no back on this one.

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a firewire 800 dual 1.42 GHz G4 power mac, which didn't have a hard drive or memory. I bought some memory from OWC and I threw a hard drive in it. When I press the power button I hear the startup sound however there is no video on the monitor. I'm trying to figure out whether it's a bad motherboard, video card, or if it could possibly be something else like the power supply. I have reset the PMU to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to figure out which component is bad?

My question is this- If I buy a 40 GB HD, can i clone the HD from my G4 ibook through firewire? I have the tiger family pack, so I have an extra license for it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had to perform a complete clean re installation on my main HD to get my G5 Cypher dual core 2.63 running again with leopard. Somehow when I screwed the main HD it locked me out of my other internal HD and every Firewire drive connected to the computer. Those drives will not show up on the desktop. Is there a back door way for me to unlock them. In Tech Tool Pro, they show up as locked. I tried repairing the permissions with TTP, but it failed. My gut is telling me I might have to buy some data recovery software to get my files off those drives and then reformat them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to upgrade a family member 800mhz iBook G3 from 10.2 to 10.4 using my old iPod as the install drive. (Restored a DMG, etc) Only problem is that (other than being an ancient computer, I guess) is that said iBook doesn't see the iPod until after OSX loads (white spinny guy).
Tried holding Alt at bootup (not listed), setting it as the default boot device (just skips it and goes right to the HD), and just running it from OSX (reboots, straight back to OSX desktop).
Is there something I'm missing? Does this model G3 not allow detecting boot devices at start up? I'm kind of at a brick wall here. Should I just bite the bullet and do a target disk install?
My 1.2 GHz G4 iBooks Firewire stopped working recently. Have tried zapping pram, reloading OSX etc but no luck. Fortunately USB is still working fine so I can still use my external 500GB hard drive, but I can't download video from my aging Sony video cam.
Any suggestions, other than chucking it and getting a new Macbook/Pro? (Which I plan to do sometime anyway, but would rather prolong the life of my iBook for the moment if possible)
I have a 2004 iBook G4. My internal HD broke yesterday, but I have a backup on an external firewire HD enclosure, made using CCC. I've tried to boot from it using the startup disk tool on the install DVD: it comes up as a useable startup disk, but when it restarts I get the blinking folder icon for a few seconds, and then it boots from the internal HD (or tries to.)
Disk utility says it is bootable, I can mount it and edit files using single user mode from the internal HD, etcetc, but it just won't boot from it.
I've even tried to go into Open Firmware and boot yaboot from the external drive, but it doesn't seem to see the drive at all until after OS X is booted.
I have a MBP intel that I made a clone off via superduper on my portable firewire hd. I'm trying to get my power mac g5 to boot off of the clone via the portable hd.I've tried checking Startup Disk within the sys pref area but it does not list the portable hd there, although, I am able to see the hd on the desktop (add, del, move files etc)so the portable hd is working fine.I've also tried booting up holding down the Option key but it doesn't work, I think it is because I am using a wireless logitech pc keyboard (no i dont have any other keyboard to use unfortunately).I did a search and apple said to make sure that I update my firmware? Not sure where to find that specific firmware to make this work.

When I plugged it in again the external harddrives (four in all) that were daisy chained through the two firewire ports aren't being recognized anymore. I thought it was a bad cord or insufficient power but nothing worked. When I finally got around to looking at the System Profiler and check Firewire it said, "Unable to list firewire devices". I admit that I'm at a loss and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHere's what's happening: We can connect the iBook to the MacBook with a FireWire cable and boot the iBook into FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM) successfully. The MacBook recognizes the iBook and mounts it as a drive on the desktop. When we try to launch Migration Assistant, it asks us where the old data is located. Specifying another Mac (which is the logical choice) causes it to beachball for about 10 minutes then tell us to connect the two computers with a FireWire cable and boot the other one into TDM, which we've already done. Choosing from a Time Machine backup or other disk causes it to display a blank window, as if it can't detect any other systems.

I've connected the PB to my tower's Firewire PCI card, put the PB in target disk mode, and Windows prompts me with the found new hardware wizard. After the wizard finished, I did not see my PB in My Computer. It does not show up in Disk Management, either. It does appear in the Safely Remove Hardware window as "UNKNOWN MODEL AND VENDOR IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device", and in the Device Manager as "SBP2 Compliant IEEE 1394 device". How can I get this to show up so I can backup my old files?

I Current have a 2007 iMac 24" 2.4 with 10.56 installed, and I have been having tons of problems with OSX recognizing the camera.
It seems I need to reboot the machine, turn on the camera and do my importing, but once I turn off the camera and try to use it again later It requires me to unplug reboot and repeat the process each time.
I have had to disable the isight camera in order for it to even get this far.
I like to plug my digital camcorder into computer through a firewire 400 cord - will this work on firewire 800? If not what can I do?!

What I wasn't aware of tho, was that there's no firewire 400 port on it anymore, which I need for all my peripherals (scanner, hard drives, etc.)
I bought a firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and while everything fits physically, there's no connection. The iMac refuses to find any hardware I connect to it...
I don't have anything that uses firewire 800, so I can't do a proper diagnostic. Thought I'd ask you people if you have any idea what might be the problem?

I would like to accomplish this through FireWire, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know about Target Mode, but I don't think this is what I want to do. i got an aluminium imac. however, today when i tried to connect my FW800 Hard drive it did not work and it works by FW400. i connect the same Drive to my MBP using FW800 and it is working flawlessly.
i am still running tiger while the MBP has leopard
i wonder wether the returned My Book Studio has any effects on this. i returened it because i couldnt get it to connect via firewire. i really hate this as i use that lovely FW800 port a lot.
I have some iMacs (running 10.5.6) each with an external direct-connect FireWire hard drive. About every ten minutes, these drives will spin up for a minute or two, then spin down again.
Background: The drives are set as Time Machine backup volumes on their respective iMacs. I assume the frequent accesses I observer are not related to Time Machine (because the accesses are much more frequent than the hourly backup schedule). The drives are not remote-mounted anywhere.
G4 IMac, 10.4. I have a simpletech 1 tbite hard drive that does not mount almost always on my machine. I just brought it home from a friends where it does show up instantly. Ran disc utility for permissions on my imac, swapped cords. Power on before boot up, power on after, unplug firewire, etc., nothing works. I want to install OS X 10.4 on the drive to try & boot up my powerbook (panic kernel message there).

I have a Freecom Quattro Dock which allows me to hot swap hard disks, and it's connected to my iMac via Firewire 800. I use it to backup my internal HD. I backed up my iMac HD and then proceeded to upgrade from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 which appeared successful, but now my iMac cannot see the disk connected to the dock via the Firewire 800 port. The dock has USB 2 and Firewire 400 connections, and it works fine via Firewire 400.

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
