Hardware :: FireWire Faster Than USB For External HDD?

Mar 19, 2009

I was wondering if firewire is faster then usb for external hard drives. As I mentioned in another post I have a bunch of mac g4s. I want to make use out of but sata cards are very expensive if they're Mac compatible. What I was thinking is that since I can get a firewire sata adapter for $20 if not less it would be about the same cost as a good sata card and would be allot more likely to be compatible. I could just drill a few holes in a pci placeholder so I can run some cables through it to have the drives internal without compromising the case.

If I needed to I could swap the drives in between PC's allot easier then with a sata card. Because it would be far too expensive to get one for each system. My main concern is what the speed of firewire is since I've never used it before. If it's better then usb then it would probably be pretty feasable. I'm not going to be using them for any intensive software but I think it would be nice to have a good r/w speed.

IMac :: Connect Via Firewire To Sony TRV - 22 Camcoder - Need Which Firewire Cable

Oct 12, 2009

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

MacBook Pro :: Battery Drain Faster After Snow Leopard Update?

Jun 25, 2010

I'm a happy owner of a MBP 2010, 15" i5, 2.4GHz.

Before some days I noticed that Snow Leopard installed its update 10.6.4.

Well no big problem but I have a sense that the time remaining without using AC adapter has slightly fell. Before, using only firefox for example I could see about 6 hours remaining (some minutes after powering on my mac). Now it hardly shows about 4+.

Has any other noticed that?

Software :: Parallels 6 To Run 40% Faster/launch Windows 2x Faster Than Fusion

Sep 8, 2010

Parallels is expected to announce as early as Thursday the sixth major upgrade to its Windows virtualization software for Mac OS X, delivering a significant performance boost over its predecessor, as well as 80 other new features.

The new Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac has been shown on average to run 40 percent faster than last year's edition, according to people familiar with the matter. Those same people said that the upgrade -- expected to retail for the same $79.99 price as its predecessor -- will also feature Windows boot times that are roughly two times faster than version 3.1 of its primary competitor: VMWare Fusion.

VMware and Parallels have gone head to head in the virtualization market since 2008, when the Fusion product was first introduced. Parallels has existed since 2006, and both products retail for an identical prices. In a recent study, Parallels 5 was already found to be 30 percent faster on average than VMware Fusion 3.

Parallels 6 is also expected to showcase tighter integration with its users' natural environment, adopting support for the Mac OS X's keyboard shortcuts, Spotlight search engine, and Expose windows management features. Similarly, the upgrade will offer the option to automatically apply a Mac's parental controls to their corresponding Windows applications, according to those familiar with the product.

Another major focus for Parallels is said to be gaming. Version 6.0 will reportedly deliver up to two-fold performance improvements while adding support for Dolby 5.1 surround sound and better handling of 3G environments.

Parallels 6 will sport compatibility with an enhanced Parallels Mobile application that will offer users the option of remotely accessing their virtual machines on an iPad, as well as an iPhone or iPod touch.

Parallels Transporter, previously a standalone application that allowed users to migrate a virtual PC image to the Mac, will come built into the new release as well.

Earlier this week, Parallels Desktop 6 was spotted on the shelves of a Fry's Electronics store in California. The product has not yet been formally announced.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Hardware :: Unable To See Video Or Anything / Fans Spinning Faster And Faster

Aug 7, 2009

My father owns one of the original G5s, so its power pc not intel. Today while browsing an excel spreadsheet he says part of the screen turned black, then the monitor shut off, then the monitor came back on but not video. Mean while the fans started spinning out of control. Now when he tries to turn it on, he gets power, but all that happens is the fans spinning faster and faster and faster until he turns it off. No video or anything. Just speeding fans. He fears the CPUs died since they control the fans. Any suggestions? He also says the fans were spinning unusually fast these last few days.

IMac :: IMac I7 Faster Than Entry Mac Pro

Nov 12, 2009

Actually don't want to fuel any ongoing debate but to call attention on that both machines offer some points more or less about the same raw processor perfmormance on its 'stock' offering by apple (this means, in practice, the i7 comes with 1 GB more RAM):

MacPro Base Early 2009 (Xeon 2.66 4 cores, $2499):

iMac i7 ($2199):

source: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=818833

That said there a of course real life diffrences and diffrent targets, expandability replacements being the pro's main advantage, a bigger HD, more RAM, 27" monitor going for the iMac... all said I think the new iMac has given the permormance everyone expects from a current generation desktop computer, I'm waiting for the quads to be ready available here in Mexico to make the move , congrats to the new owners!

IMac :: Dual-core Still Faster Than Quad's?

Aug 17, 2010

I was taken aback by a recent review of the new iMac that has the dual-core i5 upgrade. There were claims that the dual-core i5 (i5-680 @ 3.6GHz) is still faster in quite a few applications than the quad-core i5 (i5-760 @ 2.8GHz)... Isn't Turbo Boost supposed to take it up to 3.33GHz? (yes, I know, it will only kick in if the temps allow it and it's still slightly less than 3.6 but you get my point)

Then, there was another article which claimed that even the Core i3-550 @ 3.2GHz is supposedly faster than the quad-core i5 @ 2.8GHz in a few scenarios. I realize that the Core i3 does not have Turbo Boost, but it does have Hyper-Threading which OS X sees as 4 (virtual) cores. The Core i5 does not have Hyper-threading, but it has 4 "actual" cores, and it also has Turbo Boost. Hmmm...

I have to take my iMac in because of a hardware issue and I was planning on upgrading to the Quad-core i5 for $275 extra ($300 minus student discount). I'm even contemplating jumping all the way to the i7 for another $180. Should I do this or just get another one w/ Core i3 3.2GHz? Towards the end of the article, Macworld even suggests not getting the Quad, unless "...you can take advantage of the few programs that exist today that can take advantage of the extra cores."

Future-proofing is not that important in my case, as I switch computers too often. Otherwise, quad-core would be the obvious choice, although we've been hearing the whole "Well, maybe not today, but in a year or two from now, you'll appreciate the fact that you got a Quad...", etc. since...well, almost 2 years ago.

OS X :: New IMac - Firewire 800 To 400 Not Working?

Nov 28, 2010

I finally decided to get a new 27" iMac in order to release the old G4 from it's pain.
What I wasn't aware of tho, was that there's no firewire 400 port on it anymore, which I need for all my peripherals (scanner, hard drives, etc.)

I bought a firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and while everything fits physically, there's no connection. The iMac refuses to find any hardware I connect to it...

I don't have anything that uses firewire 800, so I can't do a proper diagnostic. Thought I'd ask you people if you have any idea what might be the problem?
