so I bought an ibook G3 500 MHZ from ebay that was listed for parts and fixed it, but it had no hard drive. Right now, it has a 6 GB from my lombard. My question is this- If I buy a 40 GB HD, can i clone the HD from my G4 ibook through firewire? I have the tiger family pack, so I have an extra license for it.
View 1 RepliesI am getting an Ibook G3 from a friend and it is kinda old, I think the HD is about 20gb and i am sure it is running panther. I would at least like it to run tiger, that is what i have in my intel mac mini. Is there a way to clone the HD of my mini and maybe get a slightly bigger HD for the ibook and just use the clone from the mini in the ibook? I dont want to put much money into the ibook as far as buying the os and such because im sure it has or will get the gpu problem sooner or later. I just want to know if it is possible to do this task.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to upgrade a family member 800mhz iBook G3 from 10.2 to 10.4 using my old iPod as the install drive. (Restored a DMG, etc) Only problem is that (other than being an ancient computer, I guess) is that said iBook doesn't see the iPod until after OSX loads (white spinny guy).
Tried holding Alt at bootup (not listed), setting it as the default boot device (just skips it and goes right to the HD), and just running it from OSX (reboots, straight back to OSX desktop).
Is there something I'm missing? Does this model G3 not allow detecting boot devices at start up? I'm kind of at a brick wall here. Should I just bite the bullet and do a target disk install?
My 1.2 GHz G4 iBooks Firewire stopped working recently. Have tried zapping pram, reloading OSX etc but no luck. Fortunately USB is still working fine so I can still use my external 500GB hard drive, but I can't download video from my aging Sony video cam.
Any suggestions, other than chucking it and getting a new Macbook/Pro? (Which I plan to do sometime anyway, but would rather prolong the life of my iBook for the moment if possible)
I have a 2004 iBook G4. My internal HD broke yesterday, but I have a backup on an external firewire HD enclosure, made using CCC. I've tried to boot from it using the startup disk tool on the install DVD: it comes up as a useable startup disk, but when it restarts I get the blinking folder icon for a few seconds, and then it boots from the internal HD (or tries to.)
Disk utility says it is bootable, I can mount it and edit files using single user mode from the internal HD, etcetc, but it just won't boot from it.
I've even tried to go into Open Firmware and boot yaboot from the external drive, but it doesn't seem to see the drive at all until after OS X is booted.
Broken harddrive, dont wanna get a new internal one, I need to boot from external firewire.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHere's what's happening: We can connect the iBook to the MacBook with a FireWire cable and boot the iBook into FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM) successfully. The MacBook recognizes the iBook and mounts it as a drive on the desktop. When we try to launch Migration Assistant, it asks us where the old data is located. Specifying another Mac (which is the logical choice) causes it to beachball for about 10 minutes then tell us to connect the two computers with a FireWire cable and boot the other one into TDM, which we've already done. Choosing from a Time Machine backup or other disk causes it to display a blank window, as if it can't detect any other systems.

It came with no OS (donated by my local college to my high school and eventually given to me for my services in fixing this and the other 6 PowerMacs, and the 7 iMac G5s), so my IT teacher and I copied OS X 10.4.11 from one like it. That is currently my primary OS. We read online while thinking about upgrading his and mine Apple PCs to 10.5 Leopard, about the system requirements. They all line up [URL]:
- A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
- 512 MB memory or more
- A DVD drive for installation
- 9 GB of available disk space or more
With a 1.25GHz PPC, 2Gb of RAM, and an 80Gb Seagate IDE HDD, I'm all set up, right? On Friday, before the end of the day, I copied OS X 10.5.7 Leopard from an iMac G5 w/ G5 iSight (late 2006 model). We plugged it into his iMac G5, runs like a charm. Plug it into the "test" G4 (exactly like mine, but only one Seagate 80Gb IDE HDD), and it took a while, but it booted. So today, I copied it to my blank Seagate 80Gb, assuming that it would boot like the LaCie External HDD did (yes, that worked too).
It finishes copying, I reboot, hold option, punch in the lock code, and Low AND Behold... No Seagate. Mac OS X 10.4.11. But no Mac OS X 10.5.7. Okay. So I boot back to Tiger and recopy. Try to open a couple programs, they work (Office 2008 Word, Dreamweaver CS3, and iTunes 9.2). No problem. Open System Preferences, choose Leopard as the initial boot device, reboot. Mac starts up, and I get the screen with the little folder that alternates between the question mark and the Finder icon.
im trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on to an external drive. I want to run Leopard off of an External Hard Drive which will connect via Firewire of USB 2.0. I have booted up using the install DVD that i bought a couple years ago to upgrade from Tiger. However each time i install i get an error saying that it cannot be installed. It allows me to start the install and is almost complete before i get this error. I have it partitioned using the Apple Partition Map so i can boot up on a PowerPC computer.
What should i do to install 10.5 on an external drive?
I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
My iBook G4 power supply failed and I'm awaiting a replacement. In the mean time, can I use the power supply from my iBook G3 with the iBook G4?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?

I would just rather use my iPod with my mac and usb 1 takes forever to put songs on it. View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a firewire 800 dual 1.42 GHz G4 power mac, which didn't have a hard drive or memory. I bought some memory from OWC and I threw a hard drive in it. When I press the power button I hear the startup sound however there is no video on the monitor. I'm trying to figure out whether it's a bad motherboard, video card, or if it could possibly be something else like the power supply. I have reset the PMU to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to figure out which component is bad?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've had to perform a complete clean re installation on my main HD to get my G5 Cypher dual core 2.63 running again with leopard. Somehow when I screwed the main HD it locked me out of my other internal HD and every Firewire drive connected to the computer. Those drives will not show up on the desktop. Is there a back door way for me to unlock them. In Tech Tool Pro, they show up as locked. I tried repairing the permissions with TTP, but it failed. My gut is telling me I might have to buy some data recovery software to get my files off those drives and then reformat them.

I'm trying to get my power mac g5 to boot off of the clone via the portable hd.I've tried checking Startup Disk within the sys pref area but it does not list the portable hd there, although, I am able to see the hd on the desktop (add, del, move files etc)so the portable hd is working fine.I've also tried booting up holding down the Option key but it doesn't work, I think it is because I am using a wireless logitech pc keyboard (no i dont have any other keyboard to use unfortunately).I did a search and apple said to make sure that I update my firmware? Not sure where to find that specific firmware to make this work.

When I plugged it in again the external harddrives (four in all) that were daisy chained through the two firewire ports aren't being recognized anymore. I thought it was a bad cord or insufficient power but nothing worked. When I finally got around to looking at the System Profiler and check Firewire it said, "Unable to list firewire devices". I admit that I'm at a loss and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedGot a Powerbook G4 with a "messed up" HD. Couldn't fix it, so got a firewire drive and ran a bunch of utilities from my newer intel iMac. Cloned the Powerbook's drive to a USB hard drive, did all repairs on the USB drive, formatted the Powerbook, cloned the USB drive BACK to the Powerbook, but it just gives me the flashing question mark when I try to boot.
What is REALLY weird is I can boot my iMac FROM THE CLONE ON THE USB DRIVE and it works fine.In Drive Genius the Powerbook drive (in TDM) shows as a single drive, but if I go to "Repartition" then it shows 3 smaller partitions on the drive; I believe they're called "Apple Free Space" or something like that (can't check right now, I'm running Repair on it AGAIN at the moment).
I feel like I'm missing something simple, like the machine just doesn't see one thing that tells it "Oh, yeah! There's an operating system on this drive!" I have tried partitioning from Drive Genius and Disk Utility. Have done clones back and forth with Drive Genius, Disk Utility, and Carbon Copy Cloner. Same results each time.
Will the restore and AHT discs from a 1.2 GHz 12" iBook work in a 1 GHz 12" iBook? All I am interested in is the AHT.

I've connected the PB to my tower's Firewire PCI card, put the PB in target disk mode, and Windows prompts me with the found new hardware wizard. After the wizard finished, I did not see my PB in My Computer. It does not show up in Disk Management, either. It does appear in the Safely Remove Hardware window as "UNKNOWN MODEL AND VENDOR IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device", and in the Device Manager as "SBP2 Compliant IEEE 1394 device". How can I get this to show up so I can backup my old files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
