I'm transferring my Wordpress website from one hosting service to another. I've been instructed by the new one that I have to edit the MyHost local file non my Mac. Here's the link I was sent: [URL]. How to find it and modify it?

On my system (10.6.8) I can edit /etc/hosts and the changes take effect immediately. The problem is that every time I reboot, my changes are overwritten.

iMac 27" i7 Quad Core 2.8Ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.2)
i have a mac book pro ( 15 inch, 2.4ghz, late 08)
the memory limit is 4 GB. Is this an OS limit which will be blown away with snow leopard, or is it a hardware limit, which will remain regardless of 64bit OS?
other MBPs have 6 or 8GB limits, which makes me think they may be hardware related
How much ram will my iMac (5,1) running 10.6.2 address? The limit was 3GB with 10.5.

We have a user with a large number of folders of saved mail stored locally (on my mac). I haven't counted the number of folders in the list in Mail, but the last 6, alphabetically, do not display in the list of folders. I can, by going into ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes (I think it's in Mailboxes) see the missing folders and even open the messages in them, the folders simply don't display in the Mail app (v4.5).
Does anyone know if there is (there appears to be) some limit to the number of folders Mail can display? If so, is there some workaround to get it to display them so the user can access his mail through Mail app? why these particular folders are not showing up.
It seems like it must be a limit issue since it's not chronological (i.e., they aren't the most recent folders created) but alphabetical (they would, if displayed, be the last 6 folders in the list).

I have the following ulimit limits. The number 532 seems to be from kern.maxproc. But I have ~/.launchd.conf that sets maxproc to a larger value.
~$ ulimit -H -a

data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited

Normally consider myself quite able to troubleshoot my own problems, but I can't for the life of me figure out what to do here, and can't seem to find many others who have the same problem. The drag-and-drop function in Snow Leopard appears to be either broken or deliberately crippled. My work sees me having to move a lot of files from folder to folder, and I've discovered that, as of fairly recently, I can no longer drag-and-drop more than 85 objects from one folder to another. Up to 85, everything works just fine -- but if I select 86, upon dragging I get an "X-ed out" icon, like the "no smoking" or "no parking" circle with a line through it.
I'm not quite sure what to do about this, but would be very curious and appreciative if anyone else has the same issue, or has figured out how to solve it! This, combined with the lack of a "cut" feature in OS X has begun to really impede my workflow.
Is there a limit to the number of contacts in my address book? Limit to number in a group?

I would like to host, what should I add?Private files are hidden.whare is /private/etc/hosts ?
Info:MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I need to add something to the HOSTS file, here is the error message that appears when I try to log in. TextEdit[190:c0b] *** CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1100 (0x44c) 'Permission denied', port = 0x4403, name = 'com.apple.TextEdit.ServiceProvider' See /usr/include/servers/bootstrap_defs.h for the error codes. Using: sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts It does open the file, but it is empty. Should it be empty? I can not save it after editing it. But, if i use sudo open -t /etc/hosts OR $ sudo nano /private/etc/hosts It doesn't give me any error, and it also opens the HOSTS file. But its empty! Im using MAc Osx 10.5 Any ideas of what's going on?

I've just added a couple of entries to my HOSTS file to test whether it works the same way in Mac OSX (SL) as it does in Windoze.
I've found it does... and it doesn't.
My 4 test entries are totally blocked if I use Safari, but they're NOT blocked in Firefox.
Could someone tell me in simple terms why this is so, and if there's something I can do to make Firefox obey the HOSTS redirects?
My computer will be shared for a couple of weeks and there are certain websites that i need to block... Let's say i want to block facebook, heres what i did:
Opened up terminal, then typed 'sudo nano /etc/hosts' Added '127.0.0.1 facebook.com' on the bottom, having them separated with TAB instead of spaces Pressed ctrl+o and enter to save the file, then ctrl-x to quit the nano thing. Then i typed 'dscacheutil -flushcache' for changes to immediatelly take place Quit terminal
Am i doing something wrong here? I can still open facebook.com in Opera after those steps.... Am i missing something?
I noticed that in Lion my /etc/hosts and /private/hosts gets overwritten at boot time. This is rather annoying as I would use said file to store the IP to name translations of some local computers. Before editing I would always become root and use nano to edit the file.how do I make the changes to the hosts file permanent?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to edit the hosts file in Lion with: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts.Then entered Password. The window came up blank evev though I know there is data there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install a software and edit hosts' files in Terminal to finish the whole process. However I can't find the location of hosts even searching on the net. I tried to put /etc/hosts and /private/etc/hosts/, they were 'no such file or directory' and 'permission denied' !

I recently upgrade my leopard to snow leopard and when ever i put the computer to sleep it takes quite a while for it to actually go into sleep mode.
Now I tried pmset with no success like so: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
Why does snow leopard take so long to go to sleep, does anyone else have this issue? Is there anything else i could try to fix it. It says hibernatemode is 0 in pmset info table.
On my Intel mac mini (march 2009), it took about 2 hours to install Snow Leopard. The whole time the CD drive was making some weird noises too. Wonder if I somehow messed it up when upgrading the ram.
View 20 Replies View RelatedIt takes 10.6.1 35 seconds to go to sleep. Anyone else having issues like this? It takes in about a second. I could shutdown faster than it takes to sleep but damn.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Snow Leopard I noticed that my shut down was very fast, about 2 seconds. Now all of a sudden it takes 10-15 seconds to shut down.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using Mac mail. I have a hotmail acct that I use MBOX mail as a go-between between it and Mac Mail so I can use IMAP and get me hotmail folders etc. It's working great escept for the fact that sometimes there are long delays where I don't receive emails that are coming in. Sometime not even when I click "get mail." I have to right click on the account and click "get info." That will start showing all the data on the account and usually bring in the new emails that have been sitting there for a while.

So my last project - the first one on my new 3.2 octo with 20 GB RAM - and I'm getting out of memory errors in FCP. I thought at first it was a permissions or bad preferences problem, but it turns out that I actually pushed Final Cut too far and it exceeded it's 4GB RAM limit. does anyone have any info from Apple about when they might upgrade FCP to use more RAM?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is pretty much what the title states... I have the first generation macbook with the intel processor, and I was wondering why there is a limit on the amount of RAM I can put in? I have maxed it out to 2gb at the moment, and whilst I don't desperately need 4gb, i would be nice to have a faster macbook if I wanted one.

I have read there is something built into OSX that can do this at the command line level (ipfw or something?)
I'm going to upgrade my Core Duo Macbook Pro in the next few days with a new 320gb HDD. My external disk for which also includes my Time Machine Backup is only 250GB. Obviously one is larger than the other, will this cause a problem? If so is it possible for me to put a limit on how much space Time Machine can take up?
If for example I tell it to exclude /System and /Library from the backup can I still in future when install a fresh copy of OS X, restore from a Time Machine backup?
