Power Mac G5 :: Reset Date And Time Message Appeared On Restart?

Dec 11, 2007

I installed Leopard about 3 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it; however, since then every so often and when booting up my G5, it shuts off again. I boot again and a small window appears asking me to reset the date and time. Each time this happens I am able to reset the time and date correctly in System Preferences. The computer is about 3 years old so it may be the internal battery and nothing to do with Leopard. Or, could it be a bug in Leopard?

MacBook Pro :: Wallpaper Keeps Resetting After Reboot?

Jun 30, 2012

I'm having a problem where my Macbook Pro keeps resetting back to the default 'space' wallpaper everytime it boots up. When I go into the settings and click on 'Desktop & Screensaver', it changes back to the wallpaper I originally set before shutting the Macbook down, without me clicking anything else.

I've read in several places that a file needs to be deleted, something like (top of my head) 'com.apple.desktop.---' in the library folder. However, that file doesn't exist or at least I can't locate it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Preferences Reset Upon Restart

Apr 21, 2012

I am on my MacBook pro from 2010, reinstalling Snow Leopard and Lion afterwards. I install the updates and some programs (Plex, uTorrent, Chrome) only to realize that when I restart, some preferences completely ignored.. All programs added to the Dock are gone again, the assigned log-in items don't start up, iCloud was logged out again, mail settings were reset.I reinstalled the whole thing, except for Lion, and it all worked fine. So anyway, I thought it was the laptop. Some sort of hardware problem or something, right? So I just got this new Mac mini, with Lion, and it does the same exact thing. It doesn't remember some changes I made. I tried to repair permissions, but it doesn't do anything.

MacBook Pro :: After A Hard Reset Only Shows The Wallpaper After The Login Screen?

May 9, 2012

I recently had to turn off my MacBook Pro after it hung for a long period of time. When I turned it back on again everything started as normal and I was able to enter my password at the login screen. However, once I do so I'm just presented with the wallpaper and my (working) mouse pointer. So far, I've tried the following without success:

1. Boot in Safe Mode

2. Ran fsck from Terminal

3. Tried PRAM reset

I've seen it suggested elsewhere that I should insert the install DVD but that's not in my possession unfortunately.

Mac Pro :: Need To Restart Computer Message On Reboot

May 17, 2009

I have a 2008 MacPro Octo 2.8GHz. Whilst I was in Vista64 (a separate drive, not visualization) I was playing a halflife game called day of defeat. The game froze twice, requiring a crtl-alt-del to release it and stop the application that was not working. When I then rebooted into OSX, the "You need to restart your computer" screen appeared in 4 languages, which I believe is the Kernel panic screen. I've done the hardware test that reports no problems (D key). I've tried re-installing the operating system, (C key), no go just panics. I've tried a safe boot (shift) lots of disk activity followed by a panic. I've even reset the PRAM, no effect.

The queer thing is it will boot into Vista64, but there is some screen corruption whilsts its booting, but once in, it works OK with the exception of playing any 3D games, they will not launch (re-installed drivers). Vista reports that there is no 3D hardware acceleration. Does OSX require 3D just to get past the login screen? I've removed some ram and removed all the other hard drives. I'm beginning to think the 8800GT is playing up, otherwise why would vista still work?, but not 3D games? Is there any software I can use in Vista to check the 8800GT? I also noticed that it seemed to be taking longer and longer to shut down.

OS X :: Bandwidth Monitoring Widget That Doesn't Reset Itself On Reboot

Oct 5, 2006

I'm just wondering if there is a bandwidth monitor widget that doesn't reset itself on a reboot. I feel like I've tried hundreds from the Apple widget download page, but all reset themselves. It's not vital that I know how much bandwidth I use as I've got unlimited broadband, but it would be interesting to see how much I get through in a week/month/year. Is there a monitor that will allow you to view the bandwidth on an IP address you specify? I want to be able to monitor all traffic coming in and out of my router, but I can't find an App that does this either. All they monitor is my local IP address 192.XXX.XXX.XXX (Specific to my iMac). I have a static IP address with my broadband so can I monitor traffic flowing through that? Or would I just need to monitor the routers network and/or broadcast address?

OS X :: External Drive Location Changed After Restart / Reboot

Jun 3, 2010

I have an annoying problem when I start up my external hdd in OS X. Let's say the location for the disk is: /Volumes/disk A. Sometimes (often) after a reboot or just a restart of the external hdd in OSX the location becomes: /Volumes/disk A 1. The system adds a 1 to the location of the disk!?!? Torrents cannot found the location of existing downloads and it's the same with my usenet client. The only way I've managed to solve the problem is to try to restart osx + external hdd until the location becomes /Volumes/disk A again (or recheck ALL torrents to the new location). I haven't found any logic when it goes back to the original place yet so often it takes a while to get it right.

OS X Mavericks :: Applications Window View Options Reset On Reboot

Sep 11, 2014

I edit the view options for the Applications window. I make the icons bigger, and I put a photo in the background.  The window looks fine until I do a reboot (I don't know about logging out - I only have one user).  Then when I open the Applications window I find it has reset to smaller icons on a white background.  Doesn't matter what I do when I edit the options.  It always looks the same after I restart.  I can't say for certain, but I think this problem has been going on since before Mavericks.  I thought the cause might be a 3rd party app but I just bought a brand new iMac and the same thing happens.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Corrupted Startup Volume - How To Reset Permissions

Jul 1, 2012

Running 10.7.4, MacBookPro Mid 2010.

After hardware failure (read heads on HD gave out.  AppleCare replacement of HD. Third party data recovery and reinstall on my new HD.)  I connected new Ext HD for Time Machine, and Time Machine has corrupted my startup volume.

Took to the repair shop and they said the Time Machine preferences file was corrupted, which left all my system drive data in a read-only state after backup.  They trashed the pref file, and reset the permissions/read-only flags on my startup volume.

1) How do I reset the file permissions myself? (so I can nuke my Time Machine backup, manually back everything up, and manually recreate my entire system drive?)

2)  Do you think since the data recovery place (Apple Authorized BTW) rewrote all my original data to the new HD, some "random" corruptions were copied over?  Or is this a problem with Time Machine?  (Which is why I want to do a manual reinstall/restore.)

OS X :: Possible To Reset Bluetooth Connection Without Restart?

Apr 19, 2007

I use Skype a lot, with a Sony Ericson HBH-602 bluetooth headset on my powerbook G4 1.25GHz with built in bluetooth and airport. I also use an isight. Anyways, sometimes the Skype connection dies and the call terminates. About 60% of the time, the bluetooth icon in OSX doesn't 'free up' and it still thinks there's a connection to the bluetooth headset. The BT icon still has the dotted line through it as if there's a connection even after the call has terminated. This might be a Skype bug, but it means I can't use the bluetooth headset again and continue the call again until I restart OS X. Is there any way of doing this without restarting the computer? Sometimes i can talk for 3 hours with no problems, sometimes the call drops after 5 mins, and messes up the bluetooth connection.

Intel Mac :: Settings Always Reset After Restart?

May 26, 2012

Basically I bought an iMac last October, 21", 4GB standard manufactured settings ram etc. After a few weeks every time I quit an application and go back on it, it returns to its old settings. Whenever I remove a bookmark from the toolbar on Safari and restart it, it returns to the old settings, when ever I restart the computer the dock and background changes towards its original settings. This is starting to get really annoying, and I don't know what to do and I have installed all available updates.

Intel Mac :: All Of Settings Reset After Restart

Jun 17, 2012

I've been having this problem for a little over a month now, I've spent countless hours researching, and every possible solution that I've come across hasn't worked for me. I've reset my PRAM, I've repaired my disk and permissions multiple times, even by using the Disk Utility on my Recovery Partition.

Basically, about two months ago I (regretfully) changed my account shortname by going to System Preferences>Users & Groups, right clicking on my account and changing the shortname in the advanced options.  Everything was fine, but now when I restart my iMac, my desktop wallpaper changes back to what it was on the day I changed my shortname, any apps that I add to my dock are removed after i restart, Safari opens up the guide that I was using to show me how to change the shortname, the "Users & groups" window even appears as soon as I log in to my account. Basically, my iMac seems to be booting back to the day I changed the shortname, now any changes I make aren't saved.

Everything keeps restting back to the way it was on the day that I changed my shortname.  Since then, I've changed the shortname BACK to what it was the first time, hoping that would fix the issue.

Also, I'm not sure if this is normal, but if I go to "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist", and check the permissions, "everyone" is on there twice:

It also does this for every other .plist file in my preferences folder.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Backup Slow Even After Restart In Safe Mode

Jul 1, 2014

Ok... So, I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. Many people do. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode. I even followed some of the other tips that are on this string: slow time machine backup

Nothing has worked. I don't use Norton Symantec but I didn't the Norton Remove script through the Console already. I don't run any anti-virus software.

This started when I was backing up to at Time Capsule. I backed up to the TC for years before this started. I then moved to backing up (started fresh) to a external HD connected via USB.

OS X :: Getting Crash Report Every Time Reboot

Jul 13, 2009

I've looked every where for info and can't seem to find any one with the same problem. Every time I reboot, I get the unexpected restart dialog and the option to send the report to apple. When I look at the report it says its a kernel panic, but really the machine is very stable during normal operation, and the restart process works fine with the only abnormality being that the error dialog pops up every time without fail. After I either send the report or ignore it the computer runs normally. I did the standard permission repair and it didn't help. Also ran a ram testing app a while ago, Remember or something like that, after I installed some 3rd party ram from OWC and it said my ram was fine, so I don't think its the ram, but if some one know of a better test I'll try it. If any one has any idea what the problem might be, or even how to just simply disable the warning dialog would be grateful. Also, just looked in my panic reporter logs and it has not recorded any of my resets as panics.
