Sometimes when I try to turn on my power mac G5 don't work. I have already changed the inside battery and also trying to reset the pmu. The only thing that works always is to disconnect the power cord from the back some minutes.

The other day my friend gave me his old macbook saying that it was broken and would only turn on sometimes. I have had this computer for 2 days and it has never turned on yet. He kept the hard drive so the machine does not currently have one. He also could not find the Mac OSX install CD, so I don't have one either. The battery is fully charged (the lights on the bottom of it are all on) and the light on the adapter is green. When I push the power button, nothing happens. No lights, no noise, nothing. I called apple and they told me that without a hard drive, the only way to test it would be to boot off of the Mac OSX disk by holding "c" when the computer is booting. The problem is, 1, I don't have a disk, and 2, how am I supposed to hold the c key while the computer is booting if it will not turn on? I have tried everything it says on the apple website and have tried it with different ram, with and a usb hard drive plugged in.
View 18 Replies View Relatedmy iMac won't turn on. The day before yesterday happened the same thing, but after a few tries with the power button, it eventually turned on - and all ok yesterday. Both the day before yesterday and today, the general power was turned off for some minutes, but the iMac wasn't running. So now, I've tried to reset the SMC, removing everything attached, but nothing.
At least I can clearly hear the tic tic tic button, probably of the timer, because I set up a schedule to let it turn on at a certain hour. What can I do? It's a white iMac, never had a problem.
My power went out while I was using my iMac today. I was wondering if this could have caused any damage to the computer and if I have to run any utilities etc to investigate?

I was working with a Power Mac G5 when this strange thing happened. I had pulled the CD drive from the machine to test out a problem with a new Mac Book computer(door wouldn't open on eject command). Discovered that that we had a wiring problem (I was using the bottom connector not the top). So I go and put the drive back into the Power Mac, turn it on & the only thing on my screen is a small square icon with a picture of the North & South American hemispheres on it, flashing. Can anyone enlighten me as to what just happen & what I can do to fix it?

My Macbook, I have just become aware that the light for power on isn't on, nor does it pulsate on standby. Everything else seems to be working normally, so I can live with this. But could this be a symptom of precursor of a more serious problem elsewhere?

I've been wondering about this for some time now but never took the time to ask. Why is it when the machine powers down, there is a very noticeable click from the power supply? This happens when it shuts down or goes to sleep mode. Before the Mac Pro, I've always built my own system and none of the OEM PSUs ever did this.

My macbook just turns off for no reason. I am just browsing the internet and then it turns off. This usually happens a little after I wake it up but sometimes it happens at random (like 5 mins ago). Sometimes when it turns off I try to turn it back on but it just turns off after a couple of minutes again. I thought it was the ram but I ran Remember and all tests passes.

I turned off my Mac, but nothing changed. The light stayed on. It was like living in an apartment above Time Square on New Year's Eve. I finally unplugged the damn thing. View 5 Replies View RelatedI retrofitted a Toshiba dvd/cdrw 2512 in my indigo ibook, following instructions found online. Opens fine with f12 key, and drilled hole for paperclip eject if need. Plays dvds and burns cds great (patchburn installed to burn from itunes too). But, the drive also opens when the ibook is turned on and when it comes out of sleep. Is this a glitch that can be fixed. Not a big deal but would like to have it not open if possible.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've kept a PPC with system 7.5.1 around for reference to prior financial records.Now chose to wipe it clean, along with 3 external HDs.
Erased internal disc, then erased three external discs.
Maybe that is enough, but I recall that if financial and personal data is on a drive, the only way to insure it is not accessible is to overwrite the drive.
How can that be done with 7.5.1???
What I did do is use Silver Lining to also erase the HD and THEN set a password to both start and open the drives. Will that suffice? or what??

Internal drive specs : 2 IBM 180GB IDE/ATA-5 Deskstar 8MB 180GXP 7200 rpm
There is also an ATA card that was installed to be able to run these drives in the G4 - don't have specs available right now. Is it physically possible to transfer these drives to the G5? Will I have to transfer the card also? Is it likely to cause any problems -compatibility , speed, etc? The drives are currently full of media - how risky is it to move them from one system to another?

Over the last few months I've noticed a trend with my dual 2GHz G5 at home, it often locks up and the fans go full-throttle. It sometimes happens when I'm using it and often when I leave it idling for a while. I've noticed that the CPU A and CPU B temperatures start around 120 degrees F when the machine is first powered up and steadily climbs to around 150. Is that normal? The dual 1.8GHz G5 I have at the office doesn't run hotter than 110 degrees. The fans haven't failed. Is there a coolant link? Is there anything I can do to diagnose this, or do I simply need to call AppleCare?

I have a G5 Dual 2.5 and the power light on the front (white) is lit but nothing happens when I press the power button. I was trying to reset the PRAM manually by pulling the battery and inplugging the unit because my startup shortcut keys were not working. I had seen it recommended to reset it by pulling the battery and reinstalling in other threads. I put the battery back after about 15 sec and plugged in back in. Now it wont start up.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am considering getting a used MB Pro for editing home movies. OK, its not Final Cut Pro stuff, but this will be the most demanding thing I use the computer for. In the past I have used iMovieHD and iDVD to make movies on my 12" PB G4 with a 1.25 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 MB or 128 MB (not sure which). This has worked fine, but I can tell its a little slow. I certainly can't plan on doing anything else at the same time.
But, now the previous generation MB Pros are going for $1000 (used or refurb) on eBay and I am considering getting something like a 2.4 GHz / 2 - 4 GB with a 256 or 512 MB Nvidia 8600 graphics card.

I want to get a battery backup for my PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz PPC, but the numbers confuse me. the UPS selector tool on APC's website suggests I can get away with one that runs at 800VA.i dont need it to last long, I'm really just looking for something that will protect from surges, condition the power, and give me enough time to shut down in case of a power outage. I wouldnt need more than a few minutes, and I dont expect more than a few minutes power supply.

I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.
The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

I have a 2005 G5 PowerMac. It has been locking up lately. Tonight it will not boot. Everytime I turn it on I get to the apple screen and the circle keeps going round and round. I then followed the directions to reset the PMU and I disconnected the second hard drive. Now it will still not boot and gets to the apple screen, circles a couple of times then locks up. I have disconnected everything except the monitor, keyboard and mouse and still have the same problem. The largest issue is the CD drive will not open so I cannot attempt to reload the OS or anything else that requires the CD drive. I do not know if there is a manual way to open the drive. I have searched the help forums and only see the keyboard as an option. I have read many posts that the 9800 video card is a problem - we have an ATI 800 XT and I have not read anything hear about that card being an issue.

office is upstairs so i bought a Macbook pro which i can use downstairs while watching tv or in the bedroom.... I bought my girlfriend a macbook for the same purpose.. I plan on buying a dell ultrasharp 24" monitor and keep it in the office that way either one of us can go and plug our laptops in and use it at the desk. I want to keep a power supply up there for both of us to use, can i buy a spare 85w power supply and will it be safe for her macbook?
