MacBook Pro :: Early 2011: Location Of Hosts - 'permission Denied'
Apr 9, 2012
I was trying to install a software and edit hosts' files in Terminal to finish the whole process. However I can't find the location of hosts even searching on the net. I tried to put /etc/hosts and /private/etc/hosts/, they were 'no such file or directory' and 'permission denied' !
Using a Macbook Pro and Lion, suddenly unable to save Pages files. Tried verifying and repairing permissions, restarting program and laptop, tested various kinds of files, all say permission denied. unable to save changes also. Useless unless I can save my work.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.3), Pages worked fine for two years
I did a clean 10.6 install and forgot to backup the ssh key. Now when I try to ssh into the server i get this: Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Warning: Permanently added 'macpro,10.0.1.20' (RSA) to the list of known hosts. Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).
I'm attempting to duplicate the functionality exposed by Apple's signature server, by entering (/private/etc/hosts) into the command line of Terminal Bash. I'm doing this to downgrade the firmware in my iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 to 3.0.1. I've been receiving a (permission denied) response for my efforts. I've gone into "Disk Utility and added myself as a "root user". However, that doesn't seem to correct the permission denied issue. Perhaps I didn't correctly add myself as a root user.
I've used sudo before successfully, but suddenly it doesn't work anymore! For example, I try setting a shutdown timer using:
Code: sudo shutdown -h +60 or sudo pmset disksleep 30 or even just sudo and get Code: sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied Just typing sudo alone results in the same error.
I've tried searching and following other threads on this topic to no avail. Repairing permissions from disk utility didn't help either.
I have this card reader. I have this brand new SD card. When I plug the card reader in and put the SD card in. The card reader blinks the light and then, on my disk utility. All I see is this: So it does not show up on the desktop. It seems I cant mount it. I cant erase it or anything...it says "permission denied" when I try to format it. I have a Mac Pro too.
I'm trying to configure a mac as a smb server and am encountering numerous difficulties in doing so. While I managed to get around most of them, one remains unsettled. I have my samba server running and what to add new users and passwords. Yet, when I want to use useradd or adduser, neither of the commands are recognized in the Mac OS X 10.6 terminal.
Moreover, the smbpasswd command is either non recognized when using sudo or, when logged in as a root, I get: sh: /usr/bin/smbpasswd: Permission denied I also tried adding users through webmin, but I can only synchronize does on the Mac and when I want to modify the passwords, I get: Access control violation: Failed to change password using smbpasswd:
I just got a MacBook Pro in November, and I've been having so many problems trying to do command line stuff that it makes me want to cry. Right now I'm trying to reinstall lua because it stopped working right, and I'm trying to install MacPorts to do so. When I tried to run the command: sudo port -d selfupdate, to update the ports like the MacPorts website says to do, I got a couple of permission denied messages and something about "can't find package Pextlib 1.0". So I looked up the Pextlib thing and was following the instructions at this site but when I try to edit pkgIndex.tcl file I get a permission denied message again.
I tried repairing permissions with disk utility, but that didn't work. I ran "ls -lad /" and got: drwxrwxr-t 33 root admin 1190 Dec 26 17:44 / and I ran "id" and got: uid=501(myname) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),204(_developer),100(_lpoperator),98(_lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),80(admin),79(_appse rverusr),61(localaccounts),12(everyone),401(com.apple.access_screensharing),402(com.apple.sharepoint .group.1)
I am trying to install Symfony (a php framework) locally and have installed MAMP.
Symfony asks me to run this command Code: php lib/vendor/symfony/data/bin/symfony generate:project PROJECT_NAME but I get Code: -bash: /usr/bin/php: Permission denied now, in /usr/bin/php there is an alias to the location of php which is under MAMP in bin/php5.3/bin and this may be a reason for the error.
Even Code: php -v gives Code: -bash: /usr/bin/php: Permission denied I tried to login as root, but still nothing.
I'm trying to configure MacPorts to install Wine. According to this site: [URL]. I need to enter the command echo export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH$' 'export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:$MANPATH | sudo tee -a /etc/profile but this just gets me the error message: sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied. I only have one account on this computer, so it is an admin account. I'm not really familiar with Terminal.
in my office I've a network hard drive mounted volume on /Volumes/guest-share, when I try to open directory I get an error:
"The folder can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents" imac:/ roccoverrastro$ ls -AOel /Volumes/ total 56 -rw-r--r--@ 1 roccoverrastro admin - 6148 26 Giu 00:33 .DS_Store
I have two imac computers networked both running Leopard OS. Mac1 connects to the 2wire ADSL router via Ethernet. Mac2 connects via wireless. Wireless signal is strong. Both computers can connect to the Internet. Both computers can share files with each other. Firewalls set to allow all incoming connection.
Cannot ping from either computer to the other. Error message: Permission Denied. Using the terminal for pinging has the same results. Have not found a solution search the forums. Would like to solve this problem before attempting to add a windows xp laptop to the network.
my MacBook Air wouldn't boot up. After booting from the Install DVD and running disk utility, it said that there was a problem with the internal hard disk drive and that it needed to be reformatted and OS X reinstalled. I am now trying to backup some of my files onto a 1TB external hard disk drive using single user mode.
I bought an used macbook pro early 2011 (i5 2.3) and its not charging. With the battery in it the green light doesnt turn on (doesnt charge at all). If I open the macbook and remove the battery the green light turns on and I can turn on the macbook.I have already bought a new battery and its not charging.Could it be the magsafe board? I am asking because the light goes on without battery so I thought that the magsafe board maybe is working.
I have an early 2011 MBP with 4GB RAM installed and i want to upgrade to 8GB but before i do so i have some questions to make. The MBP has 2 RAM slots so my first question is whether the 4GB is 2x2GB or 1x4GB. Will I see any difference in my MBP performance if i do decide to upgrade?the model of the RAM which is compatible with my model.
The problem is when I put my 4gb flash drive in, the computer doesn't recognize it and doesn't show up on the desktop. So I go into Disk Utility and try to format it to maybe fix it that way, but when I try to, it says format failed, permission denied.
I've been experiencing problems with my 2011 MacBook Pro 15 model with it freezing on me all the time.I have read around and came to a conclusion that it is a logic board problem on the logic board that supports 3 GBs on the superdrive bay.Have any of you had this problem? What did you do to get the problem resolved? I'm going to my local Apple store to try to get this fixed (With the current logic board that supports 6 GBs on the superdrive bay) or get a replacement laptop.
my early 2011 macbook pro graphics *****. Battlefield 3 lags on low. Exporting videos is slow aswell. Is there anyway to make it work better? For a laptop that I paid 2000 dollars for it should work a lot better than it is.
I am looking to either increase ram or better still if I can afford it, put in a faster processor, my laptop is quite slow....and with more than two programs open, it can sometimes grind to a halt..
First off I want to say I've been looking for answers for this on google for a few days, and I've found similar problems but none of the fixes have seemed to help me. Then again I may be doing something wrong. I've recently purchased a 500GB Momentus XT to replace the stock hdd in my early 2011 mbp 13".Originally placed the disk in an external usb 2.0 enclosure and made a clone of my the stock disk. I could boot fine from the momentus xt when being run from the enclosure.
Problems arose as soon as I tried to swap the drives around. Now I could boot fine from the stock drive (in the enclosure) but the momentus XT could not be booted from. I tried swapping the momentus back to the enclosure, and it still worked fine this way. I attempted to reset PRAM and Smc, and it didn't help me.
So I tried to reformat the drive, and to make a partition of 495.11g with the rest being empty space (I read this may help). I then put the momentus into the internal bay, in hope of booting osx from the original disk over usb, and migrating the data I needed over. Disk utility could not recognise there was even a disk in the internal bay (the momentus), just as before.I tried updating to lion (I was on snow leopard before) and turning it on again, but still disk utility couldn't even recognise the presence of the momentus xt when used in the internal bay.
I have noticed that I am having trouble updating the EFI firmware to version 2.7. Every time I try, it runs through the installation, restarts, says install was complete. But when I go to system update, it still lists this as an update, and system profiler still says I'm on the older version. Yes, I have tried updating it using the package from the apple website, it is no different.

I have the Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" with an Intel i5 Processor. Some of my friends told me that only the Intel i7 Processor Macbook Pros have the new Sandy Bridge processor. Are they correct because the base model is the only Macbook Pro in the line to have an i5 Processor.
I currently have a 13 inch MBP early 2011 notebook that has a fan running constantly. The fans are not making horrendous noises indicating that the fan is broken or that a foreign object is bouncing around in my computer, but more so you can just hear the fans operating especially in a quiet room. The sound is very soft but in a dead silent room you can hear it working, you can even make out the sound even while typing. I am pretty sure my computer isn't broken, nor have I downloaded anything I am not supposed to that would allow my fans to make the noise. I bought this computer on the 26th of December and all I am using it for is simply MS word and logic pro 9. I uninstalled logic pro 9 a month ago due to my family buying an iMac and even then I can still hear the fan moving. I am curious as to what you all think, I may just bring it into the Apple store because it's quite frustrating having to write a paper and all you can hear is the sound of the fan working. My fans are running at 2000rpm and my research tells me that that number is normal.
MB Pro: 8,1 early 2011 - (13') 4G ram: the MB Pro errors when I attempt to install two 4G SO-DIMM modules (description below). I have actually attempted "two new" (OWC) Other World Computing sets of (2x4G), after it was believed one of the first modules arrived bad. The result remains; only one 4G modules works, in the lower slot. The upper/top slot does not accept a 4G module. I have tried two sets with all the possible combinations using an existing 2G and a new 4G. With this present setup all I get is 6G of ram. In addition, I used eraser on the ram, no go. I followed desktop procedure, unplugged battery etc., etc..
Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1), Triple boot: WIN7 & BT5
After installing the update for Mac OS (10.7.4) my battery starts too drain too fast. As usual after 100% charge my laptop showing me time near 5 or 6 hours. Of course I understand that this number is relevant, but i always get this numbers when using not so heavy apps (Safari, Mail, Pages, Twitter and iTunes), but now i can see only 2 or 3 hours. After long searches i found the problem. My MacBook Pro 15 inch have problem with graphic-card changing, it always changes to AMD Radeon card when I start Twitter or Reader! I think that Twtitter is not so heavy app that must use diskrete grpahic-card. And because I always run Twitter in background my MacBook Pro's battery drains in a few hours.
diagnose this kernel panic. I recently installed a SSD and 16gb of RAM both from Crucial, and was wondering whether that is potentially the problem. This is on an early 2011 Macbook Pro.
I've recently bought an external hard drive that works on Thunderbolt 2 (LaCie d2 3TB). When I connect the new drive to my Macbook Pro through the thunderbolt port, the drive isn't recognized. However, the drive works fine through a USB connection. I thought that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are compatible, however this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it's because the OS X / driver / firmware version that I'm working on that is not updated? I work on an early 2011 Macbook Pro, OS X Snow Leopard.
