Power Mac G5 :: System Freezes Due To Overheating?

Dec 18, 2007

Over the last few months I've noticed a trend with my dual 2GHz G5 at home, it often locks up and the fans go full-throttle. It sometimes happens when I'm using it and often when I leave it idling for a while. I've noticed that the CPU A and CPU B temperatures start around 120 degrees F when the machine is first powered up and steadily climbs to around 150. Is that normal? The dual 1.8GHz G5 I have at the office doesn't run hotter than 110 degrees. The fans haven't failed. Is there a coolant link? Is there anything I can do to diagnose this, or do I simply need to call AppleCare?

IMac :: Freezes After 15 Minutes Of Being On - Overheating?

Aug 21, 2009

My Imac freezes up a lot, usually after 10 to 15 minutes of being on. I suspect it has something to do with overheating. I have to get my data off of the drive before I take it into the Apple store for fear that they will will just replace the drive and all will be lost. I have a fan blowing on it now in the back and am copying data onto an external drive little by little until it freezes up.

I bought it last fall and have a 3 year warranty on it and this will be my second time bringing it in for repair. The first time it was a problem right out of the box when I brought it home and it was replaced. It's a 3.06 processor, 24 inch screen. I am not impressed by the hardware reliability and the all in one system. I am regretting buying the imac after being a PC user for so long and I am using my Windows PC to write this. I suspect the cooling system could be better on my IMAC given the compressed footprint.

MacBook Pro :: Its Overheating At Power Plug

May 4, 2012

I'm getting overheating at the point where power enters the computer (the little cylindrical device that plugs into the magnetized power port.) The transformer feels fine, as does the cable, but that cylindrical plug gets way two hot to touch. Other answers relating to this subject indicate that charging an almost exhausted battery while also using the computer will cause overheating in the transformer, but the transformer feels fine. It's that little cylindrical plug that collects an amazing and worrisome amount of heat.

Hardware :: Imac G5 Overheating - New Power Supply?

Sep 13, 2008

I was using my Imac G5 (pre iSight) and it suddenly shut down. It smelled of burnt plastic so I immediately disconnected the power and all accessories, laid the computer down, and took off the cover. Everything seemed normal, except the smell of burnt plastic coming from the fan and faintly from the power supply. I took the metal piece covering the fan and hard drive, and attempted to clean the fan. After about an hour I put the cover back on, plugged my computer back in, and started it up. It again shut down after about half an hour of use. What's wrong? Do I need a new power supply? I checked the Apple Recall and my serial fits, but the symptoms do not follow the ones in the recall.

Power Mac G5 :: Overheating In Idle Mode - Fans Blow Harder

Nov 6, 2007

I have a G5 dual 2gig and in idle mode it seems to a be slightly overheating as my fans start to blow harder and I get my mouse sticking I am running the latest version of Tiger with 3.5gigs of ram I did post in the IDvD, Logic Pro, and the Final cut pro forums the impact of an upgrade of 8gig of ram on my system whether my apps would run better and the system as a whole.

But I have not been able to get any feed back on this that was clear and I was asked to try here on this forum so here I am. I deeply love my G5 and what it can do I am just wondering if it is working at its most optimum I do regularly do my house keeping i.e. repairing permission and occasionally using Tech tool Pro to look over the system but nothing out of the ordinary jumps out. I have a screen shot of my activity monitor and cpu monitor but I do not know how to attach it.

Windows On Mac :: System Overheating In Bootcamp?

Oct 23, 2010

I currently use an iMac i7 with Windows XP SP3 installed on the Bootcamp partition. I've noticed recently that when I'm on the Windows side for a long period of time the iMac gets quite hot and the fans are raging with a loud roar! Obviously, this does not happen on the Mac OS side. I got quite concerned, so I restarted it in Mac OS to check the iStat. The CPU fan was over 2000rpm and some of the temps just reached over 60 degrees C. So I decided to keep it in Mac for the time being and everything decided to calm down to the 'normal' temperatures. I've searched Mroogle / Google for solutions and it appears people are using smc Fan Control for Windows to increase the fan speeds. I'm not sure if this is the right path to go down where I can override the fan speeds and just put up with the fan noise... but is there another solution? Are there any drivers released to help deal with this issue or is it a windows problem?

Mac Mini :: System Overheating And Shutting Down

Jan 14, 2010

I've googled to see if I can find a solution to this but not had any luck - wonder if you could help. My Mac Mini is 1.5Ghz PowerPc G4, 512Mb RAM, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago and in the past while it's really been playing up a bit. It first started overheating and shutting down when I was doing really resource intensive stuff - for example, opening a large amount of RAW image files. However, it's now started taking to shutting down when I'm doing normal browsing, using Spotify etc The machine also tends to hang a lot, and I can't really stream videos very well either. The vents at the back of the Mac definitely aren't blocked and there's plenty of space around the machine to let the air circulate.

Mac Pro :: Under Desk - Overheating - System Shuts Down

Aug 10, 2010

So I am about to order a 2010 Mac Pro. I am looking for opinions from users who own or have owned any recent model (last 2 years) Mac Pro in terms of how much heat they throw off and how much open air space they need. The reason I ask is my custom desk at home has one of those wooden "compartments" that a tower or workstation computer can slide into. If I put the Mac Pro in there, it will be exposed on the front, but the top and all sides will be surrounded. I am sure you have all seen the type of desk slot I am talking about. Its a bit like putting your mac pro in a coffin. with only one side open. do you think this will be a major problem and cause overheating? Or result in the Mac Pro shutting down? If so do you have any suggestions because my desk area does not have any open room for the computer stand with all open air around it.

MacBook :: Randomly Shutting Down - System Is Overheating

Feb 11, 2010

My Macbook is 1.5 years old (13in, white, 2 GHz). About two weeks ago, it would randomly shut off. It would restart fine, but shut off sooner. Sometimes, it wouldn't even restart. Now, it's at the point where when I power it on, it rarely restarts past the white apple start-up screen.

My thought is that it is overheating. Are there any more ideas? What can I do to save my macbook?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing System Preferences Freezes Entire System

Jul 3, 2012

I recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!

I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?

I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this!

Power Mac G5 :: Fan Runs On High And Won't Wake From Sleep - It Freezes?

Dec 10, 2007

I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.

Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.

My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.

I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.

The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.

Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.

OS X :: Macbook Pro Freezes With Msg Restart Computer By Pressing Power Button

Apr 8, 2009

I have a macbook pro, bought it May last year(2008). I don't know much about computers, but I loved the transition between pc and mac, had no trouble with it, loved to work with it, until now. I had noticed it became slower like 3 weeks ago, and a week ago, it started to freeze up on me followed by a message that said please restart your computer by pressing the power button and the screen becomes dark. When I try to restart it again, it takes a while because it shuts down again and again, until the 10th time it works. The store told me to clean intall, which I did yesterday, it seemed to have worked, it was faster for sure, but today it happened again, 3 times! Has this happened to anyone? Does somebody know what to do?

IMac :: Semi Frequent Freezes - Force Manual Power Down

Jan 20, 2010

I have an older iMac, 2006 white version, running leopard. I am one of the many people who experience semi-frequent freezes which forces me to manually power the machine down. After much research it seems everyone has diagnosed the problem has hardware, specifically the graphics card running hot. I installed smcFancontrol and have ran it for four to five months. Since then I have experienced maybe 4 or 5 freezes, but the freeze occurs while doing nothing "heavy", just browsing in safari or chrome. Has there been any updated or new information concerning this problem? I have scanned the web a little and can't really find anything really recent. The most recent article/discussion i have found is roughly a year old.

MacBook Pro :: Freezes Randomly And Beeps When Coming Out Of Power Down Sleep

Jun 27, 2014

So, I have a late 2011 MBP 2GH i7, OSX 10.9.3. 500GB HD 16 BG 1600 Mhz DDR3.

The problems started a while ago when the computer started freezing at random times. The mouse would move and there was no "pinwheel" but the computer was unresponsive. When I closed the screen the power was still on and the screen did not shut off. The only way to reset the computer was to hold the power button and do a hard reset. I don't remember if I replaced the RAM from 4BG to 8GB Crucial Memory before or after the computer started freezing, either way, shortly after or around the time when I replaced the ram the hard drive also failed.

I replaced the HD with I believe a Seagate hybrid drive with a small solid state segment. This whole time the computer is still freezing and now since I have a hybrid drive the Apple store can't support because it's not factory specs and MacMall here in Santa Monica can't find anything wrong with the hardware or software after running all of their tests.

At this time I have a feeling it is the ram so I purchase a new 16GB Crucial RAM. Everything is great till it yet once again freezes in the same way as before BUT!! Now if the computer sleeps because the battery run's low, when I plug it in and the computer reboots (grey opaque screen with the vertical lines as the bottom) it starts beeping 3 times. I hard reset via the power button and the computer boots up as normal (although a little slower).

OS X :: Installing Tiger Over Leopard / Freezes - Hard Reboot From Power Switch

Oct 31, 2010

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I was rung Tiger with, then I installed Leopard 10.5. I use this as a second computer. All is fine except that my Epson scanner does not work with 10.5. I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?

OS X :: System Freezes And Display Goes Blank

I recently upgraded from my Macbook to a refurbished Macbook Pro and since the day I got it it has been giving me problems. Applications quite suddenly all the time and the system freezes and runs sluggish. The biggest prob is the display. It goes black and won't come back on. Sometimes when it goes blank you can see faintly if you look carefully and you can hear sounds. It slowly deteriorates from a once a week occurrence to a daily one until it won't turn on at all. I reinstall everything once a month. I took my computer to the mac store they ran all the diagnostic tests they have and said it is not a hardware problem. I have now wiped out all of my non-apple applications and the problem is back.
