all the applications that were open on shut down resume at start up. Quite a nuisance and unnecessary! How to stop this?

I am trying to create a resume in pages '08, but the header on the resume template is way too big for my purposes. I would like to shrink it so I can fit ~ 2 more lines of text onto the first page.
I have tried
1. exporting it to word
2. clicking everywhere in on the page
3. shrinking the line spacing between subheaders and sections, but it was not enough.
4. swearing
Is it possible to make the spacing of the header smaller, or am I just sol?
I have two annoying issues and hopefully one of you can help. i have looked around and cannot find an answer to my question, especially my second one (which i think is connected to the first one). I am using Safari 5.1.3 and OS X 10.7.3. One of the accounts works perfectly, the other has two issues:
1 - Safari will always start with the same set of old windows, even closing some of them and then reopening safari will always get us to the same old set of windows. I understand the (new) standard behavior is that if i open windows A, B and C and then quit Safari, at reopening it will open the same windows A, B, and C. If i now proceed to close window (or tab) C and then quit Safari at the next opening i shouldbe presented with A and B only. This is not the case for me, i am presented still with A, B, and C. I can add to the windows but not subtract. Clearly something is wrong here. Thoughts?
2 - Trying to debug problem 1 i decided to close all the winodws in Safari, then in System Preferences-General uncheck the "Restore windows when ..." and so i hoped that closing Safari and reopening would get me to just the homepage, but this was not the case and i was presented with the same old set of windows. This is easily explained by the fact that under system prefs-general the box i had unchecked was still checked. It lets me uncheck it but does not retain it.... I obviously tried rebooting to no avail.

How do you totally shut off resume? I've tried unchecking the box at logout, and in system preferences, and it just ignores it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt seems that since 10.7.3, the "Resume" "FEATURE" now does not obey the setting the General Control Panel (I have Resoter windows when quitting and re-openning apps un checked). Â I have an app that is causing the system to hang, but when I send shutdown -h now as root from the terminal and then restart the machine, ALL the applicatinos and their windows reopen, no matter what I do, including the one that is hanging. Â

I am trying to download the Lion .dmg image using the Lion Recovery partition. My connection is flaky, and keeping a connection for the number of hours the downloader indicates is pratically impossible. Everytime If restart the download, the installer throws away what I downloaded previously. How can the downloder be made to resume a previous download? (This is a pre-installed copy of Lion, so the App Store is not an option)

When I resume from sleep the top half of the screen is grey'ed out and it won't go away without going through Shut Down. Just restarting has no effect. Â
FYI Just had a look at the sgcreenshot now that its been uploaded and its considerably brighter than the actual screen. In reality the top menu bar is almost completely occluded and the tone graduates out from about 90% black at the top to around 10% black at the centre of screen. Â

After 10.7.4, the computer indicated I had to reboot. after the reboot, I hear the chimes, then only a gray screen. Nothing else. Tried safe mode by holding down shift key after chimes, but problem persists.

I read the instructions online about rebooting but I didn't do it correctly. What I wanna do it get it back to as if the computer was being turned on for the 1st time. I changed the user name to my name, but when I go to the Air Drop section in Finder, his name still pops in that area. I wanna make it so that everything is under my name. Basically, the login user has my name on it. Air Drop has his name and when you go to USER folder, his name is there too. Want to get it so all of it is under my name.

I have lion installed on a mac mini with 2 usb ethernet adapters. Everytime I reboot the mac mini, it enables Internet Sharing and changes the IP on the 2 USB ethernet interfaces to 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.3.1. How do I stop this from happening. Disabling it in the preferences panel and resetting the IP addresses on each interface get wiped out once the server is rebooted.

My original MBP was encountering end-of-life hardware issues, so earlier this year ago I purchased a new MBP. I used the Migration Assistant utility to move my files and user settings.My older MBP toward the end of its life was having OS shutdown / reboot problems. The OS would never completely shut down. It would go to a light gray screen, and the twirling icon in the middle never went away. A manual shut down from the power button was the only recourse.It seems that the problem is tied to issue(s) with my user account settings, since the problem is still present, despite newer hardware.
After I do a manual shutdown/restart, I can immediately perform an OS reboot just fine. But after the OS has been running for hours/days, I can't run a clean shutdown/restart.I'm 100% confident that this is not a hardware issue. I'm comfortable with reviewing my system.log in Console and issuing Terminal commands, if that will help with any troubleshooting.

I've just done an install of lion from snow leopard on my IMac. Now when I reboot, I just get the grey brushed aluminum background and apple logo slightly higher than centre and a black arrow cursor. No desktop, no login options, nothing else whatsoever appears on the screen. I've tried resetting the pram, and to access the lion recovery mode (command r on boot up) but this does not even appear. All I can get is the same empty screen and arrow cursor.

At first I had forgotten my admin/master password and made numerous attempts.
