Since updating to 10.7.3 from 10.6.8 my computer freezes a couple of times a day. I have to hold the power button down and re-boot.

MacPro 12 Core is going into sleep mode (so it seems) and becomes unresponsive requiring a hard reboot by holding the power button. Did this on a new user account I created, then it did it in Recovery Mode while using Disk Utility to repair the drives. I was about to try reinstalling OS X but it seems that this maybe a hardware problem if it happened in Recovery mode. Is my thinking right, or could it still be software? Trying to run Hardware test (D on startup) but can't get it to work so far.
View 11 Replies View RelatedSince updating to Lion, and subsequently to QuickTime 10.1, many movies that worked fine before won't open now. I get an error that says, "A required codec is not available." Two things make this even more frustrating:
1. Some movies of the same type still open just fine. I can't seem to find a pattern that links the ones that won't open.
2. The movies that won't open are still available to preview in Finder. If they will play in Finder, why not in QuickTime? Isn't it just a QickTime "plug-in" that plays them in the Finder?

Safari keeps freezing up after the 5.1.4 update. I have no extensions. I also tried using firefox and it too freezes so it might not just be a safari problem.

I have googled for the past couple of hours but can't find exactly what I am after. I have a macbook and I have leopard os x 10.5.2. I don't remember the last time I did a os x update (or if I ever have). But I was getting updates to download the newer version of itunes and safari (I was having trouble accessing some sites, and itunes won't let me visit the store because of safari or something.) So I've run the system update and it says it is going to install 10.5.8, and the new version of itunes. It downloads fine and then asks me to restart. I click restart and the computer goes to the reboot type screen and a box pops up saying "Software update" and underneath it says 'Configuring Installation'. The little blue bar loads a smidge and then it sits in the one spot and doesn't move at all. I have tried this in the past and I had left the laptop for hours and came back and it hadn't moved at all. So I force quit to get back into my computer. Now I have no idea what to do? Do I download 10.5.8 directly from the apple website? Or do I have to download 10.5.3, then 10.5.4 etc.

It seems similar to the 1.7 firmware problem many are reporting, but from what I can tell from their posts the freezing only lasts 15-30 seconds then they can work again. On my computer the freezing does not stop and I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown every time. When I attempt to reboot the computer after that I have to reset the PRAM every time.
I am using a 3rd party hard drive that worked fine up until a little less than a week ago, and also worked fine in my old plastic white macbook. When I put the stock hard drive back in it seems to work fine, but I admittedly haven't used it as extensively and not all of my apps are installed, but most of my freezing occurs in safari as well sometimes itunes.If anyone knows how to downgrade firmware back to 1.6 I would try that as well, but I am not sure if that is possible.
I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USBÂ enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

I can't figure out why my MPB frezzes up all the time. It's currently running worse then my Win XP. I counldn't even finish this thread before it frooze up again. I tried to run a disk check, that also made it frezze. The only way i can get it to life again is a hard reset.

I got a 1 TB Western Digital external last night and had left it on all night so that Time Machine could back me up a few times. Then this morning, I had disconnected the drive and decided that I ought to update to 10.5.8 because Software update had told me to the day before. So I did, and I walked out of the room after it started installing the update. Then I walked back in when I first heard the startup chime and the fans were running at 6000 rpm and the screen showed the Apple and the daisy wheel. It proceeded to turn itself off, and repeat the process, always getting stuck at the Apple logo screen. So I tried booting it up in safe mode, but nothing changed; it never got past the apple screen. Then I booted from the install disc and used disk utility to verify the disk and repair the disk permissions. I tried starting it up a couple of times after that and nothing had changed. So I booted from the install disc again and was going to reinstall Leopard, but I decided to restore from one of the pre-10.5.8 Time Machine Backups.

I installed the recommended 2.7 EFI update (which was advised by the system update utility) and after the reboot, I could not access any network resources (couldn't ping the router). The information provided showed that I was connected to the WIFI AP and had a good IP Address (provided via DHCP). I connected an ethernet cable and got a new IP address in both cases, I was unable to ping the gateway IP address.
I tried clearing the PRAM and NVRAM but no success. I booted into the restore console and the wifi access there showed my Time Machine backup (connected to my Airport Extreme). I was confused by this as when fully booted, it wouldn't show anything on the network, but in the restore mode it could. I have begun the process of restoring from the previous backup which will take a few hours.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have updated to OSX.7.4 but but now my external hard drive icons have disappeared from my desktop? The disks are recognized in disk utility and the "show external disks" is ticked in Finder Prefs. Disk Utility did show some errors in 2 or 3 of the disks which have been corrected. It is just since updating to the latest version of Lion this has happened. They are linked via eSATA cables and are in two Sonnet containers (4 hard drives in each). CF cards show up OK. My back up Chronosync, fails to run as it does not recognise the disks.

My Mac Pro ("Cyrus") has two 1 TB hard disks. When I reboot, only the first of those disks (also named "Cyrus"), the one with the system and home directories, mounts on the desktop. The second disk ("Virtual", need a better name, any ideas?) does not appear in /Volumes and doesn't work until I mount it manually in Disk Utility. This behaviour is seen consistently, i.e. after every reboot. How can I convince Cyrus to mount both disks?

I bought Leopard but have been waiting until the 10.5.1 update is out to install it so am ready to install today. I have a MBP though and heard about the MBP keyboard freezing issue. Did the 10.5.1 update fix this problem?
View 11 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to install the latest version of leopard when the computer restarts it's self and it starts to "Configure installation", it freezes. I really don't think it should take OVER 12 hours to STILL be "Configuring". I called Apple, and the representative told me that I might need to install safari, but, it won't let me. Heh, I don't know what the problem is. I have an iMac G5 with 57.21 GB on my it. Does anyone know of any solution for this issue?
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday, iTunes installed an update to 10.6.3, and since then freezes less than a minute after launch. The beachball just spins and iTunes is completely unresponsive. It is usually downloading a new podcast at the time, but that is simply because that's the first thing iTunes does if I'm not syncing. Â
I tried restarting. I tried restarting in Safe Mode. I tried restarting without anything connected to any ports. I tried uninstalling iTunes, restarting, installing a new download from apple website, and restarting again. Â
I'm not sure what to do next..Everything was working fine up the the moment the upgrade finished. Â

So, my 5 year old iMac's become outdated bec. I have Tiger and OSX 10.4.11.Mac's moving my email to "the cloud" and I cannot upgrade to Lion, which is required. Is buying a new computer my only option? Or, can this machine be manually upgraded with new parts?

We have a Mac Mini connected to our HDTV, pretty much for media server duty only. No mouse or keyboard conveniently located as a rule for this rig. We use the excellent Rowmote app (mouse, keyboard and romote control) on our iPhones to control it and it works great most of the time. However, sometimes you need a real keyboard. Since we usually have laptops handy, Screen Sharing seems like an obvious workaround. However, it ALWAYS (and when I say ALWAYS, I mean going back to 2005) asks for the name and password regardless of and inspite of checking and rechecking "Remember this password in my Keychain" about a thousand times since Screen sharing was first offered on the Mac OS, right up to 10.7.3.Â
This pervasive bad behavior can also be duplicated verbatim on our kid's media Mac Mini also.This is not a big thing, but it doesn't work, and hasn't worked for a very long time (in computer years). Does anyone know how to simply click on the Mac Minis, click the "Share Screen" button and well, share screens without constantly being asked to type in a name and password every single time?

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I was rung Tiger with, then I installed Leopard 10.5. I use this as a second computer. All is fine except that my Epson scanner does not work with 10.5. I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted.After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again.It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â
