OS X V10.7 Lion :: Make The Changes To The Hosts File Permanent?
Jun 5, 2012
I noticed that in Lion my /etc/hosts and /private/hosts gets overwritten at boot time. This is rather annoying as I would use said file to store the IP to name translations of some local computers. Before editing I would always become root and use nano to edit the file.how do I make the changes to the hosts file permanent?
I tried to edit the hosts file in Lion with: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts.Then entered Password. The window came up blank evev though I know there is data there.
I need to add something to the HOSTS file, here is the error message that appears when I try to log in. TextEdit[190:c0b] *** CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1100 (0x44c) 'Permission denied', port = 0x4403, name = 'com.apple.TextEdit.ServiceProvider' See /usr/include/servers/bootstrap_defs.h for the error codes. Using: sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts It does open the file, but it is empty. Should it be empty? I can not save it after editing it. But, if i use sudo open -t /etc/hosts OR $ sudo nano /private/etc/hosts It doesn't give me any error, and it also opens the HOSTS file. But its empty! Im using MAc Osx 10.5 Any ideas of what's going on?
My computer will be shared for a couple of weeks and there are certain websites that i need to block... Let's say i want to block facebook, heres what i did:
Opened up terminal, then typed 'sudo nano /etc/hosts' Added '127.0.0.1 facebook.com' on the bottom, having them separated with TAB instead of spaces Pressed ctrl+o and enter to save the file, then ctrl-x to quit the nano thing. Then i typed 'dscacheutil -flushcache' for changes to immediatelly take place Quit terminal
Am i doing something wrong here? I can still open facebook.com in Opera after those steps.... Am i missing something?
I can resize columns in list view and drag them to the order that I want, but that only lasts until I close the window. If I open that folder again in (list view is the default), the column widths and arrangement return to their original configuration. How to make changes in individual folder windows and make them permanent?
I'm transferring my Wordpress website from one hosting service to another. I've been instructed by the new one that I have to edit the MyHost local file non my Mac. Here's the link I was sent: [URL]. How to find it and modify it?

I just downloaded a video game off f the internet, and its a torrent file, which I need to be made into a .iso file. I know I can use imgburn through parallels, but I have no Windows OS disc for parallels to work. Does anybody know if there is a way that I can get this torrent file( which is essentially a lot of little files) converted into a .iso file so I can burn it and play it?
On my system (10.6.8) I can edit /etc/hosts and the changes take effect immediately. The problem is that every time I reboot, my changes are overwritten.

I was trying to install a software and edit hosts' files in Terminal to finish the whole process. However I can't find the location of hosts even searching on the net. I tried to put /etc/hosts and /private/etc/hosts/, they were 'no such file or directory' and 'permission denied' !
there is a site that i frequent and the password was changed on me but strangely i can still access the site...i am attributing that to the fact that i have the cookie store don my firefox browser (when i try to login with my safari browser with the same password it does not work anymore)

Should I let it run down before plugging it in or plug it in whenever I can? Does it make any sort of difference to the life of the new internal battery?
Does anyone know how to get the bookmarks for safari drop down menu to stay in the menu row for finder even when safari is not main application being accessed?
I've been trying to find a solution to this for ages, with no success. I'm not even sure it's possible, but I thought I'd continue to try. What I want to do is change the language setting in Pages permanently. I've had answers telling me about the language setting, and International Input menus and so on, but I'm familiar with changing the language setting, as I write a lot of documents in French and in German, but I write more in English, so what I want is to be able to permanently change the setting so that every time I open a new document, the language is set to British English.
Is there a way to making certain settings in the guest account permanent? For example, I would like the setting where you tap the trackpad to click (tap to click) to be permanently enabled... How do I do this?
I rent out a cabin and I would like the guest account that renters use to have a permanent background. Is this possible? What I am trying to do is allow renters to upload their photos to a shared folder (already set up). This shared folder would be a compendium of photos that renters have uploaded, and the background would change every 5 seconds to show off all the great pictures. Possible?
The next avenue I will explore is instead of using a guest account just creating a normal account for renters, but for obvious reasons I am wary of doing this
The default signature in outgoing messages from iCloud is "sent from iCloud". I can change that on a new email but that will work only once; in the next email the signagture is again "sent from iCloud". Is it possible to create a new default signatute? Is it possible to create this new signature in color?
My primary workstation is now a New MacPro (late 12013) so the internal drive is too small to store my iTunes Library. I have backed up the main iTunes library from my laptop to an external drive. But I will now be working mostly at the NMP -which is ethernet wired (as I often upload/dowwnload extremely large files)
I would like to designate the external drive as the main repository for the iTunes Library for the NMP. I see that many of my albums already reside in the iTunes Library on the internal drive for the NMP. I would like to free up that storage space and have NO permanent content on that internal drive.
I think that using the REMOTE APP is intended for WIRELESS usage. So, ideally (while working) I would prefer to access iTunes app from the NMP (which is also wired to a sound system) and choose CONTENT from the external drive. So how do I clear the internal drive of all iTunes content and use the external drive exclusively?

I was just rummaging through my cupboard looking for me certificates when I found it. And it fit's pretty alright. It will have to do for now. It a case for my Razer mousepad, the Destructor. It's hard on the surface and it'd do a nice job of protecting it over minor bumps but nothing major. What I like about it is that it's slim. When I first bought the Destructor mousepad couple of years ago, I remembered thinking the case would be a good case for laptops. Had a 15" HP that time and it wont fit. Not to mention, it was too thick. Well, I snapped a few pics. And oh, its a 13 MBA if anyone is wondering.
I got a 2008 MacBook that has a misbehaving backlight. Just recently, the backlight refused to go on for any amount of time.Toggling the brightness from (0) to (1) bar turned it on for varyings amounts of time lower than one second.I continued to toggle the brightness in this fashion to use the computer for a time.Occasionally, the screen would remain lit for a little over a second and dim again.I changed the power settings from power saving to performance and back to power saving. Then, I opened up Chrome and the backlight remained on.It still remains on, as I am somewhat unwilling to test opening and closing the screen.I can, however, now vary screen brightness fully.tl;dr - Backlight was finicky, but is now functioning normally.I suspect the backlight is going to malfunction completely in the near future.
I replaced a file inside of the contents of an application and I was wondering if there is a way I could lock the file or somethin so it never gets replaced.. is this possible in any way? if not.. what else can I do to make sure the file works after updates?
If I needed/wanted to start a brand new iTunes Match file and completely wipe out the old one how would I go about that? Also when I go to do an update the order is such that a download starts of the current [incorrect] Match file and then the update/upload follows-why is that? (It seems to me that they should be individual commands.)
