My macbook just turns off for no reason. I am just browsing the internet and then it turns off. This usually happens a little after I wake it up but sometimes it happens at random (like 5 mins ago). Sometimes when it turns off I try to turn it back on but it just turns off after a couple of minutes again. I thought it was the ram but I ran Remember and all tests passes.
View 11 RepliesI have a weird problem when i try to connect to the internet with my MBP. I run on Lion (10.7.4) and it the problem appeared a few days ago, internet was working before. So here's the deal : Airport is working fine, and when I check my network settings and ask for a diagnostic, the assistant tells me i AM connected to the internet and claims it works alright. But when I open Safari or Chrome, I can't go on any site, because each time it says the operation timed out. My family has others computers connected to the same modem and they all have a working connection.
I tried entering manually the address to check if it was a simple DNS problem but it isn't. I tried restarting the modem and my computer, turning Airport on and off, deleting all the network datas my computer had saved to set up this network as a new one, adding a new location, renewing the DHCP lease.

So to preface my problem let me just say that ive got my own macbook which works on the same wireless network with no faults at all, so i assume its not an error with the networking hardware. For xmas i bought my parents a macbook, recently (not sure how recently as theyve only just told me its happening) they can be browsing the web then all of a sudden the internet takes ages to load, it stalls on 'trying to connect' for a long time (40+ for each web page).
Ive tried using firefox and the same thing happens so it looks like its not safari specific, during this time i cannot ping google.com through a terminal either or if i can the response time is unbelievably slow. Now, ive tried disabling ipv6, ive set the dns servers to opendns and none of this has fixed it. if i click on the airport utility and turn it off and the back on it fixes the problem for a short period of time before it happens again.
Is there any way I can safely browse the internet on my Mac using an unsecured wireless network? I know people do it all the time now and I'm wondering if there are any precautions I can take like when I'm paying bills for buying something online with my credit card?
View 17 Replies View Relatedi have an imac 21' with OS 10.5 leopard and all the updates installed and everything is supposed to be running smoothly.and i use the iStat pro to track everything. a week ago, i noticed something really strange. something is downloading on my computer and eating all the bandwidth to the extent i can't even browse the internet. i quit all the programs running but still it was not faltering. the only thing that seemed to work is to turn off airport and turning it on again, is there any other way to know what is doing that to me and how to stop it. i read somewhere about littlesnitch but it did not help me. any suggesstions on what does this and how to manage it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently completely a wire pull from the network hub (Dell Power Connect?) in the office of a church, to a computer in a different room of the church. I plugged in the cat5e cable to the computer, it connects to the network, computers on the network can access it's public folders and remote access it, but the computer cannot browse the internet using the built-in ethernet plug. The wireless-internet on the computer allows me to navigate the internet just fine.
With the Airport turned off, and the ethernet plugged in, I can ping [URL] with 0% packet loss, but when I try to connect to google on Safari or Firefox it says that Safari/Firefox cannot connect to the server.
I present to you today a baffling conundrum which has been vexing me for months. Around Christmas my sister got a huge raise and bonus, which resulted in a flurry of new technology rushing into the household. All at the same time we set up a new wireless router, (for our wireless modem) an Xbox 360 and SnowLeopard for my MacBook Pro.
I noticed that late at night, after the Xbox had been turned off, my internet connection started getting strange. without the system acknowledging anything had happened (all 5 bars in the airport symbol, my AIM client still claimed i was connected) i would suddenly be unable to load anything (in any browser) or send or receive any IMs.
I would turn my airport off and immediately on again, then the problem would be solved. then, exactly five minutes later, it would happen again. I've been able to connect this "funky-internet phenomenon" as I like to call it, to the Xbox being OFF. I am a walking detector for when the machine gets powered down. this only happens when Xbox is off, and the second it is turned back on, my internet stops doing this.
I've noticed that I have to turn off Internet Sharing in order to video chat with my friends on iChat AV 4.0.3. Is there anyway possible that I don't have to always turn off Internet Sharing to have video chats? Regular text chatting works fine when Internet Sharing is turned on, but not video chat.

The other day my friend gave me his old macbook saying that it was broken and would only turn on sometimes. I have had this computer for 2 days and it has never turned on yet. He kept the hard drive so the machine does not currently have one. He also could not find the Mac OSX install CD, so I don't have one either. The battery is fully charged (the lights on the bottom of it are all on) and the light on the adapter is green. When I push the power button, nothing happens. No lights, no noise, nothing. I called apple and they told me that without a hard drive, the only way to test it would be to boot off of the Mac OSX disk by holding "c" when the computer is booting. The problem is, 1, I don't have a disk, and 2, how am I supposed to hold the c key while the computer is booting if it will not turn on? I have tried everything it says on the apple website and have tried it with different ram, with and a usb hard drive plugged in.
View 18 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Seagate Free Agent drives, I couldn't find a post among the hundreds readily and I need sleep. Last night, my drive stayed on, lights and all, all freaking night long. I turned off my Mac, but nothing changed. The light stayed on. It was like living in an apartment above Time Square on New Year's Eve. I finally unplugged the damn thing. I was hoping it would fix itself overnight, but it didn't. It seems to be doing a good job of backing up with time machine, but the *(^%$ light won't turn off.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI retrofitted a Toshiba dvd/cdrw 2512 in my indigo ibook, following instructions found online. Opens fine with f12 key, and drilled hole for paperclip eject if need. Plays dvds and burns cds great (patchburn installed to burn from itunes too). But, the drive also opens when the ibook is turned on and when it comes out of sleep. Is this a glitch that can be fixed. Not a big deal but would like to have it not open if possible.

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy iMac won't turn on. The day before yesterday happened the same thing, but after a few tries with the power button, it eventually turned on - and all ok yesterday. Both the day before yesterday and today, the general power was turned off for some minutes, but the iMac wasn't running. So now, I've tried to reset the SMC, removing everything attached, but nothing.
At least I can clearly hear the tic tic tic button, probably of the timer, because I set up a schedule to let it turn on at a certain hour. What can I do? It's a white iMac, never had a problem.
What is the quickest way to check my internet connection speed in Tiger?On a PC, I've always known it's as simple as hovering the cursor over the connection icon in the taskbar. It's been like that at least since XP if not earlier.In OSX though (Tiger at least) the Airport icon in the menubar doesn't give any of that information.

View 4 Replies View Relatedecond, my sound card (m-audio revolution 7.1) now doesnt work properly as the sound is fuzzy when i play music. i even tried to reintall the drivers but then i got NO SOUND and the analog out was disabled in sound preferences. i uninstalled the drivers and am left with no sound now. when i started up, the time was gone and my internet didnt work. the network preferences didnt even allow me to check built-in ethernet. i restarted and now everything works again *knock on wood*. is there any way i can go back to 10.4.9? also, how well does 10.5 work on PPCs? would my dual 1 GHz G4 run slower with it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to browse my Intranet (with Firefox and Safari) using the NetBIOS server name, for example, server-x, but when I type [URL] into Firefox I get an error (Firefox can't find the server at server-x). If I type the server IP address I can browse it well and if I use the smbutil lookup server-x command I get the correct IP over Terminal. Is there a way to browse that correctly in MacOS?

MBP: Parallels running XP: no problems going to [URL:..]
ok.. my old XP laptop as a last resort: no problems at all.
So what could be happening here, and what could I do about it. Tried rebooting my Macbook Pro 15" and AEBS and ADSL router.

I cannot browse by name to certain web sites like google, yahoo. I can browse to others. This is true of both Safari and Firefox. I can, however put the ip address I get by doing a ping on the same machine into the browser and go straight there. By virtue of it being both browsers, I have ruled out the application. By virtue of being able to ping, I have ruled out dns name resolution. It's just the browser that can't get there.

I tend to just leave my new Mac Pro on all the time so I don't have to re-open apps and get all my windows back into their proper Spaces, but I wonder if there's an easy way to disable the internet while I'm not using it, short of disconnecting the ethernet cable. I have a few older eMacs, some with airport cards and some without. My question/problem: I want to hook an eMac 10.4.11 directly into the Time Capsule to access the internet (the time capsule is acting as an extension of our wireless network). I have done this before successfully using an airport extreme, however, I am not successful to date in doing this with time capsule. It has been a while since I set up a computer this way. My question is am I missing a trick (using ethernet cord into LAN port), or is it not possible.
